It was not that big. There were multiple transfers in the EPL for more than that including defenders and midfielders. It barely made it into top 10 EPL transfers that season.

If 3.5 M is small for 31 years old player in 1997,.....41M is also small for 23 years old player in 2020

I mixed up with his return to Spurs, but even so, £3.5m was nowhere near big money in 1997.

Don't haughtily ask me if I know cos I'm from that period. For comparison, Chelsea spent £5m on a 29 year old left-back Graeme Le Saux in 1997 and £2.5m on an unknown teenage Nigerian leftback called Babayaro in the same 1997.

So zip your mouth on telling me what you know nothing about. £3.5m was a regular fee in 1997.

40M is a regular fee in 2020.

Flops in this era cost more than this....

e.g. Kepa, Jorginho, Bakayoko, Drinkwater etc

The same way Pep didn't sign Mahrez when Liecester asked for 80-90M....
The same way he didn't sign Maguire and Fred...

I can name 10-15 players Ferguson signed within 1993- 2003 for about 1M - 15M and he ditched them after less than 10 games for a fee below what he paid for them just because they didn't perform enough in those few games.

Yet Pep can sign Mahrez for £60m and Cancelo for £67m just to bench them.

You lack historical context on the £3.5m. For example, a common Middlesbrough bought a 29 year old drug addict Paul Merson for £4.5m in the same 1997 who has never been Sheringhams mate in the England team. Even going back a few years, Everton bought an unknown Nigerian called Amokachi from Belgian league for £3.5m 3 years earlier in 1994.

I called it regular transfer fee but it's super regular.

whatever Pep is spending, Man city makes income which is greater than their expenditure. Unless you guys thinks that Man city runs a loss on account of Pep's success on the pitch. A club can't be that foolish; it is a business enterprise, not a charity organization.
actually, Man City runs on loss! Chelsea were also running on losses for a while after Abramovich takeover that he wrote off the club's debts for £100M or more at a point. Also it's pretty obvious the city owners have been overinflating income via sponsoring themselves by sister companies and under-the-table monies, underreporting player's wages, paying their coach through third parties to make his wages look way lower than it really is amongst other shady tactics.
Yes, it should be a business but it's not to the owners as the business is like a drop in the ocean compared to their wealth. Man city is simply a front for them to go mainstream and whitewash the source of their wealth and the lack of civil rights in their country which they are responsible for

What year was Roy Keane transferred? The more you type on stuff you know nothing about the more clueless you look.

I just told you average 29 year olds left backs and midfielders were going for £5m in 1997 and you are talking cluelessly about Roy Keane transfer fee from 4 years prior.

EPL tansfer record in 1996 was £15m for Shearer, just 3 years after Roy Keane so you can see how transfer fees have progressed from 1993 to 1997 and how clueless you look. Numerous people like Cole, Bergkamp and Collymore have more than doubled Roy Keane's transfer fee in the next 3 years and 30 year olds like Zola are going for £4.5m already by 1996, and you are still referencing a redundant Roy Keane fee from 4 years prior.

It happens but it's rare. Pepe paid part of his transfer fee from his own pocket when he wanted to move from Porto to Madrid. Coutinho reportedly did the same when he wanted to leave Liverpool to Barca. Kaka was offered much more money by Man City but he refused their offer and chose Real Madrid's less comparable wages instead
These are exceptions, not the norm.

99% of players that move to Spain get a fat increase in salary.
A big club is big because it has money to spend, which attracts big players which leads to trophies.

Neymar left all the glory in Barcelona, when PSG offered him crazy money along with champions league football.

Money gives success. It is true at Manchester City, it is true at Barcelona.

Stop lying to make yourself look smart....From Sherringham bn a free transfer to 3.5M a regular fee in the 90s.

Below average Kepa is going for more than 70M....
Average Maguire is going for 80M,.....
Average Stones was sold for 50M....
I can name more than 50 overpriced players...

So Ferguson won't sign Rooney if the price was 50M then?
Ferguson wont sign Cantona if the price was 60M then?
Ferguson wont sign Ferdinand if the price was 50M then?

Ferguson paid the players transfer fees the same way Pep is paying.

Oga talk for yourself, i don't want Fraudiola, there are better coaches. Even Lampard may even reign supreme over him soon, the way he is learning fast on the job.

Yarning more opaks. Which of these players were signed by Fergie? Bringing everybody else signing to equate a shrewd Fergie to a wasteful Pep will not work.

Unlike you, we know what Fergie signed these players for and what equivalent players in Serie A were going for.

Unlike you, we have witnessed and evidenced how Fergie chilled out and didn't try to keep up with Chelsea spending when Roman came and was blowing millions. Instead he sat back, restrategised, spent light money on the likes of VDS, Evra, Vidic and Ronaldo and took Manure back to the top. Your Fraudiola would have been throwing tantrums and threatening to quit if he was at Manure then and Chelsea was outspending him lavishly.

This is not if if if nonsense you keep quoting up there. That is what Fergie actually did and evidenced before our very eyes. I tell it how it is, and you tell it how it might be - Puff Daddy.

If Fergie spends big, it's just one or two players every few years and supplement them with the Darren Fletchers and Park Ji Sungs, unlike Fraudiola that will pack all 22 players at high prices. Your attempt to equate the shrewd Fergie to the wasteful Fraudiola will not work.

-Paying 3.5M for a 31 years old player that will play as 3rd choice in 1997 is high.

-Ferguson and Pep are point and kill expert.....whatever they want, the club will do.

Go and tell that to Watford, Crystal Palace or Bournemouth. grin

Fraudiola never lost 6 league games in a season before he got to epl. He tasted it in his first season, before he requested for bullion van.

This season, he lost 9 matches and eruditor, his strongest supporter here, disappeared from the radar.

Your summary makes no sense.

Teams play 4-4-2 then so Sheringham will get plenty game time, and his price is not high. Chelsea bought two left backs same year one for £5m and one for £2.5m.

Fergie is nothing like Pep who will have all 22 players at high prices. Just in right-back alone, he has a £50m right-back and a £67m substitute for example. In contrast, Gary Neville was washed since 2006. Fergie used Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Da Silva twins and even blended Valencia into that position from 2006 to 2013 still delivering trophies. You can see the difference between point-and-kill and shrewd management in that right-back position alone. Where Fergie found constant solution to that position, Pep will be bringing in Walker, Danilo and Cancelo for a combined £142m in just 3 years just to point-and-kill that position and changing expensive players like underwear.

Point out any Fergie team and 15 players are either academy players or cheap signings. If he was point and kill, he would have held Manure to ransom to match Chelsea's spending when Roman came in. Big difference.
