start with books that have a few pages , and make sure you finish them , then read books on topics that interest you and also MAKE SURE YOU FINISH Them , while reading make sure you are comfortable but not too comfortable so as not to fall asleep , also read with a purpose , programmers read tech books to learn / understand more concepts , so ask yourself why you want to read this book, also read news , that's why I come to nairaland everyday , I have been on nairaland since my js3 days , reading news keeps you updated , you'll want to know current happenings , you see stuffs you don't know , and will want to explore them , and the best way to explore something is to read about it ....just read because the best way to be a reader is to read , so pick up a book and start reading...

Thanks Chief!

I have gone through all the comments and I can say that nairaland Guys are just hyprocrites. If it’s to bash women or call them derogatory names, they head the circus. So you guys are not as smart as you paint yourselves.

I actually took a book to jot down books but you guys are not even saying anything important. We know the Bible is great but we also know that’s not what the op meant. All of you are just all talks. Don’t let me see any of you bashing women again. Olodo men grin
Lol. A lot of people are actually mentioned the Bible perhaps out of respect, which is the most hypocritical way of treating the Bible.
They hardly read it, they don’t study it, they only believe in their pastors and teachings.

To the Op, mine is No excuses -the power of self discipline by Brian Tracy. I literally took out a pen and note to jot down but was really disappointed. [/quote] why?

The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill
The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle

No disrespect to the religious people that can't mention a single book that radically changed their lives apart from the Bible.

I studied the Bible from Genesis to Revelation twice in the past 20 years. I pity those set of people.

Napoleon Hill-16 laws of success! Though bulky but if anyone would live by those principles discuss therein. You will never remain the same again!

My favourite book.

Can't stop reading it.

It is funny (John 9)
It is sexual in an holy way (Songs of Solomon)
Filled with exhilarating promises (Isaiah 40 - 49)
Teaches Morals (Proverbs and Ecclesiastes)
Clear your doubt about God (The whole Book)
Teaches astronomy (Book of Job)
Teaches Futurology (Revelations)
Etcetera.

Absurdism. Have you read Ethics by Baruch Spinoza?

Wow, Ethics! Yes I've read it in the past. Maybe 2014 or so when I was still trying to get my thoughts together on philosophy. But I could not wrap my head over it because I was still naive back then. Only read it to satisfy my urge, but i think I'll be revisiting it these days.

Let me start first.
Mine is named The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do In Life And Business. It's a book by an American reporter, Charles Duhigg. Prior to reading that book, I used to have some bad habits that keep re-occuring, sometimes unconsciously. The book helped me identified and change some of my "keystone habits" which were the fountain from which other habits emerged.
So folks, what is that great book that shaped your life or that made you realise something important?

"Flowers in the Attic" by V C Andrews

One of those voluminous books that looked forbidden to a 13 year old me.

I was shocked that I could understand this "Adult" book.

Took me 7 months to complete and my life was forever changed.

Had to hunt for the sequels:
Petals in the Wind, and
Seeds of Yesterday.

My love for bestsellers and fiction was ignited.

So bad that I would read novels while preparing for exams.

A great book, read it while I was really young....it was really captivating and real...would love to read it again

I was glued by the 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and a fervent follower of the philosopher "Niccolò Machiavelli". But upon becoming a Born Again Christian "The Holy Bible" has become my inspiration.
