But how long are we gonna keep hiding from the unknown? We just have to find a way to make life more secured for everyone. Sometimes, no matter how much you hide or disguise, your life and that of your family will always be in danger, as long you are doing well in life and the majority of your neighbours are in abject poverty.

Danger lurks in unimaginable places. This brings to mind the MD of Maesrk Nigeria that got attacked in Ikoyi.

I will rather live in a Nigeria where nothing is free but you get your money's worth in services. That is why obodo oyigbo is d way it is.

You provide the services before you tax the citizens, that's how it's done not the other way round.

Now tell me, what has the Govt provided to warrant these taxes?

You want to tax me for the land I bought, sand filled, dug bore hole, bought a pole and wired my house, graded d road, provided a security at the gate?

It costs money to provide services, and that money has to come from somewhere.

It's crazy.

When Fashola re-constructed the Ikorodu road from Mile 12 to d d junction to Laspotech with the World Bank loan there were rumours that it would be tolled just as the Lekki-Ajah express way and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.

The Govt quickly dispelled it. You can't brandish taxes as a gift to the citizens you came to rescue.

The question is the little you have received, what have you done with it?

You want to kill the already beaten down citizens innit?

I agree that rural areas should also have access to electricity and that there are social grounds for doing so. My point is that it should be paid for and not subsidised. We should learn to bring our consumption in line with our pockets.

The spurious argument for subsidising petrol for instance (to make transport cheap so that the poor can afford it) is rubbish. People in countries where there is no subsidy such as in Ghana or Kenya for instance, pay for transport at prevailing rates and poverty rates there are no worse than in Nigeria where we have been subsidising electricity and petrol for decades while denying funds to healthcare and education.
u are mistaking the subsidies on petrol should not be there in the first place if crude is refine in Nigeria ....the 440 thousand barrels is for local consumptions not export .....there was not need to subsides

The government does not need subsidies to encourage development in the power sector. What is needed are good policies and regulations. Already, Nigeria has huge need for power and it's ready to pay for it.

Look at the telecom sector, no subsidy, no government interventions, just regulations and guidelines and yet the sector is booming, posting huge profits year after year. Inside same Naija o.

The solution to Nigerias problems is definitely not technical related, while we take communication for granted today and keep calling for MTN and SouthAfricas Head, We have forgotten the hugh problems these Guys solved to get to this point...................... Now we worry everyday of the money they milk us daily...................

The government is mad at MTN cos of the amount of cash it exports and keep looking for ways to bite out of it

meanwhile If it solves Nigeria Power issues...... MTN Nigerias revenue is childs Play

Our Leaders are just not ready ............They keep fighting themselves on who will own the next big Industry, and they cannot allow Foreigners as it definitely reduces their power over us like the case of MTN.......

We will just live with it till our leaders are ready

Do they give free healthcare in Benin, Chad, Cameroon and Niger?

All of these things you say are good and well, assuming the government is responsible but te mismanagement and looting we get from crude oil revenue would apply with taxes.
ultron12345:

The bikeman earning 30K per month is better off paying 15% tax (N4,500) and 6% health insurance premium (N1,800) that will assure him of quality healthcare, education, infrastructure etc, than to keep the entire 30k and buy everything for himself.

His 6% health premium will assure him of free, quality healthcare. If he has accident on his bike, can the 30k treat him? If he develops kidney problem, can 30k treat him? Unexpected expenses on drugs and treatment for him, his wife and his children will be gone.

His 15% tax will assure his 2 or 3 children of free, quality education with which they can use to compete for better future. He doesn't need to worry about school fees. Without that 15%, he'll probably be paying more for the children in a substandard school which will not equip them with the skills they need to escape the poverty they've found themselves in.

When there are good roads from his taxes, he will spend less on bike repairs, his bike will last longer and produce a higher return on investment.

When everyone in society is freed from the burden of expensive medical bills and school fees, coupled with better infrastructure that will make cost of goods and services cheaper, everyone will have more money to spend on other things, like transport. So the bikeman will even have more customers and make more income.

We are not the only country in the world with poor people. Our socioeconomic demographics are not worse than countries like Benin, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, yet they still collect taxes.

That is d inefficiency I was talking about, bypassing your meter is a very small issue that can easily be resolved by the authorities.

The problem is that they lack such incentives to deal with people like u and their rogue officials because they collect subsidies and estimated bill from other users.

Once prepaid meters are in place for everyone as it should be and the DISCOs revenue depends solely on d prepaid users, I promise you that they will be strict and sit up. It is business afterall.

By the way it is very easy to spot illegal connections, placing a general meter on every transformer and compare values with subtotal from all the houses fed from it. Also, using steep punishment like jail time for defaulters.

For transportation in cities like Lagos. I think government should give licenses for big businesses to ply certain routes.

Transport companies to be given such licenses should have a minimum of 400 buses in their fleet, pay an annual license fees of about 100k per bus ie minimum of N40 million per company.

Agbero should be banned and all revenues should come to the government.

How many houses will you destroy from Ikorodu to TBS..

Instead of having fragmented ownership, do you think any Agbero can disturb a Transport company with over 400 buses, 100 mechanics, 500 drivers, 100 admin staff under their payroll and also licensed by the government for a given route.

Ambode lost out partly for his plans for the transport system in Lagos, which the Agberos do not want

Union is for exploitation in this part of the country. The big Agberos in Lagos go home everyday with between 700k to N1.2 million every day... They finance election of local government chairmen, states house of assembly, house of representative, Senate. They contribute towards election of state governors.

No wonder they are above the law. A medical doctor with about 30 years experience in the United States, had to receive the blessings of a popular Agbero before he could become a member of the house of representative.

Won't be surprised if the Agbero will contest to become a Senator or a governor.

My dear right now is that Nigeria has missed it.

The opportunity to grow and blossom might have passed us. Oil is gradually fading away, population is getting higher.

We built only Lagos and perhaps Abuja that can work without the oil money.

Future looks bleak.

This is the way to go.. I currently work with an IPP that manages electricity to several estates within the lekki axis and they pay premium price for uninterrupted power supply. The tariff ranges from btw N55/kwh to N60/kwh. Electricity is not cheap.
ahiboilandgas:
I think electricity should be decentralized so that rich areas /state can generate and distribute their power .....the National project is not working.....ibom power plant can serve akwa ibom well ....rich neighbourhoods like ikoyi ,lekki, asokoro ,portharcout gra ,nassarawa gra ,Kaduna gra can be paying premium for electricity since any way they burn more on deseal generator while poor area should be of fgn grids

Being rich in Nigeria is really exhausting. You cannot go everywhere and anywhere without due protocol and tight security . I was in a church service at Houston, Texas, last Dec 31st night. in attendance was the Oyo state governor and his wife, without any entourage in the middle of the night. I bet he can't do that anywhere in Nigeria. It very important to focus on the quality of of life also when choosing a residential location.

I have some family in New York and i always tell them that place is not good for me. A place where a multi millionaire will be living in a one bed room condo, meanwhile somewhere in Atlanta or houston a bartender is living in a 4 bedroom 3000sqf house.
