from the little i've read up on the matter. it seems Shoprite has been taking a pasting over the past few months especially in Nigeria but they say they would want to sell to Nigerian investors outrightly or at least fore go a majority shareholding. Nigeria's business environment has been pretty tough this past few years for reasons we don't need to rehash (price of crude oil related) so that has pretty much hit them hard. the retail business itself has been tough over the past year. Mr Price pulled out of Nigeria, Australia and Poland recently. Woolworths too left Ghana so it hasn't been so rosy lately.

other than the tough Nigerian business environment i not sure the owners of shoprite fully appreciated the threat the Nigerian informal retail sector poses to formal ones. alot of of nigerians would rather shop in local markets and mom and pop local stores than at these formal retail outlets. Take for instance a single corn corb costs about N500 at Shoprite something I can buy in open markets for probably N50-N100.

The opportunities in the Nigerian market are there but you have to do your home work. That said the government can do better in improving our ease of doing business. power i feel is the big impediment if solved would really boost our business environment
