Should I Continue? by Logoking(m): 8:01pm On Aug 05, 2020
Recently i have been experiencing some measure of doubts, and i say this in regards to web development maybe also known as software development, lately i saw someone offering to create a website and mobile app for just 7000naira,i believe people like these make use of things like wordpress and so on.

But since it can be easily done with plugins like these and at a relatively and ridiculous price, what is then the essence of learning web development,i am really discouraged right now,and just to add to these a few of my relatives including my mom(although she has now accepted my decision to learn web dev)wants me to learn how to trade drugs.

So i beg you nairalanders please advise me on what to do,please note i am 20 years old,so should i just go ahead in learning it ,or just divert my time into learning how to trade drugs?

No knowledge is lost and besides, you are not learning to compare yourself with others but to be your own best.

All I will say to you, young man, is in the next 5 years you will regret for backing out of learning software development.

For many at their 40s to crave to have the knowledge of software development you at 20 you are already giving up.

Although, I should not ask this but let me ask you anyway. Have you seen what an average software developer (android) earn in Nigeria and outside?
That alone should motivate you to go ahead with it.

WordPress developers are not software developers.

So, I will encourage you to go ahead with the learning, be patient and be consistent.

That's why you don't need to rush when it comes to learning software development. Learn the best practices in software development. Be consistent and keep practicing I believe if we are all super good in it we'll get there. Nigerians programmers are getting job abroad very well, we are getting there. You can get hired by FAANG if you are able to crack some algorithm tasks given to you during your whiteboard interview.

If your current Reason doesn't end up Discouraging You, something else definitely will.

Abeg make Una leave Software development for those who are made for it.

If you are passionate or serious with Valid reason to go into this field, trust me, even something 7-times stronger than your current Reason wouldn't be enough to give you a doubt.

And those who post such Super Duper Cheap Prices fall into 3 Categories
1. Scammers / Fraudsters - Some are straight up Fraudsters from the beginning, while others would try attending to You till they get overwhelmed with your request (mostly due to inexperience or unable to meetup with what was promised), then they DisAppear.

2. Newbies yet to know worth of their trade hence they end up UnderPricing their work. More like selling MTN ₦100 recharge card for ₦60 because you didn't know it's actual Market Value is ₦100 . I personally made this sort of mistake also.

3. Those who either are selling (nulled / pirated) Scripts or finish script requiring small modifications hence are targeting more TurnOver to make a make up a decent Total Sale. More like rather than sell something ₦100 to just 7 people, They sell it ₦65 to 100-people.

but you know what, when you're good, People would pass others NearBy and come to you.

Like I said, if I love singing, wouldn't try quiting just because there already are lots of Musicians.

Life is just too short wasting your time on something just because You feel....

What do you mean by learning how to trade drugs Are you a pharmacist? I pray you get arrested while selling those drugs. Nonsense!!
If you like don't learn the web dev that you want to learn. Be there trying to sell drugs. Because those that spent 6 years in pharmacy school are foolish.

Learning is 1-thing. Being Good at either or Both is another.

Software development just like all other areas of IT aren't something You learn Finish; rather You get Better with consistency over a long period of time AND even then, you have to keep learning and adjusting to new Trends in other to remain Relevant in the Industry.

Don't forget, IT is a Fast Paced environment where except you adapt, would get washed aside no matter how Good you used to be.

No Doctor Got Good without making Mistakes which must have cost lots of Lives hence why you can't compare a Doctor with many years experience with One who just graduated.

I used to have this doubt until I started following programmers on Twitter.

Forget the ridiculous prices you see on fiverr and all. There are gainfully employed developers making serious money.

I know of a particular teenager here on NL who works remotely and earn $2,500 monthly.

I was reading of another fellow on Twitter that got a job of $3, 500 per month.

I also receive daily job search from LinkedIn on my email, the average salary of these jobs are just too much.

It's okay to quit, every one can not become a software engineer/developer but if you don't quit, then there's a reward.

Because someone offered to do something for a foolish price shouldn't discourage u

I remember the day someone paid me 150k to develop a site and another friends of his get someone who developed similar site for 60k

And under 3days

It took me 1week to develop it but

Trust at first the guy was shouting I over charged him and am still delaying

I maintained my cool after one week

I delivered the site

The guy and his friends was wowed they never believe that all those features the guy that did the 3days work said was not possible I integrated it with even more till today am both of them are still referring people to me
