MelesZenawi:

Oba of Benin is living in past glory.

who knows olu of warri

Obi of Onitsha stands tall among them.

Oba is a yoruba word.
Onitsha is like a local government controlled by Obong of Calabar. Obi of Onitsha is a small boy where Obong of Calabar is . only Oba of Benin measures up to Obong of Calabar. who know Obi of Onitsha and Olu of Warri?
Even the Queen of England still writes letter to Obong of Calabar and sent her cousin to visit the Obong recently . Obong of Calabser visit Aso Rock frequently . who knows your Obi and Olu?

Obong of Calabar is like a chief in an autonomous community when compared to the likes of Obi of Onitsha or Oba of Benin.

No one knows Obong of anything. Even when prince Charles visited Nigeria last year, see the most important stools in Nigeria that he met with- Obi of Onitsha, Ooni of Ife, Saudana of Sokoto, Oba of Benin and Emir of Kano. Your obong was never considered.

Obi of Onitsha receives UK Ambassador to Nigeria in his palace in Onitsha. Show us the caliber of visitors that have ever visited obong. I am even hearing this obong thing for the first time on nairaland. Haven't even heard of it offline.

Why lumping South South and South East together?

Hian undecided

I tire ooo. Every time they want to attach SE to SS.

Well as for the SS I see the Oba of Benin. He remains the most respected.

I think it is the oba of Benin followed by the obong of calabar and the olu of warri

All the kings are lords in their own respective kingdoms they have no jurisdiction beyond their domain as powerful as the oba of benin is perceived to be he can't lord it or control any king in any town in the SS or SE region.

As a benin man it is my first time to even hear "olu of warri" i never knew warri even had a king and i am more than 30. Now who in this Nigeria doesn't know or recognize the oba of benin, both abroad and home he is well respected. That throne commands too much power to be compared. This got nothing to do with money unlike other kings that can be ordered around coz of little cash but not with "oba no mo edo". Try to attend the oba coronation but it doesn't happen often sometimes once in your life time because the oba is born not made.

I think that because there are many tribes in the South South, it would be almost impossible to find any traditional ruler who revered across board.

The Oba of Benin would a nobody in Ibibio land same as the Obong of Calabar would be a nobody in Ijaw land. They call themselves Niger Deltans but the reality is that nothing unites them

this is rubbish nonesense talk. How many people heard that ambassador visited Obi of Onitsha? many dignitaries also visit Obong of Calabar. Queen Elizabeth II still write letters to Obong of Calabar . You can't say the same for Obi of Onitsha.
Obong of Calabar throne is older than Obi of Onitsha and met the British and Portuguese first .
The coronation of new Obong of Calabar was in process when prince Charles visited.

Stop spewing nonsense. Obong whatever is a local chief in cross River.

Obi of Onitsha, Oba of Benin, Ooni of Ife, Emir of Kano are the top stools in Nigeria, that's why even prince Charles found them worthy. Obong is not considered

you are talking rubbish out of your ass . Obong of Calabar is one of first class kings in Nigeria and met the British first . the first capital was in Calabar . Calabar was a major slave port which was used to ship Igbo slaves like sardine. one of the first school and church in west Africa is in Calabar . Obong of Calabar throne is older than Obi of Onitsha.
Onitsha is dirty crime ridden with lots of bad roads and poorly built 4 stories which can collapse anytime due to erosion. no sane person would live there . Calabar is green , serene and peaceful.
Donald Duke or any other Calabar /akwa ibom man will be president before any Igbo man smells the seat.

Very funny. Obi of Onitsha has only been around since 16th century while Obong of Calabar throne has been around for 1000 years . Obi of Onitsha is a small boy compared to Obong of Calabar.
Obong of Calabar captured and sold Obi of Onitsha and his family into slavery - Checkmate!
