Chapter 15 Ann clutched the steering wheel hard, heart beating in excitement, head boiling with fury. Her hands navigated the wheel as she drove furiously on the road, ducking and dodging vehicles and people. Behind her, police vehicle sirens wailed, coming so much closer and closer. Overhead, the sun flew from its seat in the sky and dashed into black, rainy clouds. The once hot weather turned cool and cloudy all of a sudden. Puffy and huge clouds danced in the sky, afterall, wasn't it time for play? In the faraway distance, thunder rumbled and the first pellets of "heavenly water" began to descend, soon giving way to a hefty downpour. With windshield wipers rubbing over the windscreen, and the rain beating on the car like a frenzied drummer beating a talking drum, Ann sped along the road, although, now at a slower pace. Few cars passed by her, others had stopped somewhere, waiting for the rain to cease. The visibility was hazy, you could hardly see your nose if you weren't used to it. But what weather had Ann not slept or walked in, for this to scare her? She had slept in freezing snow with rain and more snow dropping on her before. Or was it the hot Arizona jungles' sun in the States where underneath she'd worked and lived, for more than six months straight with other unfortunate training kids like her right with her? The sirens behind her had ceased, due to the sounds made by the rain and the distance now between them. She had managed to keep on going in the bad weather while the police had stopped due to the poor visibility created by the weather. She turned to another untarred road, leading straight to a road which led to her base but had to stop abruptly when she could no more see anything in front of her. Silently, in the darkness, she pounded on the steering wheel angrily. The rain continued falling, oblivious to her anger. ¤¤¤ In one of the police cars, Agent Desmond grunted as the darkness deepened. Simultaneously, the SCTV app he was trying to operate on his phone crashed again for the thousandth time. Mouthing incentives, he glanced up at the other occupants in the vehicle. 'That speed is too much to be real,' he told Carl who was beside him. 'Only someone trained to drive can drive with that crazy speed'. 'Don't be stupid, Des. The person could be a professional driver in a haste to get somewhere pretty quick and not the criminal you're talking about!' Carl retorted belligerently. Desmond glared at Carl surreptitiously. His companion is really dumb, he thought. 'Okay, okay guy. When he wasn't a criminal, at least why didn't he stop for a while to give reasons for his speeding?' 'logic! Desmond, logic!' Carl yelled, if that could be called a yell, with the rain pounding hard on the car. 'Try to put yourself in his shoes. When you're being chased by someone, can you dare to stop for a while, not to talk of the police? He wanted to escape. Escape, the first thought that would have come to your mind if you were in his shoes!' Desmond chuckled. 'Alright, so do you mean he can't be arrested for overspeeding? Since you've became a lawyer,' he said. 'Who told you that? I was only telling you reasons why the person might not be the criminal you're talking about,' huffed Carl. Desmond, frustrated, turned back. Carl might be right, he knew. But he still had his suspicions about the car and its occupant. Suddenly, a thought nibbled at him. He turned to the driver. 'Boy, the vehicle was a Venza right?' he asked excitedly. 'Yes,' the driver replied. 'White in colour?' 'Desmond, what's wrong?' Carl enquired, wondering why Desmond was so excited. 'Wait please,' he said and turned back to the driver. 'Is the car white?' he asked the driver again. 'Yeah. It looked kind of new and expensive,' said the driver. 'Might you know the sex of the driver?' an agitated Desmond asked. Carl kept on staring, mouth agape. By this time, the intensity of the rain had started decreasing and visibility was fairly good now. 'I'm not so sure,' the driver replied. 'But from the silhouette I see from afar, the driver is likely to be a female.' 'That's the assassin that attacked me at Chief Martin's house the other day,' he screamed, taking others aback. 'Carl, listen to me for once in your life! Reach out to the NASCAO and describe the car to them, so they can tell us its current location. The person should be stucked somewhere now!' 'And Mr Driver, kick start the car and let's fall to the chase. We must end this once and for all!' With Carl on the phone, the driver set fire on the car and sped off. Other police cars followed suit. ¤¤¤ The car nosed its way forward under the now drizzling rain. Running waters gurgled and flowed by the side of the road. Ann was sure that by now, the police was back on her trail. She was happy she was now far from their reach. She arrived at the river where there was a bridge she would pass over. But instead of a bridge, what she saw was a huge water body full of crumbled bricks and rods. The bridge had collapsed. Ann's head flew off and she rained curses on the bridge. 'Why must it collapse today, of all days?' she asked angrily. She had no options than to turn back to the main road and then follow the long road to her street. She silently hoped she wouldn't meet the police at the main road, she wanted to be at home quick. She turned the car and started going back to the main road. Her car had hardly reached the road when police vehicles came from all directions. It was a perfect ambush. The men jumped down from the car and started coming to her. The surveillance cameras! They had monitored her with the cameras, she knew. That's why she needed helping hands, she thought. A helping hand could have been working at the cameras at home, blocking and deleting the footages capturing her, and preventing intruders from entering the base like now. She made a mental note to start making preparations to get helping hands when she overcame this. And with a slight smile, she adjusted her mask, opened the car door and got down. About twenty five police men closed in on her. To be continued Let's see if Ann will be able to overcome twenty five police men. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Chapter 16 Ann watched the twenty five police-men closely as they moved nearer. They were armed with different kinds of guns that could send you running for the hills if you were the coward type. 'Young lady in mask,' boomed a funny looking policeman as he moved closer to her, dangling a pair of handcuffs. 'You are hereby arrested for overspeeding and a suspect in a recent murder.' Ann stared at him as he proceeded to put the handcuffs on her wrists. Oh, it hit her. Her car! Why was she making mistakes for God's sake? She groaned. Well, she thought, there was no way they were going to get her that very day. And she meant it. She snatched the handcuffs from the man's hand and banged it on his head. He fell to the ground. Then she whirled round and smashed the cuffs in the face of the police man nearest to her. He yelled and held his face, gradually going to the ground. The police men drew back and pointed their guns at her, cocking sounds made rapidly. Ann started to raise her hands and made a show to kneel down. The guns of the police men followed suit, pointing at her. Ann knelt on the wet ground and started making some plans. 'well, well. Law enforcement guys, do you mean to arrest me?' she cooed belligerently. 'Of course, devil. Or why would we ambush you?' a man asked as he popped out from the circle of cops. Ann recognised him, he was the guy she knocked out at Chief Martins' house. She looked at him with regret. She should have killed him back then. 'Do you remember me?' he asked as he came more closer. ¤¤¤ Desmond knew it was her. The very lady that knocked him out that fateful day. The same lady that killed the Chief, he knew. The lady that killed his darling Sandra. At that very moment, he felt like pumping his bullets in her devilish body. And enjoy the sweet sensation of revenge for a loved one. But he knew it wasn't legal for him to kill her. At least, she was no more pulling off a resistance. The two guys she attacked had stood up and were nursing their wounds. What justifications has he to kill her? With many witnesses around? No, he dare not. He watched her masked face, the face of the devil that killed his Sandra, as she knelt on the wet road. At least, justice was here so fast. What a powerful Karma, he thought. 'well, well. Law enforcement guys, do you mean to arrest me?' he heard her ask. Popping out from the crowd of policemen, he thought about the silly question she just asked. The nerve of her, he thought, to ask the question after the offences she had committed. He wanted to say another thing, but what came out was, 'Of course. Or why would we ambush you?' He moved closer to her, although warily. He saw her staring at him with a hateful intensity. She must be regretting why she didn't kill him then. A costly mistake you made, he thought. He said, 'Do you remember me?' and watched her reaction. She was now chuckling. Was it not long ago she was glaring at him? He marvelled at her ability to switch moods so easily. 'Why not? I do!' she said, somehow mysteriously. ¤¤¤ 'why not? I do,' said Ann as she looked round. The cops were now distracted. Perfect! She silently exclaimed as she eyed her right hand side. 'Well, it's too late. There is no way you are escaping to...' Ann didn't wait for him to finish. She jumped from her kneeling posture, brushed past the dazed police officers to her right side and dashed into the thick bush beside the untarred road she had came out from. 'Get her' 'She must not escape!' 'She is a criminal' Were the sounds coming behind Ann as she flew over logs, twigs and plants in the bush. With a corner of her eyes, she noticed two officers very close behind her. She decided to get rid of them. She ran a few metres more and then slid behind a huge baobab tree. She then watched as they came closer. She soon heard their voices right behind her. 'How could she disappear all of a sudden?' she heard one ask. 'She couldn't have gone that far,' the other said breathlessly. Ann popped out from behind the trunk. 'Oh, here you are,' one said as he saw her. He lunged at her. Ann flattened her palms and banged it on the guy's chest as he came near, sending him back. She effortlessly dodged the other officer's blow, slid quickly to his back and wiped him off his feet. He fell loudly and she grabbed his rifle. She slammed the rifle on the back of the other one and he also fell. Then she banged the rifle on their heads and they were knocked out. She could hear footsteps and ruffles everywhere and started to run again. She had been running for about twenty minutes when she suddenly came to a huge clearing. She quickly hid behind a tree when she saw a middle-aged woman, clad in wrapper and head tie, washing clothes in the river. A plan came to her head. She sneaked behind the woman and hit the rifle on her head. The previously bending woman fell without a sound. Ann pitied the woman as she quickly removed her clothes. But she had no choice, did she? She thought as she exchanged their clothes. ¤¤¤ 'You made the criminal escape, with your talks!' Carl said angrily, for the hundredth time. 'shut up! Carl, keep quiet, will you? You can't blame me. Were you not defending her moments ago?' slammed a frustrated Desmond. 'That's because I didn't knew the driver was the criminal!' 'And the more reason why you need to shut your guts, Carl!' 'You can't just be ordering me around, you know? You forgot we are both equal and both put in charge of this case?' queried Carl. Desmond grinned sadly. 'Carl, if you don't mind, I'm going down there,' he pointed at the road. 'There's a path that leads from a river in the bush to the road. She is likely to get there afterall she was running towards that side. Let's go, she should be there by now,' he concluded and didn't wait for him to reply before running to a police vehicle and climbing into it. ¤¤¤ The woman readjusted the folds of her wrapper, as she walked on the narrow path, a pot of water balanced on her head. She sang with abandon as she walked along the path. Birds chanted overhead as the late afternoon sun cast golden rays on the earth. Her heart jumped to her mouth as she saw two police men coming in front of her with terrifying guns. 'Good afternoon guys,' she greeted them with a queer voice. 'Afternoon ma,' one of them greeted. The other kept on staring at her somehow. 'Please, we are looking for a particular criminal, a lady to be precise. She fled into this bush and we've not seen her since then.' 'I saw a lady coming out from the bush, running...' she was saying. She noticed their faces lit up with curiousity. 'Where did she go?' the guy said while the other one kept on looking at her. 'She said she was thirsty and I gave her some water. She is back there now,' she jerked her thumb behind her. 'Thanks ma'am,' he said. 'You can be going.' 'Thank you,' she said and passed by them and they watched her as she disappeared in the bend ahead. ¤¤¤ 'That lady is really queer,' said Desmond suspiciously. 'Come off it Des, she is just a regular native,' Carl said as they started running down the path, towards the river. 'I know. But that voice and stature... And the headtie drawn so ridiculously low...hmmm.' 'Des!' shouted Carl and Desmond kept quiet. They came to the open arena and what their eyes fell on was a body clad in the clothes of the lady, lying still on the wet ground beside a heap of clothes. A rifle laid beside the body. They peeled off the mask on the woman's face and Desmond gasped. It was not the lady. It then hit him, the woman they met on their way was the assassin. 'I said it... I knew it, that lady looks suspicious. My...,' and he took off running towards the path. Carl followed him. They came to the road, there were no signs of the lady again. Desmond knew she had escaped again. 'Bloody hell!' he moaned frustratingly, throwing angry punches in the air. ¤¤¤ Ann approached the base, breathing heavily. She had flung the pot of water away as soon as she had passed the men and had ran crazily, slowing down and running, slowing down and running to avoid room for suspicion. She got to the front door and cautiously tried pulling the door handle downwards, it opened without an ado. Someone had truly broken in. She warily walked in, there were no changes in the arrangement of everywhere. Even the security room didn't have anything. She was very sure someone had broken in but had fled, maybe after the security voice began counting. She would need to consult the surveillance cameras. FAST FORWARD Ann glanced at the shot cameras in front of her base and smiled. She would need to leave that place soonest. But first, she needed to go and prepare for the mission she had tonight.
