Folks are just shooting astray. A city being cosmopolitan has far deeper connotations and meanings than just the population statistic. A few here. Lingua Franca. What is the language of work and play. What is the proportion of people that can freely connect. Voting. How many will remain to exercise theit franchise locally, i.e. they are active in the politics of their locality. Interest and investments. As exemplified by land, property, businesses of tangible nature particularly with a longer term outlook. Customs and traditions. How pervasive or imposing are local customs and traditions including religion on the general population.... And on and on. There are so many indices that determine the degree to which a city state can be termed cosmopolitan. I particularly like the last one about customs and traditions and I have related it here before. At a time I was in a riverine portharcourt community to sée a friend, a non native and along a chat about keeping pets he did admit that it was against the host culture for female dogs to be kept as pets. I simply told him he was not in a city but in a village. The community he lives has so much influence over his life from security to endless community relations meetings steeped in local traditional practices he has to oblige. A cosmopolitan city on the other hand offers all residents a feel of liberty to live anywhere, operate any business freely, work, worship and play without difficulties and interact with the locals without encumberances. Consider this and your list will be a lot shorter especially in comparison with the great cities of the world. 3 Likes |

emyrald91: Look all these states you mention have non natives living there. In truth all states in Nigeria have non natives. But look closely and you observe that they mostly live in enclaves because parts of such cities are off limits to non indigenes. They simply donot have the support services aliens need to school, work, worship and play. Most states in the north suffer from this so I will not call them purely cosmopolitan except the definition is altered. As long as a non native will stick out in any locality and attract attention that locality is not cosmopilitan. The city must be able to serve every need equitably and without prejudice. A native should not jump the queue for social services or be considered superior or more deserving in any way. I write as I remember things rhat I have seen over the years in different places because I have lived in the four cardinal zones for years, west, north, south and east in that order and I know what it means to be a Nigerian. 1 Like |
