THE PROBLEM

Fellow Nigerians, the time has come for us to unite and fight against public corruption in Nigeria.

Acts of corruption has been causing and will continue to cause deaths of Nigerians. Innocent Nigerian security operatives die when money that would have been used to provide suitable security equipments for them is looted is looted by their superiors.

Nigerians die daily from sickness and accident because money that should have been used to provide good roads and health care facilities has been been looted by one politician or public official somewhere. See NDDC for example.

Nigeria as a country is dying slowly because public officials have become so corrupt that corruption is now institutional.

Are we going to sit and watch as the citizens and country die due to corruption?

THE SOLUTION

I believe strongly that a death sentence would be the most deterring instrument against corruption and acts of corruption by public officials.

If we can prescribe death sentence for kidnapping and armed robbery, then death sentence should also be prescribed for corruption.

If we can prescribe death sentence for blasphemy against then death sentence should also be prescribed for corruption.

CHECKS AGAINST FAILURE

1. A trial timeline not exceeding 12 months should be implemented.

For those who will use sickness and need to travel abroad as means to stall their cases, they must state how long their medical need will be for and the length of time they need to go for their medical checkup and return back should fall within the trial timeline of six months... Lastly the trial must be able to proceed in their absence.

They should also declare all their assets home and abroad and agree to forfeit everything to Nigeria government if they fail to return within the agreed time to continue and finish their trial.

WAY FORWARD?

We obviously cannot wait for corrupt public officials to sponsor or support this kind of bill.

I'm certain we have intelligent Nigerians home and abroad who understand the process of making laws and passing bills.

Let's find someone who can write and word the bill to meet the requirements of existing law and legal terminology.

Let's register an NGO and use it to sponsor the bill if necessary.

We have expert social media marketers home and abroad. Let's engage them to promote the bill and it's content on all social media platforms in Nigeria to get popular support.

All these will require money and we should be willing to contribute financially and source for funding home and abroad.

If you support this move please like and drop your comment on how we can better organise ourselves and actualise this.

Seun and Lalasticlala please advise and move to FP so we can guage the opinions of other Nigerians. Let it be on record that the idea of this was birthed here on Nairaland and you guys played your own part.

Alright. Thanks

*********************************************

My suggestions:
It should also be included in the bill; Any public officer found guilty must also forfeit all their assets home and abroad alongside the death sentence. And their immediate family will not hold any public office for the next 100 years.

OP, the senators and house of rep members that will support this bill are all thieves ...

You want them to use their own hands to sign their arrest warrant?

These people that would've made things easier for this country are fantastically corrupt and will never sign or pass a bill that will affect them in return.

We know that many of them won't... That is why we have to push for it ourselves... Let's kill the spirit of impossibility within us... If we can get the required public support for it then it will be the voice of the people against theirs...

Nigeria must move forward even if it means using their skulls as stepping stone.

If we get this bill in shape and send it there and have one million Nigerians in front of NASS everyday when they are deliberating the issue they won't have any choice.

Firstly, not many of them, but all of them will never support the bill.

Secondly, to kill the spirit of impossibility in the minds of the youths. we need to dwell into the ICT fully. Use the power of the media to hack into their voice calls and emails and have their discussion on irrelevance and looting tendencies published on social media and have it trend. Or construct a nuclear bomb and suspend it through a drone while they are gathered and kill them all.

Because, the bill will not be received...And you can never have upto 1000 youths come out to protest and you risk their lives in the hands of those drunk policemen that will want to do everything to please those senators that pay them heavily and see to their immediate needs and have most of them send their kids outside the country through NNPC and NDDC scholarships.

Please those with negativity mindset, those who believe this cannot be achieved should avoid this thread and topic.

Carry your moral killing spirit somewhere else...

If you post to discourage this movement then we will know you are an agent of the corrupt class or a corrupt person trying to kill the spirit of this movement before it even starts.

We are not demanding a change of government.

We are not demanding that the president steps aside.

We are simply demanding that a non retroactive law be passed that prescribes death penalty for public officials found guilty of corruption.

If you are contributing, tell us how we can actualise this goal... Tell us how we can make the law watertight to avoid abuse and loopholes.

If you are interested in joining the NGO that will be formed then signify and state your area of expertise....

We will need lawyers, programmers... Accountants, planners, Bloggers, Social media experts...Writers...etc. Please indicate your area of expertise and let's get the ball rolling.

Apply APREC-AUTONOMOUS POLICING RESOURCING AND ELECTIONEERING CONTROL FOR OUR 36 CONSTITUTIONAL STATES NOW

AND LIMIT CORRUPTION TO A MANAGEABLE GRASSROOT LEVELS.
Re: Opinion: Death Sentence Bill For Corrupt Public Officials In Nigeria. by orisa37: 3:12am On Aug 17, 2020
Instead of Mr President dictating who and who to arrest for Corruption, let the 36 CONSTITUTIONAL STATES GOVERNMENTS SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR CONTROL OF CORRUPTION DEMOCRATICALLY AT THE GRASSROOTS.
Re: Opinion: Death Sentence Bill For Corrupt Public Officials In Nigeria. by 143WaZoBia: 8:32am On Aug 17, 2020
In as much this sounds very cool and all our problems solving we must understand that it will make life even harder for us. If you want democracy have it, if you want death sentences you will have it, trust me politicians in a country as complex and vulnerable as Nigeria will always find a new way. They are going to pass the law and put backdoors then start agitating for laws that will kill you at every slightest means, so much that you are going to beg the international community to remove death sentence from our constitution.
What I think we can do is to make our laws stricter than it is but that also even you and me will have to adjust or readjust to depending if you have ever been out of here or not. Many things we do as Nigerians on daily basis are crimes. From slapping your house maids, to hitting your wife and kids, even taking and giving bribe in our constitution is a crime but almost all of us have adjusted well to bribing our ways out of everything, e no go funny o. Politicians may pass laws that will kill you for watching porn on your phones or even insulting your neighbors lol.
What I think is important is that we enforce our laws, the British or US or any sane country don’t need death sentence to make their people act right because they enforce their laws. We already have laws against everything including corrupt public office holders but how do we enforce the law? How do we enforce this death sentence when we have it?

Anyone found guilty of diverting funds(above N50m) meant for national development should be made to forfeit all assets he/she possess(both the one gotten from proceed of the fraud and the one gotten prior to committing the fraud)
In addition, they should be given the option of a 20years jail term or death sentence. If the jail term option was chosen, their family will be the one to take care of their wellbeing by paying a stipulated amount of money to the Government every month.

You are a realist, I love you. Now here comes our solution if we really want to take our destiny into our hands. Let’s take it. I for one want to be one of those squads that hacked and published confidential evidence that will embarrass our politicians locally and internationally.

A special economic and financial crimes court needs to be set up... this way there would be a speedy discharge of judgement.
This way, we would know the amount of conviction done yearly

I remember Jonathan administration try setting up something of this nature but it was frustrated. However, it can be pushed for.

Op post it on change.org let Nigerians sign this petition. Leave NL mods out of this. Let me warn you though. If a law like you are suggesting will ever be enacted, politicians will use it to destroy opponents just as governors use impeachment to remove deputies. The latter would be like child's play. Just imagine that of all corruption cases so far investigated by EFCC are majorly opposition voices while all those who join APC or APC leaders are made ministers or not investigated. Can you recall how many times EFCC arrested Atiku inlaw for corruption while keeping blind eyes on Bullion van and babariga vidoes?

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll post it on change.org since Seun and his mods are comfortable with the corruption going on in Nigeria and won't want to champion a serious discussion on the issue and how to address it.

Tens of nonsensical threads about Big Brother Naija have made fp the past week. How does BBN solve the problems of corruption and stunted development in Nigeria?

On Friday and Sunday you promote religious topics and then the other days of the week you promote immorality and rumours that serve more to mislead and misinform the average Nigerian youth. It's quite unfortunate.

Amitez, as per your concern about it being abused I believe that once this law is set, a strong NGO should be formed in Nigeria to champion and pressure government into investigating corruption cases.

This NGO will be unique because it will have a website where petitions against corrupt individuals can be posted after due investigation to ascertain it's credibility by the NGO's team... After posting on the website, the NGO will also support the petitioner in submitting same to the government agency responsible for investigating such case and keep tabs and updates on the site to monitor progress.

Right now, most of what we deal with are mere rumours and half truths from media houses who can't take the pain to do proper investigation but can quickly post apologies when it is shown that their publication has no factual backing.

We have no public records of petitions submitted, by who and against who... We are mostly left with half baked truth/lies from media houses that leaves everyone confused... And many of them are even sponsored to cause more confusion.

Strong NGOs tackling the issues alongside a watertight law that gives deadlines and penalties for failing to investigate petitions will prevent abuse and misuse of the law... There are more ways and people will have better ideas to make it work. Nigeria won't be the first country to implement such law...China, North Korea, Iran, Morocco, Vietnam and Philippines have successfully used it to deter looters and bribe takers... We can also do it

It's very easy for anyone to publicly declare their support for the bill and get elected and then come out to tell the masses that he/she have carefully gone through the bill and that the bill needs to be reviewed and that they will have to understudy the bill to enable it's review faster and will use 8yrs trying to review the bill....

You can never trust our politicians....They will promise you heaven on earth to get to power and will eventually shut their doors against you after grasping the power.

The easiest way is to assassinate them... With all their security guards and bullet proof houses and car.... Plot a well define assassination and eliminate anyone with a corrupt case and you will see how the rest of them will return the looted money to avoid death.....

Taking the law into our hands is the only way to have them pay serious attention to the rot that they've caused this nation.
