As Nigeria battle with the novel corona virus pandemic the Federal government has given fresh update on school resumption.

The FG through the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, during daily press briefing, on Tuseday, said schools including Tertiary institutions would resume when it is safe to do so.

The Sun reports that Mustapha made this statement in response to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at the briefing of the task force on Monday, August 17.

Recall that the students' association had earlier noted that though the pandemic hit many nations across the globe, Nigeria should take appropriate steps to remedy the situation and let the society run as seamless as possible.

"It is in this light that we appreciate the call by the National Association of Nigerian Students for the reopening of tertiary institutions.

"As a listening government, we wish to state that education is topmost on the priority list and the reopening of our institutions remain critical, within set safety parameters,” the PTF chairman said in his response on Monday.

Also, the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Emeka Nwajiuba, during the PTF pres briefing on Friday, August 14, said the FG is doing it best to ensure the Academic Staff Union Of University (ASUU), call of it strike.

He also reiterated the appeal which some stakeholders had made to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to place a moratorium on strike actions for the next three years, in order to allow the Nigerian university system to rebuild itself before they start further agitations.

“We are working with science and data and when the country is ready to reopen, I do not believe that ASUU will be unreasonable or illogical about resuming. They have over 10, 000 professors out of nearly 65, 000 lecturers and I am almost confident that they would know as well as we do that the children need to go back to school as long as we are ready,” Nwajiuba said.

In another development the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has announced that post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) screening for the 2020 admission processes will begin by Monday, September 7.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, the registrar of JAMB made this on Monday, August 10, a virtual meeting with vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts of tertiary institutions.

Oloyede explained that the screening was moved from Friday, August 21, to accommodate candidates who would be writing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) this year.

These people keep on hiding under the umbrella of "safety", so as to keep on dribbing ASUU, SSANU, NASU & others.

While it may look good to some folks, it is the students that will be the most affected cos their academic year keep on shifting.

Well, whenever two elephants fight, it is the grasses that will bear the brunt.

We have never seen a major attack from CORONAVIRUS..

It's always best to err on the side of caution.

good one...pls jus reopen when its save, even if its next year no problem bcoz school would always wait than asking us to pay special fees because of covid or resuming school again only for ASUU to announce another strike after few months..
they shoulf use this available time to trash all thier cases wit ASUU to enjoy sweet sailing when they finally reopen..

...when it is safe, is indirectly or probably saying when a vaccine is discovered. There is a conspiracy theory here, and the theory is, a vaccine had been discovered by Russia, but the world is brainwash to believe that, that is not the authentic vaccine they are waiting for. Vaccine from either USA, UK, or probably GERMANY.
A cursory look will tell us that this is a Western world conspiracy theory which the world is meant to believe against Russia, Nigeria inclusive. Our PTF/NCDC believe there is no vaccine yet, since USA is the only country our officials trust to declare a vaccine that/and will believe.
if you have followed this event very carefully, since the outbreak of this various, Nigeria had always been following the footsteps of the USA. When the USA looked down their economy, Nigeria follow suit, even where our cases were fewer, when they began gradual easing up of the economy, Nigeria also follow suit, when their domestic flights resumes, ours also resumed. So, what are we saying, Nigeria is only using the western world situation to determine theirs, which in every ramifications are not synonymous but antonym to each other. We must begin to look inwardly to make decisions as it affects our current situations, not using foreign policy as a yardstick or parameter for comparison and measurement. This is the main reason we are where we are today. We copy/we paste, even without editing.

Can you suggest what can be done? Some hostels in some universities built for four had been converted to twelve officially and have like twenty residents. How do we manage that?

Nigeria is really cursed with brainless leaders!

I'm very sure that the continued closure of tertiary institutions in Nigeria has nothing to do with safety of students.

It's obvious u not a medical student, hence u wouldn't know what a vaccine is and how long it takes to produce one. The preclinical and clinical trials take years to complete. A vaccine said to be produced in less than a year has question marks.

We should've taken the education to online classrooms with exceptions to maybe specific projects like our counterparts in the West are doing but nah...
