it's a welcome development,
owing to the fact that Lagos port needs to be decongest. ....

This is better. Traffic will reduce a lot, and those stupid tankers will be few on Lagos roads.
If the movement is by sea... Or railway.

I think Amaechi should have focused more on Lagos- Shagamu-Benin-Onitsha railway than Lagos-Ibadan and Lagos-Katsina

Yes he is really working for south East.

He have killed at least 300 eastern youths doing peaceful protest.

Is that not wonderful work from him?

There are protests going on currently in Belarus against the leader security have been ordered to quell it. Some lives have been lost. Some are in harsh conditions in prisons...

What's the point of making a choice knowing the end thereof!

Big time story. They just go there to snap pictures. Which rail line connects West and East? Fg refused to include East in it's project plans. Now you want to make Onitsha SEAPORT functional through road cargo lifting hoping that rail line would work some time in the future?? And you are celebrating and empty THOUGHT. it is just A THOUGHT which fg knows it's the people's desire. Nothing is realistic in this event.

Is the second Niger bridge having the rail line attachment? And how ready is it now?? The connections rail from Lagos ready Nothing to celebrate, seriously. Nothing

They should keep it going abeg. Lagos has been overrun by container trucks and all sorts. Makes no sense that a country of 180 million dependent on imports would rely on 1 main port.

We need to put aside petty politics and simply do what is best for everyone.

sbaks:
If mistakenly taken to onitsha of all places, FORGET IT. They'll make sure they keep it going. Igbos are the "main importers and exporters we have in this country" as in they constitute the MAJORITY so they will MORE THAN LOVE IT. Besides, they can even maneuver their way easily there with customs people as na their hometown na. It will depopulate Lagos GREATLY
Though I "think" this may be a deliberate attempt by the government to get at the SW (maybe the job crew). "I think"

OpinionCounts:

If the government and maritime agency know this to be true, why not berth the containers in Portharcourt port instead of berthing in Lagos then doing another round of transporting down to the east? That looks to me like poor logistics arrangement, waste of money, waste of time, unnecessary risk exposure etc..and trust me, knowing the kind of corrupt country we live in, cargo owners will now be made to pay multiple port landing/handling fees, this expenses they will now transfer into the cost of their goods and Las Las na we the consumers go pay for the government's short sightedness.
True! But it was done for a "reason".
On the long run Sha it's still GOOD NEWS

What is the use of calaba and onne sea ports?
Y move containers when they can duck straight at the sea ports within the SE and SS?

It would also reduce the CHURCH MEMBERS of some people's (national headquarters) as mass Exodus would "LOOM" Lagos. Though a welcome development, some folks will never like it

Ok,
but we must not copy everything from the west, why not develop a system whereby we can have special stations along the railway where we can have container depot specially for that purpose instead of going all the way east.

Goods destin to Onitsha will be cleared in Onitsha not Apapa, it's more cheaper with barge, a Lash barge can carry 385

It’s about time. How can a country of over 200 million people be importing from a single port. It just never made sense to me throughout my life but I was hearing all types of dumb reasons why it makes sense.

Some Human beings are willing to justify any evil if you give them the chance.
It is so unfortunate. Even small Ghana have two busy port in Tema and Takoradi serving the eastern and western parts of their country.

In Nigeria, someone from SW will give reasons why one port should be serving the whole country. At the end he suffer from it, spend countless hours on traffic jams and may lose his life or that of his people from container accidents.

There are many water fronts in Nigeria to build ports so that people that are living in Lagos will have better life while accidents will reduce on the road.

Considering the fact that a significant number of the containers that berth in Apapa goes straight to the South Eastern part of the country

Then they should clamour for custom formation and create a blue channel for all their cargoes .

That is the way the port can be decentralized.

Economic equilibrium beckons.

Ibaka deep sea port is the major port that will take traffic off Lagos and open the entire Eastern and Northern flanks of Nigeria. Ibaka in Akwa Ibom is in the South South region. It is closer to all Eastern and South South States than Lagos ports are. It is also closer to all Northern states than Lagos Ports are. Guess what, it is a deep sea port that can take large ocean going vessels unlike Onne Port.
