Awesome!

This again corroborates my earlier comment about our well-known Yoruba traditional account which states that the first home for all (from where dispersion took place for the different ethno-linguistic groups[b] was in a Yoruba center called [b]Ife-Ooyelgbo situated further in the interior close to a very large body of water.

Today, this ancient Yoruba traditional account has been corroborated by both linguistics, archaeology, and ethnography — as I have shown here.

In other words, some region around the Niger-Benue confluence (and further up the middle Niger) is the point of dispersal of all these people (i.e. the different Yoruba subgroups, the different Edo subgroups, the different Igbo subgroups, et al.) as distinct ethno-linguistic groups and subgroups.

Ile-Ife, once settled after this dispersal, thus emerged as the first super power and first group/sub-group to attain civilization and fluorescence in the Guinea forest.

Kingdom-founding migrations (aka monarchy-establishing groups) thus began to roll-out from Ile-Ife to the other groups (including the Edos and the Igbos) as well as the other Yoruba sub-groups of the region.

It is to this kingdom-founding migrations from Ife that many sun-groups in today’s southern Nigeria (and other people) refer when the adduce their traditional account to claim Ile-Ife as the origin for their kingdom.

To quote the words of Robin Horton in his “Ancient Ife”:

“Phase 1. (500B.C. - 900 A.D.) — From a nucleus somewhere in the are of the Niger-Benue Confluence, proto-Yoruba speakers fanned out into the lands to the west and south-west. Among the migrants were the ancestors of the people of Ife. ••• .

Phase 2. (900 A.D. - 1450 A.D.) — Ife emerged as a power in the region after the main wave of Yoruba expansion and cultural differentiation. ••• The result was a large and prosperous population, a powerful army, and a magnificent material culture. Once the city had become a power in the region, its rulers embarked on the subjugation of commercially important outlying areas, sending royal princes to take charge of their administration.

Phase 3. (1450 AD. - 1650 AD.) — Two outlying provincial centers, Benin and Oyo, developed new trade routes linking seaboard, forest and savannah. ••• These commercial and military development tipped the balance wealth and power away from Ife and toward Benin and Oyo. Both of them later became independent of Ife. •••”

Tao,
You are correct. The indigeneous people of Niger Benue support what you say, as seen in that research work by Igala. I didnt know Yoruba was an indigeneous group in Kebbi until I saw a post in nairaland alluding to that. On further digging I found it to be true. We migrated south from the original home in the middlebelt.

If you read Nupe's history you will even discover that we share some totems and oriki with them. Even our facial marks with that of middlebelt people all the way to Borno are very similar in style and etching. Same with body tattoos.

We have gone through three known epochs of civilizations in Nigeria namely Iron, Terracotta and Bronze.

Ife has all three. Benin has all three and all were introduced to it from Ife. Ibo has only one. What does that tell you?

Where is their Iron civilization, where is their Terracotta? That one they claim is theirs is a suspect. They must explain why they dont have Iron and Terracotta but all of a sudden jumped to Bronze. There is a scam!

Yes, we Yorubas are the indigenous people of that center of dispersion as our ancient traditional account has clearly asserted.

And our ancient traditional account has been vindicated by modern archaeological, linguistic and ethnographic evidence as I have just demonstrated in my last comment on the preceding page.

In other words, Ife-Ooyelagbo birthed the diverse peoples as different/distinct ethnolinguistic groups, while Ile-Ife birthed the diverse civilizations and monarchies which came to organize the peoples.

Cheers!

PS: The dating of their Igbo-Ukwu bronzes have been flooded with scholarly disclaimers since the late 70s till date — including by Professor Thurstan Shaw himself who did the initial work.

The earlier dates have been severely punctured and exposed to be an erroneous exaggeration, and that the artifacts are of much later date subsequent to those of Ife.

See my comment HERE for the details on this.

The similarities between Igbos and Yoruba’s are too much. If you look at the following you'll be shocked.

Igbo Yoruba
1. Egwu Egwu - Egungun
2. Aja - Aje
3. Oba - Oba
4. Orisa / Olisa - Orisa

And a whole lot. The Oni is even collaborating more to this similarities. Only if both can let go of their pride and carry out more extensive research and archeological findings, a lot will be exposed.

In Nigeria after the Nok, Igbo Ukwu comes next. We've even had more archeological finding in other Igbos areas such as Nsukka, Okigwe etc.

You and BabaRamota are funny. You're grasping at straws. The civilization of Igbo Ukwu is now in international scholarly research. It's similar to doubting the civilization of Egypt or Nok. You can only doubt something that is fishy and not something with strong backing.

Thank you for admitting blatantly that you have nothing intellectual to say to challenge the conclusions of historical scholarship (including Professor Shaw’s himself who did the earlier work on Igbo-Ukwu) which have come to show that the earlier dates associated with the Igbo-Ukwu artifacts were erroneously exaggerated. cheesy

If you care to see his conclusion (and reference to the peer-reviewed journal article), then check HERE

Otherwise, it is absolutely pointless to continue to engage your obviously unlearned, emotional, and wishful personal thoughts.

The ancient site of Igbo Ukwu is situated in the modern day homelands of Igbo peoples of southern Nigeria. Archaeological finds were first discovered at this site in 1939 when an Igbo farmer named Isaiah Anozie chanced upon several bronze objects as he was digging a cistern to hold water in the dry season. It was not until 1959 that the archaeologist Thurstan Shaw excavated this site and discovered that it must have been part of a storehouse for ritual objects (Shaw 1977). Dated to the 9th or 10th century A.D., Igbo Ukwu represents one of the earliest examples of bronze casting in sub-Saharan Africa.

Even the first of your four attachments here is an Ife artefact. grin (see attached screenshots below) — The 1st shows what you attached and claimed is Igbo-Ukwu's. The 2nd is from S.P. Blier, Art in Ancient Ife, (2012), p.74. The 3rd is from F. Willett, Bronze and Terra-Cotta Sculptures from Ita Yemoo, Ife, (1959), p.139.

Be embarrassing yourself there.

The attached art is Ife origin and is a stool. The fact you are calling it Igboukwu supports my earlier post that you have stolen artworks belonging to other people and attached Igbo to them.

Start by refuting Benin and Igala first. Ife is far above your league.

We are going to read from GT Basden when I get time. He said many things about Igbo, including Nri. Now, why is Basden's account important? It is important because he lived among you and witnessed your primitiveness. In the age whiteman transitioned you from primitive into civilized society one of them lived with you and recorded who you were. You can deceive everybody but you cannot deceive GT Basden.

When I get your time, Nairaland will hear from Basden, and it will go into records.
