That will not stop our rapacious political leaders from placing automobile order from foreign companies.

Are the parts also made in Nigeria? I see no big sense in buying the parts from China and assembling them in Nigeria. Just saying.

We should encourage and support our own please. Just like this android phone called Afrione. I can count the number of people using the device and it is very very low.

I don't even know that afrione but I can tell u it's also just assembling they do.

It's not possible to make various parts and chipset of phones in Nigeria. We simply don't have the technology.

NAPTU would have sounded somewhat original than NORD.

Nkie and Nike are not the same just as abidas and adidas are not the same.

Great job Nordmotion!

To the very little minded bigots talking down on their supposed brothers and sisters from other parts of the country, well you lack understanding of how these things work. No ethnic group is an Island! People that succeed in breaking away from bigotry have more than 80% chance of being very successful.

Why concerned about who owns it rather than be happy things of this sort are springing up in Nigeria. Tribalists will always be tribalists when you see them.

Who cares?

When they have Nollywood vs Hollywood, it is hardpress to expect people not to believe that it is the same copycat just like fake accents. Ford is a global brand and the people at Nord are ignorant to use "Nord". Most people do not have the time nor interest to start digging their history. It is a Ford knock off just like a fake Rolex. They should have known better. I apologize for asking Nigerians to think. It is an impossible task.

For the fact that it has to be explained says it all.

This is just another Completely Knocked Down vehicle kit from China that’s simply assembled here in Nigeria.

It’s not the way forward IMHO.

Nigerians are not stupid and they’ll simply continue to buy toks once they compare the price.

That's more than just mere assembly. No car manufacturer (not even Toyota, Honda) all its vehicle parts 100%. There are components that are manufactured by the plants, there are some they source from outside. Surely you can't expect a new startup to have the capacity to manufacture the heavy parts when our steel mills are not even working. It takes a lot to be an industrialist in Nigeria...

By the way, it's the same thing Innoson has been doing. The major parts being manufactured here are the body, seats (probably), dashboard and other lighter components based on what can be obtained locally. So it is more than just mere assembly.

Thanks for the clarification, brother. I used to think all car manufacturers do everything themselves. Pardon my ignorance, but the main part of a car is the engine, which is what I was trying to say.

What of Honda and Hyundai. Compare the logo too.

Apoda atole oloripelebe. Shut up your dirty mouth and ride your Innoson trash boxes and your Ugama hiace mobile coffins used by PMT, let us ride our JAC and Nord in peace.
Very wicked and bitter soul. You've finally seen that omoluabis are not your father's mates.

Memories.

I have written about this before and I think today is a good day to write about it agin.

In 1989 the Malaysian ambassador to Nigeria went to Dodan Barracks to present a car to President Babangida. I watched the event on the NTA Network News. They said that the car was called Proton and that it was the first car brand that was made in Malaysia.

The newspapers went crazy the next day. Columnists wrote that the Malaysians came to Nigeria in the 1960s to take samples of our palm oil and that they had become the biggest palm oil selling nation in the world by 1989. They said that Nigeria was ahead of Malaysia in all indices in the 1960s, but now Malaysia had produced a car while Nigeria could not produce anything.

Imagine how I felt when I discovered that the Proton was just a rebadged Mistubishi Lancer. The Peugeot 504 that was made in Nigeria in 1989 had more local components in it than that Proton Saga!

Today Proton actually owns Lotus.

Nord means north in lots of Romance languages. There are actually many companies named Nord (there's even another automobile company in Europe named Nord, but they don't do the same thing that their Nigerian counterparts do).

The reason that so many companies are named Nord is because it can also mean forward or upward.

So, that was how they came by the name...

Not bad.

Personally, I was beginning to think that it was a combination of some initials or something along that line.

Thanks for the clarification, sir. I greatly appreciate that timely intervention.

Yea, I used to think that way too till I realized that manufacturing is not as complex as we think it is. Engine manufacturing is the most complex cos it involves a lot of research and development. If we wait till we have that capacity, a lot of African countries wouldn't be able to produce any vehicle for a few decades. There are non-branded good engine manufacturers all over Japan and China...
