COVID-19: NAF CONDUCTS TRAINING ON SAMPLE COLLECTION FOR MEDICAL LAB SCIENTISTS, TECHNICIANS

As part of capacity building initiatives to help curb the spread of COVID-19 by improving early detection through the scaling up of testing, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Medical Services (MS) Branch has conducted a One-day COVID-19 Sample Collection Training for its Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians. The training, which was done in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) Nigeria, was held today, 20 August 2020, at the 063 NAF Hospital (063 NAFH) Abuja with 34 medical laboratory personnel, comprising 16 scientists and 18 technicians, in attendance.

In his opening remarks at the training workshop, the Chief of Medical Services (CMS), Air Commodore Gideon Bako, who was represented by the Director, Professions Allied to Medicine (DPAM), Headquarters NAF, Group Captain David Babalola, recalled that the NAF, with support from the NCDC and WHO, had earlier trained a significant number of NAF personnel on patient movement as well as infection prevention and control, which was also geared towards limiting the spread of COVID-19 in the NAF. He disclosed that those earlier trained had subsequently organized step-down trainings for other laboratory staff. “I am happy to note that the benefit of the training is already being reaped as all COVID-19 samples of NAF personnel as well as some sister Services are being collected by our trained medical laboratory personnel”, he added.

While appreciating the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for approving the conduct of the training, the CMS stated that the participants would also conduct step-down training for other laboratory staff in their various units after successful completion of the sample collection training. According to him, the development of professional capacity of NAF medical personnel has continued to receive particular attention from the CAS. He also expressed gratitude to the NCDC and WHO for always partnering with the Service in its quest to ensure qualitative medical service delivery in the NAF. He urged the participants to take maximum advantage of the training as the knowledge gained would help to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commander 063 NAFH, Group Captain Muzamil Muhammed, stated that the current NAF leadership has been in the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 through various support services to national health authorities and provision of its medical facilities for use as COVID-19 Isolation and Treatment Centres. He noted, for instance, that 063 NAFH Abuja, which serves as one of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s Isolation/Treatment and Sample Collection Centres, has processed over 250 COVID-19 samples in the past 4 months. He added that the current training was organized because of the need to expand the sample collection capability to many other laboratory personnel, especially those serving in NAF units outside Abuja.

Some of the areas covered during the training were Laboratory Bio-safety; Principles of PPE: Donning and Doffing as well as COVID-19 Sample Collection, Packaging and Transportation. The One-day training, which also featured elaborate practical demonstrations, was facilitated by Mrs Ekanem Blessing Udoh and Ms Ngozi Pamella from the WHO.

The air corps is whole service of its own, with huge trainning, maintenance, skills, engineers, ratings, funding reqirements, hangar, logistics etc. It is very easy to wish it but haha,,, its hectic to establish and sustain it.

The matter had been assessed top army experts and no one heard from them anymore.

Giving the army air combat would make officers weak and lazy in tactics,,, always calling the air corps like the incapable US army. I prefer the NA fight and suffer like they are doing now. Therein lies our strength.

Air support should be left where it is,,,...... with the air force.

So when the Nigeria military is fighting another military, and they start pounding our military with their jets, bombers and attack helicopters, you will tell the country military they are not fighting fair be that o

Nice submission. But the fact remains that all the capabilities you mentioned can be better provided by the NAF, by restructuring their operations and buying more platforms.

Faster airlift, CAS, recon, etc can be better provided by the NAF if their organization is restructured and streamlined with the army's structure. And more platforms provided.

I don't support army officers having direct control of air assets cos all they would do is call in air support for the least of battles. That is the bane of the US army, they are dependent on air corps for everything.

So, restructure the NAF to align with the army's operations , so that the CAS, airlift, recon, etc are all NAF's job.

Without air support, even Russia will be struggling in Syria.

you're right NAF does have strike capabilities against BHT/ ISWAP but it's limited hence procurement for advance systems.
For example the MI35M is more advanced than the other Mi24v/35p
The super Tucano is upgraded than the alpha jet and can deliver guided munitions
It can be used for ISR ( advantage over the alpha jet) and CAS
The alpha jet also depends on Other ISR platforms during interdiction missions for target acquisitions hence the procurement of Drones,JF17,super Tucano
For low fuel cost and longer Loitering time Drones play a big role

Nigeria is an oil producing nation and as such, l want to believe we have the capacity to refine aviation fuel. So fuel costs should not be too much of an issue.

The fuel consumption of a UAV is very minimal compared to any turboprop aircraft or any other aircraft for that matter. With a UAV you present a continuous and never ending threat to the enemy 25/7/365 night and day. It gives you also ISTAR over a the entire area of contention.

It doesn't take one year to train a UAV pilots, ask Turkey how long it took them to train the Libyan operators.

The Alpha Jet can be upgraded that means if we wanted we could get 24 used Alpha jets from Germany today to increase our capacity have them upgraded for precision munitions. That's in the HERE and NOW not in 3/4 years time.

We are in a DIRE situation it means we need assets like yesterday. Not futurist but now.

The Tucano A29 is not a game changer, what had it done for Niger and Ghana. An asset yes but a game changer no.

You must look at cost benefit analysis and in that regard returns.

Look at the cost of the Tucano and then consider holistically the various other AVAILABLE HERE and NOW Options and alternatives both ground and air. That would make a difference.

With my very little understanding and experience l can say that there is a pre- occupationa with the best deal that results in personal benefit as opposed to what is the best option to end this war.

My mistake l got that wrong it's actually Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

Before you prepare for the future you must also deal with the PRESENT.

Germany have a considerable inventory of Alpha Jets in storage. It will take weeks to upgrade with retro fitting.

Precision weaponry is not the exclusive preserve of the A29. And you should look at the costs involved with USA sourced precision weaponry.

I always talk about " BEST VALUE "

With regard to Boko at this rate we are already facing an existential threat and you are talking about future life cycle of air frame. If they can give us just 6-8 years of operational effectiveness I happy. We need to stop Boko and all its affiliates NOW not later.

The pertinent question is how much will it cost to procure 12 Alpha jets and upgrade them for night and day precision weapon capability. ❓ ❓

Don't forget these A29 are costings in upwards of £38 million per aircraft. What are the associated maintenance and operational costs.

The NAF should effectively by now be experts in everything Alpha Jet. So our maintenance costs are much lower with some degree of local content parts available. Fuel costs are high but that's the pay off. Which is not a huge consideration.

In my opinion the Alpha Jet is our most reliable and cost-effective asset so far.
