According to the landlords, tenants have been refunded their rents. But the secretary of the Ikoku Traders Union, Nnmadi Levi have narrated how the spare parts traders were called in the early hours of Wednesday by local guards to report that men in police uniform, together with suspected thugs and cultists from the area came in their numbers to beat them up and chased them out of the market before they allegedly began vandalizing of their shops. He said the union leaders gathered this morning at their shops to witness first hand the level of vandalization and destruction and described it as wickedness. Nnamdi Levi decried that the traders who have been at home for months following the long closure of the market by the state government are yet to even recover from the long lockdown and wondered why such wickedness will be perpetrated against the traders. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx2lEDePYTo 1 Like

You were given quit notice but you decided to be stubborn now you’re accusing them of looting your shops? Check well it’s your colleagues looting your shops and not the indigenous people. 4 Likes |

I'm sad to see this unfold knowing we're in the midst of a pandemic. The reality is that the nuisance we in Portharcourt experience from this part sellers is legendary! Most of the landlords can't collect common rent of 50k yearly without court orders and legal fights and the unsightly nature of the environment is enough to quit them. For those who don't know these people have been given a site to relocate over 5years ago and they boast that nothing can happen! 1 Like |

Imagine paying them back and they still didn’t move out. Meanwhile some are forced out of the property they paid for elsewhere. |

Jajaslim: Nigeria is the way it is because of the mentality of people like you, People like you should start asking the right questions before opening their mouth to vomit nonsense, Yes there is a quit notice but you should understand that we are talking about market and it is not house where two/three people live, it is where thousand of people fend for their daily bread. Your question would have been was there an alternative place for them to relocate. You are here insulting and accusing them of not complying to the notice but you are not putting yourself in their shoes, today is there own tomorrow may be yours you never know. If there is an alternative and they ignored it, then that will be on them but when there is not, what do you want them to do? 2 Likes 1 Share |

IkwerrePikin: Inasmuch I don't understand what you mean by (but they boost nothing will have} You also said they have an alternative in another LGA I will ask, is the alternative conducive for them? or is it another inconvenient to add on what they are already in. The alternative, does it have good access road, electricity, water, are there lockup shops that will accommodate all the traders that was at the previous market? or will we see a large percentage fell to the crack as it is with any other thing in Nigeria? |

jamjo: Former Governor Amaechi tried relocating them to another place outside the city center, but this same Governor Wike was among those that were giving them backing in 2014 that nothing will happen to them. There was a protest back then that Amaechi is a bad person. He gave them option to choose between Igrwuta and Oyigbo but they refused. Now the same man that they thought was fighting for them has come to buy the land and send them away without making plan to relocate them to a new place. |
