Letmehearword: Cataracts do not come back on the same eye that was operated. however, some times after surgery, some part of the natural eye capsule that was left can become cloudy again, and the symptoms would be similar to that of cataracts and you might think it has returned. Fortunately, It can be treated and the treatment is simpler than the original cataract surgery. It uses a procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy. You can see a consultant opthamologist in your state (you can find them at the FMCs or teaching hospitals) and they would take care of this for you. 1 Like |

God bless you OP. Timely and educative. My mum couldn't see with one of her eyes and she was diagnosed of glaucoma. The ophthalmologist said it's due to cataract and further tests showed that cataract has spread to the other eye though she can see clearly with that. She's diabetic and above 60. The doctor prescribed some drugs, eye drops and said we should come back end of this month for further test and possible prep for surgery. We went to Babcock teaching hospital where someone recommended that has one of the best facilities in Lagos and Ogun state. 1. Will she be operated to treat the glaucoma and remove the cataract from the other eye? *I went through the thread and you mentioned something like optic/artificial lens. 2. Will that be used for my mum if the glaucoma can not be treated? Thanks. |

treasuremi1:Your mums cataract surgery is highly dependent on the control of the glaucoma. The major aim of glaucoma treatment I to prevent tunnel vision or even comlet loss of vision. This is dependent on the time of presentation of the patient and compliance to prescribed treatments. |

Deborah98:Based on some classification system cataracts can be classified as mature or immature but this has nothing to do with the decision to surgically extract it. The individual needs to see an OPHTHALMOLIGIST not an OPTICIAN OR OPTOMETRIST.. |

ayanleye12:It seems they don't really understand. The truth is that most Nigerians have phobia of going under the blade because of the few sad stories the have heard. You need to find a way of passing th message across that you are progressively lossing your vision. I think on your next visit to the hospital the doctor (ophthalmologist) should find a way of showing then the cataract. Maybe it may swing their decision. 1 Like |

LimAnc:The glaucoma is said to be deep and as I said earlier; she can't see with the said eye. She didn't complain before now, but the ophthalmologist said it's been there for about a year. We have since been compliant with the prescribed drugs. We have an appointment on 29th of this month. Just curious if there will be on operation on both eyes for both glaucoma and cataract or only on the other eye that has been infected with only cataract Thanks |
