First go to Oau, then take a bike and say you're going to market, they will ask that where in market are you going, say 'Language place".

Hope this helps

Thanks bro

@Danielhouston

I must really commend your efforts. Giving out this much information and a platform like nairaland isn't an easy task. Although I'm still a broke street boy in Nigeria, your posts have given me more than my money could ever afford.

You should know that you've shaped my life in a way and I'll remain grateful... I'm not a religious man but bro, I believe say by 2026. I'll be in Germany and that's my faith talking...

Once more thank you for lighting my candles

I’m telling, learning German is NOT easy. I have a B1 language certificate and I’m still struggling. A lot of words have the same meaning and many words mean the same thing.

For example: in English we say “the” bag. “The” in German could be “die, den, das, der” and you have to use them appropriately even though they all mean the same thing.

About racism, I’ve been called the N-word but that was mostly online and by 2 Russian guys in a train in Berlin. It was worse in 2015 during the refugee crisis in Europe. People would yell at me through their windows “Go back to Africa”, “Monkey”. But that was in small cities. There are no strong laws in Germany that protects people of color against racism but we’re constantly fighting against it. They recently established an anti-racism unit but I don’t know if it’s functional.

Germany has a very strong privacy law that racists tend to benefit from. You can experience racism and not be able to film the racist or post their picture online. You can only share that information with the police and your lawyer. You also need to have a witness or evidence. Other kinds of racism are institutional and economic. You don’t see them but they affect the way you’re being treated when you need something.

I’ve experienced more racism from Russians, Polish, Arabs and Turks in Germany than I have from Germans. Germany is no where near USA when it comes to racism. USA takes the cake. The thing is, Germans are VERY good at pretending. Even if they don’t like you, they will still be polite to you but you’ll know by the way they treat you. They also care SO MUCH about their reputation because of their history.

Hmmm...this thread is reflective of our problem as a country. Most projects end up abandoned in Nigeria because every interaction, response, or debate is usually based on ego and the ugly urge to proof every other person wrong.

Most Nigerians feel intimidated and relegated when their opinion is not adopted as the standard. It seems they subtly begin to question their own intelligence and experience and try to forcefully and convulsfully announce their presence by attacking who ever they feel has been stealing the shine on any given matter.

This guy (danielhouston) was giving most of us a a leaf of hope, you can imagine the work and sacrifice it takes to churn out informative and entertaining posts on a regular basis. Am very sure he has other important things to commit his time and mental resources too, but he choosed to stand as signboard for others to be properly informed and directed. Yet some people who have never created any meaningful thread in the past will come here to counter another man's personal experience.

If he says "Germans are good", that's what he experienced...maybe he just happened to meet the good ones, that doesn't mean all Germans are absolutely good, we know it's a subjective statement and it's not caste in stone! There must be some or many bad Germans as well, Why derail such a beautiful thread just to stroke and flagellate your tiny yet fragile egoistic peninsula angry angry

Let's keep waiting for him, lovely photos would be returning with him too.

Always resist the urge to shalaye

In real life, it is very important and applicable. Didn't know that, it was applicable in public space using such statement.

Is there any history behind it? Like being used in a movie or where someone prominent used it? Or was it stated by a nairalander before it went viral?
it is a yoruba word that started trending.

It is very common that people have pets in Germany. Some have dogs, some have cats. In Nigeria, I grew up thinking cats are witches and evil. I didn’t imagine anybody would keep a cat in their house as a pet. I was also afraid of dogs. The dogs I saw in Nigeria were stray dogs or dogs that bite. You know the dogs they use for security.

So I arrived Germany and one of my flatmates had a cat. I did not notice this cat, you know how sneaky cats can be. I came out of the bathroom one day and the cat was standing outside the door. I started shouting and ran back inside.
Everybody jumped out of their rooms to see what happened. I told them I saw a cat and they were looking at me as if I was crazy.

I later learned that cats are pets. Some people actually have 3 cats and you can play with them. They treat those cats like their biological children and care for them. It took me time to touch any cat but now I’m used to it. I even help my friend feed her cat when she’s away. But I still don’t like cats.

grin grin grin

Cats are cool to have as pets, prefer them to dogs.

In Germany you have to be careful with body language when communicating with people. That style of handshake or hand movement that is a form of greeting in your home country, can be considered a symbol of hate in Germany.

An example is raising your right hand in the air to greet someone. If you do that, the police will surround you and arrest you on charges of hate. That is a sign of Hitler. Some people don’t know this. They don’t play with anything associated with Hitler. Any handshake, body movement, symbols that was used by Nazis, is totally forbidden and can get you arrested.

You know how some Nigerian guys would raise their right hand up to greet their friends and say “my chairman, I salute you, boss, twale”.... if you try that in Germany you can be arrested for imitating Hitler. Same goes for those personalized handshakes you see as normal. They won’t care if you’re black or white, you will be arrested and charged.

So yeah, it is very important that you educate yourself about this. You can google about the hand movements and handshakes that were used by the Nazis, so you understand what I’m talking about.

Right wing supporters do this all the time in their protests and concerts and don't get arrested.

Yea, I've seen this too during their protest in Mannheim.

I don’t use extensions. I just dread my natural hair and leave it to grow. You can go to work with dreads or braids or whatever hairstyle, nobody cares. Anybody who talks about your hair is discriminating against you. Except it is written in your contract. IT professionals even wear slippers to work. You can have red hair like chicken and earring falling from your tongue, nobody cares. As long as you can do your work.

True.

I appreciate the fact you guys seek info and knowledge but you all seemed to be obessessed with that danielhouston.

On another hand he did a wonderful job but on the other hand what he is doing is encouraging Nigerians and future who could have made a positive change for their motherland leave the country.

You spoke about his command of English i have uncles who went to the US in the 1970s but can still speak Ibo till now.

My sis that has stayed there over 10years speaks Ibo and English fluently so whats the hype he can write English well.

He said there is no black Doc in Germany,my uncle who also left Naija in the 70s,married whites twice is a renowned Surgeon in Germany so know he doesnt know all and he should accept that.

Hope you see the angle am coming from, have in mind his thread was educative and entertaining but everyone is entitled to his or her opinion rightly or wrongly.

Thanks.

I think when he said there are no black Docs in Germany, he meant that if you walk into a hospital, there's a high chance that you will be attended by a non-black Doc which is true in most cases and your Uncle is an exception but the majority or almost all doctors here are non-black.

What is your level ?

There are Study books I can find for you with exercices and audios.

But I wonder why you would want to learn German with a book only. It is possible but it takes great level of motivation and self discipline that only few people can showcase.

Tell me more, and I will see if I can be of help.

This is a falsehood. Children not visiting their parents is an exception not the rule. The average German is very conservative when it comes to family values and has very close family ties. I wonder how people come to the conclusion that Germans are not close to their parents and neglect them. How many such families have you known?

It is impossible to talk about family values as if Germany is one single unified entity. The truth is, it greatly differs from region to region. Germany is not a totally unified entity, you have to know the history of the land to understand how and why there are great cultural discrepancies across areas.

What DanielHouston said is therefore correct to the extent that it applies to some regions. What you are saying is also correct to an extent.

But if Germany is to be considered as a whole, I would be inclined to rather agree with you. Compared to most Central and western Europeans countries, Germans are conservative and family oriented.

But I wonder why such a discussion would even take place here. It is of no use to an average Nigerian trying to immigrate.
