OfoIgbo: Im going to repost what Basden said and I want you to read it with your own eyes. He said Nri is a town, headquarter for a priest cult. This would mean there are several locations one can find these priests but their central gathering is at a town called Nri. Nri is not a dynasty, it is not a kingship, it is simply a town. This does not mean you could not call sevaral places Nri but you are historically inaccurate to say Nri is a King, son of Gad, as most of you are wont to say. You can call all places these priests exist as Nri-someting, or something-Nri, that will agree with what Basden witnessed and recorded. Basden did not record a king of Nri. He did not say Nri was a kingdom. It was a gathering place for priests that coronated kings in Igboland. He is in effect saying there are kings in Igboland but Nri is not one of them, instead Nri is a town, a conclave for priests. He separated kings from priests. 2 Likes

OfoIgbo: Ora Eri is one of the branches the priest cult were found. All places with prefix-Eri, or prefix-Eri, are branches to Nri, their headquarters. The difference between Eri and Nri is dialectal. This Eze nonsense was the creation of Warrant Officers by colonial government. This is where you went wild with turning every title to a kingdom. Obalatule: You have three dynastic kings in Igboland. Asaba, Onitsha and Idu. These three take their ancestral root from Benin. Any other kingdom or Ezeship is either the creation of Igala or that of colonial government. The only land where I can say they have a self- created state rulership is Aro. They are migrants from Congo, a Bantu stock. They settled in Southern Iboland and self-ruled before white colonial govt. Igala colonial invasion did not touch them and they were not influenced by Benin migrants. They were the middlemen that raided and ambushed Northern Igbo for slaves. They cooked and ate some and sold rest off to slave traders. The raiders of those days are the Abams. They were feared all the way to Asaba and Nsukka. Even till today, when Aro people talk you Northern Ibo shiver in your pants. The influence of modernity is what curtailed them and shrunk their power. This is king of Asaba. You can see when he is dressed formally he represents his root in Benin. This is how Obi of Onitsha also dressed in official regalia, as well Idu of Igboukwu. You see when he dressed in red cap as an Iboman its hard to tell he sits on a throne of Benin. 2 Likes

BabaRamota1980: Oraeri is one of the few Igbo towns with an EZE before the coming of the white man. According to Nri accounts, there were already about 60+ Igbo Ezes/Igwes before the coming of the white man. But places like Igbo-Ukwu, Enugwu-Agidi(Nri clan), Enugwu-Ukwu(Nri clan) e.t.c. did not have traditional rulers. It was the colonial government that spread that practice throughout every Igbo town. Just to make a few points clearer, Nri is a clan, the core of which are Enugwu-Ukwu, Enugwu-Agidi, Agukwu and Nawfia. The Eze came from the Agukwu lineage, and the first born lineage is Enugwu-Ukwu. However, some decades ago, Agukwu and two other non-Nri villages of Akamkpisi and Diodo adopted the name Nri (hence Nri town), much to the chagrin of the other core Nri clan towns, and set off a feud that has lingered on till date. That's majorly why a lot of people are not aware of Nri achievements, but once peace sets in, the Nri clan will do the needful to ensure every Igbo man is abreast of what IGBONESS really is, and what Igbos did in the past. Back then, the Eze Nri was the political leader of the 4 core Nri towns, and the spiritual/cultural leader of much of Igboland, Igodomigodo, Benin empire, Igala kingdom and maybe some other far flung non-Igbo territories. Eri was the father of Nri-Menri (the ancestor of the Nris), Agulu (the ancestor of Aguleri), Igbariam e.t.c and his last born male was Onoja (the ancestor of the Igalas who relocated to Idah) There are villages in Nri towns that have Eri in them such as UmuOkpalaEri in Enugwu-Ukwu, IruKpalaEri in Nawfia. So usually places that have Eri attached to the names will normally have Nri ancestry (e.g Oraeri) or other people descended from Eri (e.g AguluEri, UmulEri) 4 Likes |

IDENNAA: Please dont do that. This is not about fight. Igbo is Igbo, you just happen to have id10ts amongst you that insist Nri was an ancient kingdom. It is not. Nri was a town. This is not about competition between one Igbo and another Igbo. This is about fact finding. 2 Likes |

BabaRamota1980: As Basden rightly pointed out, the Nri clan is to the east of Onitsha. The seat of Eze Nri is in Agukwu, and from Onitsha, just a 35 minutes drive gets you to the modern Nri town. I'm sure you know that London is the capital of England. And the monarchs of England mainly stay in London. Also, once one visits Manchester, it can be said the person has visited England. But imagine a situation, where London, then decides to adopt the name England, it will start seeming as though the queen of England is just the queen of London. The confusion will come up because ENgland was originally the name of a country, but later on, one of the cities within England adopted the name. That is exactly what happened with Nri town. There was never an Nri town. There was is always an Nri clan. Before they settled for Nri town, it was initially called Agukwu-Nri. Before Agukwu-Nri, it was known as Agukwu, a few hundreds of years ago. It is just too complicated that it will take me many pages of writing to explain the intricacies, but I hope you get the picture. Now, there was always an Eze Nri. It is today, the oldest royal stool in NIgeria. As I wrote in my previous reply, the Eze Nri was a true king in the Nri clan hundreds of years ago, but was a spiritual and cultural papal figure, in much of Igboland, Igodomigodo, Benin, Igala territories 4 Likes |

OfoIgbo: You are starting to claim lands. All these places you mentioned are within stone throw of one another. They are all collectively the domain of Obi of Onitsha. I already wrote and said there are three ancestral kingdoms in Igboland - Asaba, Onitsha and Idu. I need to go into history and enumerate for you what Onitsha is. Idu is Yoruba word, so is Orisha. Idu is the spot a shrine is built for worship. Orisha is the entity that is worshipped in the Idu. In other words, Idu is the geoposition for a deity worship. The object of the worship is Orisha. Another word Yoruba use for geopositioning of shrine is Oju. There is difference between Idu and Oju. This is not Yoruba thread so I will not go into that detail. Example is popular Ojuelegba in Lagos. The shrine of Elegba. Ibo lexicon does not have the "ts" sound. Why do you have a town in Iboland called Onitsha? The proper spelling is Onisha. The only other place you find Idu, beside Yoruba is Benin. Benin of course is an offshoot of Yoruba. The only place you also find Orisha beside Yoruba is Benin and Ishekiri, who call it Orishe. The town you call Onitsha today is actually an Idu. The migrants from Benin would have had it as Idu something. The settlers met an indigene group on the land. The indigenes corrupted Idu into Onisha. Onisha caught on and remained so till today. Anywhere in your land you have Isele, Idu, Onisha, are migrants from Benin. All those places remain the domains of King of Onitsha and King of Idu in Igboukwu. All other kingdoms that if you scream in one they hear you in next kingdom are all superflous and modern day creation. When your invaders and colonial masters arrived they installed authentic kingdoms to rule you - from Asaba, Onitsha and Idu. Igbo has no King. 2 Likes |

BabaRamota1980: You make me laugh. So "ts" is now the anchor of your point There is ACHALA town in Anambra, which one can as well spell as ATSALA. I even have ACHALA village within my town. So that puts paid to this your line of argument. Up until the 1960s, it was Nri priests that officiated in the coronation of any Obi of Onitsha. Nowadays, the process is carried out by an Onitsha person whose mother must hail from Nri. Northcote W. Thomas (1910-1913), the government anthropologist published his work in 1913. In his book Anthropological Report on the Igbo Speaking Peoples of Nigeria, Part I, he wrote: "The Eze Nri, or King of Nri town otherwise known as Aguku, is a somewhat striking figure… He is the spiritual potentate over a large extent of the Ibo country, and so great is the awe which he inspires that recently, when, probably for the first time in history, an Eze Nri entered the native court of Awka while a sitting was going on, the whole assembly rose and prepared to flee.” So as you can see, Kings have always existed in Nri 4 Likes |

OfoIgbo: In 1900, according to eye witness who lived among Ibos, you had no king in Nri. In 1913, according to writer who did not live among Ibo, you had a king in Nri. Think about that for a moment. Then call it Onicha, instead of Onitsha. Dont focus on that. Stay on the Nri. I gave that stretch to highlight the ancestral lineage of authentic kings in Igboland. Your Nri kings are not ancestral, they are creations necessitated by colonial govt. 2 Likes |

OfoIgbo: So Nri is a clan? That goes to prove what Basden said. A clan of priests with headquarters in Nri, a small town. If Nri had a king Basden would have pointed it out. Basden pointed out there were kings in Agbor, in Asaba and Onitsha. He lived in Onitsha but travelled around Igboland. If he saw and wrote about the king of Agbor, who he specifically said was a descent of Benin, how could he miss out on a king nearby in Nri? He even travelled to Arochukwu. So how could he not know if a king was in Nri? 2 Likes |

BabaRamota1980: Did Basden write that there was NO king in NRI?. The king that was on the throne when Basden was there was Eze NRI Obalike, who reigned from the late 1800s to 1936. Before him, was Eze NRI Enwelana I. Eze Nris are seen as priest-kings. Because they are/were kings in a few territories and high priests in others. Their kingdom is a subset of their priestdom. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

OfoIgbo: All dynastic kings were king-priests. In Yorubaland we call Oba a deputy of Orisha. Whiteman gave you Warrant Officer class II chiefs to rule you. When each region sent traditional rulers to represent it in parliament your WOII Officers were seated with dynastic kings from Yorubaland. You thus copied the ways and protocols of kings. Now you have converted all these WOII chiefs to Kings. Every clan in Iboland now has a Eze. Your Ezeship are purchased and selected by election, not hereditary. 1 Like |
Re: How To Unveil And Promote Ancient Igbo Civilisation by OfoIgbo: 9:24am On Aug 25, 2020 |
BabaRamota1980: Some ancient Igbo monarchies are fully hereditary. e.g Nnewi Some are partially hereditary e.g Nri, in the sense that out of the 4 core Nri lineages, the Agukwu lineage provides the Eze Nris. Within Agukwu, there are a few families that then provide the Eze Nris. The Eze Nri stool of Oraeri predates the Igala, Ife, Benin stools by many centuries. Oraeri stool is probably as ancient as Igodomigodo The Eze Nri in Agukwu predates them all. Even the Portuguese explorers and historians of the 1400s authenticated that point, when they mentioned the priest-king to the East of Benin, who to all intents and purposes, was culturally, spiritually and somewhat politically in charge of Benin. OfoIgbo: That question was to test you by the way. Nnewi is in same class with Enugu, a colonial creation. Find for me any mention of Nnewi in history prior to 1900. It is fraud to come here and talk about an ancient dynasty in Nnewi. This is all your history is made of, fraud kingdoms created for the convenience of whitrman to administer province. You converted warrant chiefs to kings and started associating a non-existent ancestry to them . There are four recognized kingship in entire igboland and only one of them is self-created by Aro, who thrmselves are not indigenes, they migrated from Congo. The rest three are Benin origin - Asaba, Onitsha, Idu. Chiefdoms were created by Igala. The priests of Nri were Igala. Stop your nonsense o. Dont vex me o. 3 Likes |

OfoIgbo: There are three clan lineages in Iboland - Wawa, which is West Iboland. Awkunana - which is North Iboland. Ngwa - which is Central and South Iboland. Awkunana is old province colonized by Igala before white colonialism. Wawa was colonized by Benin first, followed by Igala colonization. Then whiteman colonization. Benin influence is visible in the rulership and kingship but not in the society and its culture. Igala on the other hand did not install kings but installed priests and built shrines. Red cap were strictly a garment of priesthood. Now it has become an article of fashion worn by everyone. Ngwa was an independent state. Never colonized by Benin or Igala. In fact, Ngwa (Aro) colonized interior Iboland and sold you off to Ijaw who earned profit at the coast. Aro was not a people of sea. They stayed inland and onlybtraded with sea coast people. If they were a sea people like Ijaw, like Itshekiri, like Ijebu, like Awori, they would have been the overlods on the coast and thus Ibo would by now have coast. Slaves sold by Aro to Ijaw, their descendants are still there. These are Bonny Ibo. I really dont have time to be going back and forth like this with a freakish omoibo. Stop saying shit. If you dont know your background get lost. You will make me loose my cool. Do you think i have time to waste talking shit? I dont have time for your nonsensical Nri. Watch yoself. BabaRamota1980:Listen very well, Arọ was never from Congo or whatever, Arọ Chukwu was founded by the descendants of Oké Nnachi and Eze Agwụ coupled with the remnants Ibibio after the Arọ - Ibibio war. As for kings, Igbo enwe Eze simply means that the Igbos as a whole never had a single representative in the name of King, most Igbo clans practice what you will call Republican way of rule through "ụmụ Nna" (which is more advanced than kingship and kingdoms). But few Igbo clans have kings, an example is in Ana Edo clan where one of the towns in it known as Nnewi were being led by the Obi of Otolo, who will go by the title "the Igwe of Nnewi". It is important to note that both Obi and Igwe are titles in Igboland, Obi means the leader of a clan while Igwe is the fourth stage of ọzọ title in ancient Nri which was previously reserved for the Eze nri. The full name of the title is "Igwekala". So my brother from the yoruba side. Don't vomit lies about the Igbos based on the assumption that Igbos are not interested in history. There are many Igbos that knows all these things I said here but choose not to argue with ignorant people. 3 Likes |
