He signed his first pro contract with Nice in 2016. He just rejected new contract last year.

I'm just thinking, if Nice values him that much, they would have started trying to tie him down long term maybe in the second year of his initial contract. Why does the club wait till the final year to start negotiating for a new contract?

I don't know the full detail but I don't think Nice tried that hard to keep him.

And a player this young this young to run down his contract to become a free agent, for me, puts a question mark on his and/or his agent behaviour.

Take it from me , Ben chilwell weekly wage can't be more than 120k while Kai Havertz wage would be around 120-150k like someone said. The reason why Kepa wages spiralled from 80k @ athletico Bilbao to £150k is because of his 7years lengthy contract.
I assume Chelsea board felt he could mature to one of the very best in future and he won't put them in the situation Thibaut boxed them in.
Timo Werner 5years contract puts him at £170k and that's the highest Chelsea are paying.
