THE WORDS OF LADY LUGARD, Historian wife of Lord Lugard, Ist British Governor-General of Nigeria:

"When the history of Negroland comes to be written in detail, it may be found that the kingdoms lying towards the eastern end of Sudan (classical home of Ancient Africans) were the home of races who inspired, rather than of races who received, the tradition of civilization associated for us with the name of ancient Egypt.

For they cover on either side of the Upper Nile between the latitudes of ten degrees and seventeen degrees, territories in which are found monuments more ancient than the oldest Egyptian monuments. If this should prove to be the case and civilized world be forced to recognize in a black people the fount of its original enlightenment, it may happen that we shall have to revise entirely our view of the black races, and regard those who now exist as the decadent representatives of an almost forgotten era, rather than as the embryonic possibility of an era yet to come."

"The fame of the ancient Ethiopians (ancient Kushites) was widespread in ancient history. Herodotus described them as the most beautiful and long-lived of the human races, and before Herodotus, Homer, in even more flattering language, described them as the most just of men, the favourites of the gods. The annals of all the great early nations of Asia Minor are full of them. The Mosaic records allude to them frequently; but while they are described as the most powerful, the most just, and the most beautiful of the human race, they are constantly spoken of as Black, and there seems to be no other conclusion to be drawn than at that remote period of history, the leading race of the Western World was a Black race."

Lady Lugard/Flora Shaw Lugard, Asa G. Hilliard, III, A Tropical Dependency: An Outline of the Ancient History of the Western Sudan With an Account of the Modern Settlement of Northern Nigeria, (1900)

When Europe was a wasteland of barbarism and cave-dwelling illiteracy, Sudan (ancient Nubia) was giving the world mighty temples and pyramids built according to the highest mathematical and geometric principles and standards.

Incidentally I was watching an American TV news show the other day in which the host, Joe Scarborough, was telling his viewers that ''Arabs invented mathematics''.

A claim profoundly false and misleading, since the pyramids of Sudan - all 223 of them, were built thousands of years before the birth of Muhammed, the founder of Islam.

(Egypt's pyramids and temples of course are another example of ancient black African mathematics that preceded by thousands of years all European and Arab civilizations, but this thread is about Sudan)

Excerpt:

''Nubian pyramids are pyramids that were built by the rulers of the ancient Kushite kingdoms. The area of the Nile valley known as Nubia, which lies [in] present day Sudan, was home to three Kushite kingdoms during antiquity. The first had its capital at Kerma (2500–1500 BC). The second was centered on Napata (1000–300 BC). Finally, the last kingdom was centered on Meroë (300 BC–AD 300). They are built of granite and sandstone. The pyramids were partially demolished by [surprise surprise] Italian combat medic turned explorer and treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini in the 1830s''

Beautiful Africa.

Small America that was a colony few years ago is now among world powers, then the whites brought their little sense of identity to rid us of our very own supreme identity.

Egypt.... Of the great Pharaohs.

Even the Benin Kingdom of Africa was a well laid out civilization in its prime.

Then came western influences which took away our "Africanness" tapped into our greed, and made us lose our path.

This is for all those Nigerians who think whites are solely responsible for all progress on Earth.

Here, your white colonial madam is saying to you, ''Actually, YOU civilized us and the rest of the world.

...Just that you've forgotten''.

Thank you very much. About Benin City, here is what the UK Guardian Newspaper wrote:

''With its mathematical layout and earthworks longer than the Great Wall of China, Benin City was one of the best planned cities in the world when London was a place of ‘thievery and murder’. ..

Benin City was described as ‘wealthy and industrious, well-governed and richly decorated’. ... The Benin empire was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in west Africa, dating back to the 11th century.

The Guinness Book of Records (1974 edition) described the walls of Benin City and its surrounding kingdom as the world’s largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era. According to estimates by the New Scientist’s Fred Pearce, Benin City’s walls were at one point “four times longer than the Great Wall of China, and consumed a hundred times more material than the Great Pyramid of Cheops”.

Benin City, 14th Century

Situated on a plain, Benin City was enclosed by massive walls in the south and deep ditches in the north. Beyond the city walls, numerous further walls were erected that separated the surroundings of the capital into around 500 distinct villages.

Pearce writes that these walls “extended for some 16,000 km in all, in a mosaic of more than 500 interconnected settlement boundaries. They covered 6,500 sq km and were all dug by the Edo people … They took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct, and are perhaps the largest single archaeological phenomenon on the planet”.

Benin City’s walls were at one point “four times longer than the Great Wall of China, and consumed a hundred times more material than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt”.

Benin City was also one of the first cities to have a semblance of street lighting. Huge metal lamps, many feet high, were built and placed around the city, especially near the king’s palace. Fuelled by palm oil, their burning wicks were lit at night to provide illumination for traffic to and from the palace.

When the Portuguese first “discovered” the city in 1485, they were stunned to find this vast kingdom made of hundreds of interlocked cities and villages in the middle of the African jungle. They called it the “Great City of Benin”, at a time when there were hardly any other places in Africa the Europeans acknowledged as a city. Indeed, they classified Benin City as one of the most beautiful and best planned cities in the world.

n 1691, the Portuguese ship captain Lourenco Pinto observed: “Great Benin, where the king resides, is larger than Lisbon; all the streets run straight and as far as the eye can see. The houses are large, especially that of the king, which is richly decorated and has fine columns. The city is wealthy and industrious. It is so well governed that theft is unknown and the people live in such security that they have no doors to their houses.”

In contrast, London at the same time is described by Bruce Holsinger, professor of English at the University of Virginia, as being a city of “thievery, prostitution, murder, bribery and a thriving black market made the medieval city ripe for exploitation by those with a skill for the quick blade or picking a pocket”.

At the height of its greatness in the 12th century – well before the start of the European Renaissance – the kings and nobles of Benin City patronised craftsmen and lavished them with gifts and wealth, in return for their depiction of the kings’ and dignitaries’ great exploits in intricate bronze sculptures.

''These works from Benin are equal to the very finest examples of European casting technique,” wrote Professor Felix von Luschan, formerly of the Berlin Ethnological Museum. “Benvenuto Celini could not have cast them better, nor could anyone else before or after him. Technically, these bronzes represent the very highest possible achievement.”

Ruins of Ancient Zimbabwe

When colonialist whites first 'discovered' this city of massive stone buildings dated several thousands of years old, they said that it couldn't possibly have been the work of Africans.

Only after a few years of intensive research did they finally admit that it was indeed the work of ancient black African Zimbabweans.

Bro, African history is extremely vast. One thread like this cannot teach you everything. All we can do is offer some snippets into our past. It will then be left to you to explore further.

A few more snippets:

In the ancient Greek world, Africans were regarded as almost DIVINE people.

They called all Africa south of Egypt, 'Ethiopia'.

They called the people who lived there ''the blameless Ethiopians''.

Excerpts:

Ptolemy the geographer and other ancient Greek commentators believed that the “Aethiopian Olympus” was where the gods lived when they were not in Greece.

Strabo (Greek historian, geographer and philosopher, 64BC – 24AD) stated that some previous authors had considered Aethiopia’s northern border to begin at Mount Amanus, thus including all of Syria, Israel and Arabia. [These areas were once BLACK regions, which is why we know the ancient Israelites were black people. (Amos 9:7 ''Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the Lord.'')]

The Greeks and the subsequent Romans had a healthy respect for the intelligence of Africans and respected them especially for their piety. Lucian mentions a thoughtful Negro scribe from Memphis named Pancrates. Aesop, of the Aesop’s tales was described as an Aethiopian.

Diodorus wrote that the Aethiopians were like the gods and without fault; Claudius Aelianus (Roman Author c 175AD – c235 AD) believed that the gods bathed in Aethiopia and Stobaeus (c 5th century AD) recorded that the Aethiopians do not need doors on their homes and do not steal the possessions that their neighbours leave in the street. Of no other part of the world is there a constant reference to such general honesty and lack of crime. (see the echo of this 2,000 years later in Ibn Battuta’s writing on Mali)

In the ancient Greek Romance Aethiopica by Heliodorus of Emesa (Greek writer, c 3rd century AD), an Aethiopian King was a model of wisdom, righteousness, and magnanimity:

“The king does not condemn people to death, and sends out messengers to tell his military troops not to slaughter the enemy, but to let them live when they have been defeated. The king proclaimed, “A noble thing it is to surpass an enemy in battle when he is standing, but in generosity when he has fallen.”

Lactantius Placidus (c 35AD) in a work attributed to him wrote:

“For the Aethiopians are said to be the justest men and for that reason the gods leave their abode frequently to visit them.”

THE TESTIMONY OF DIODORUS OF SICILY ON ANCIENT BLACK EGYPT

Diodorus of Sicily, the great ancient Greek explorer decided in 60BC to travel to the lands south of Egypt, to learn more about ''the blameless Ethiopians''.

Diodorus was the author of the famous book Bibliotheka Historica in which he recorded his travels to inner Africa. He wrote:

"They (the Ethiopians) say also that the Egyptians are colonists sent out by the Ethiopians, Osiris ["King of Kings and God of Gods] having been the leader of the colony . . . they add that the Egyptians have received from them, as from authors and their ancestors, the greater part of their laws."

A Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt.

Much of Book 3 of the Bibliotheka Historica is devoted to the intertwined histories of Dionysus and the god-favored Ethiopians whom he believed to be the originators of Egyptian civilization. [emphasis added]

(1st century B.C., Diodorus Siculus of Sicily, Greek historian and contemporary of Caesar Augustus, Universal History Book III. 2. 4-3. 3)

Diodorus devoted an entire chapter of his world history, the Bibliotheke Historica, or Library of History (Book 3), to the Kushites ["Aithiopians"] of Meroe. Here he repeats the story of their great piety, their high favor with the gods, and adds the fascinating legend that they were the first of all men created by the gods and were the founders of Egyptian civilization, invented writing, and had given the Egyptians their religion and culture. (3.3.2).

"Now they relate that of all people the Aithiopians [Ethiopians] were the earliest, and say that the proofs of this are clear. That they did not arrive as immigrants but are the natives of the country and therefore rightly are called authochthonous is almost universally accepted. That those who live in the South are likely to be the first engendered by the earth is obvious to all. For as it was the heat of the sun that dried up the earth while it was still moist, at the time when everything came into being, and caused life, they say it is probable that it was the region closest to the sun that first bore animate beings".

Diodorus continues:

"They further write that it was among them that people were first taught to honor the gods and offer sacrifices and arrange processions and festivals and perform other things by which people honor the divine. For this reason their piety is famous among all men, and the sacrifices among the Aithiopians are believed to be particularly pleasing to the divinity,"

"The Aithiopians say that the Egyptians are settlers from among themselves and that Osiris was the leader of the settlement. The customs of the Egyptians, they say, are for the most part Aithiopian, the settlers having preserved their old traditions. For to consider the kings gods, to pay great attention to funeral rites, and many other things, are Aithiopian practices, and also the style of their statues and the form of their writing are Aithiopian. Also the way the priestly colleges are organized is said to be the same in both nations. For all who have to do with the cult of the gods, they maintain, are [ritually] pure: the priests are shaved in the same way, they have the same robes and the type of scepter shaped like a plough, which also the kings have, who use tall pointed felt hats ending in a knob, with the snakes that they call the asp (aspis) coiled round them."

"There are also numerous other Aithiopian tribes [i.e. besides those centered at Meroe]; some live along both sides of the river Nile and on the islands in the river, others dwell in the regions that border on Arabia [i.e. to the east], others again have settled in the interior of Libya [i.e. to the west]. The majority of these tribes, in particular those who live along the river, have black skin, snub-nosed faces, and curly hair".

The GHANA Empire (7th to 13th Century)

Ruins of Kumbi Saleh, capital of the Ghana Empire

This African king ruled over a democratic nation centuries before Abraham Lincoln

Many years before the colonial invasion of Africa, there existed one of the most powerful kingdoms between what is now modern-day Mauritania and Mali, located at the south of the Sahara Desert and northwest of the Senegal and Niger Rivers.

The Ghana Kingdom that existed between 830-1235AD remains one of the strongest ever and richest African kingdoms with a rich culture. It is often mistaken for modern-day Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast.

Before thriving as a successful kingdom, the kings and leaders of Ghana were authoritarians and very particular about taxes. They gained more power by intelligent exploitation and trade passing. The kings also acted as the leaders of the traditional cult. They were served by subjects and priests who were practically made to worship them.

Known as “the king of the people” or “the people’s king”, King Tenkamenin who ruled the kingdom around the 9th century is considered as one of the greatest African kings. During his reign, the kingdom flourished and became very wealthy reaching its peak in economic wealth and power.

Tenkamenin structured his leadership so well and was able to manage time and resources. He was very particular about taxes and made it a point to collect taxes which would be used to benefit the people of his kingdom.

Before his leadership, there was a growing tension between the traditionalists and Muslims on the land. Through reaching out to the people and sometimes joining his Muslim servers for prayers, Tenkamenin was successful at getting rid of the tension that existed.

It is said that Tenkamenin at a point in his leadership lived in the middle of the kingdom in between the Muslim and traditional towns to enhance equality and peace.

Tenkamenin was very concerned about the social well-being of his people. Breaking the rules of divinity and higher worship of a ruler, he worked with his messengers. Every day, Tenkamenin made it a point to ride on a horse and speak with the people in the town.

He would spend long hours addressing their issues. He sent out his servants to seek the opinion of his people on issues that affected the kingdom before making decisions. He also allowed that the people remained in his presence when they came to him with their issues and made it a point that they stayed until there was some form of resolution.

King Tenkamenin said no one should be denied an audience. His reign was very short but is considered as one of the best-structured monarchies. He lived till 1075.

Donkey.

History does not work according to YOUR timeline and dictates. Nations and continents rise and fall, and rise again. That is HISTORY. Europe experienced its Dark Ages for nearly 1000 years between 7 ad and the 1400s when Africa was a place of learning and development, and was lifted up with the help of the black African Moors, bringing her into her Renaissance which led on the Industrial Revolution. Africa and Asia today are growing faster than Europe economically, signalling another shift. THAT IS HISTORY. THAT IS HOW IT WORKS. No region is on top permanently and no region is at the 'bottom' permanently either, so WAKE UP and get rid of your inferiority complex and low self esteem.
