I have never heard of anyone dying from menstrual cramps but I have a friend who used to faint sometimes. This is an extreme exception and most ladies do NOT faint. Personally, I need one or two pain killers on the first day of my period. For some ladies a hot-water-bottle is enough. Some ladies do not feel any pain at all.

Let me start by telling you that this method of birth control is very risky for various reasons. First, if a woman's cycle is irregular, chances are low she can tell when she is ovulating. Secondly, the cycle can last between 21-36 days. Depending on how long or short the cycle is, the ovulation period begins and ends at different times. Third, the sperm can survive inside a woman for several days. So if you come inside a woman and she is ovulating in three or four days, your sperm will be lurking inside waiting to fertilize her.

Generally speaking the days before and during the period are rather safe but I would always recommend you use condoms. And always get yourself and your partner tested for STI before you decide to sleep without condoms.

If your partner can tell when she is ovulating, she can additionally track her cycle by taking her temperature every morning but I would not recommend it to avoid pregnancies but to increase the chances of getting pregnant though it's possible to use it either way.

Here's a simple way to calculate your ovulation (unsafe) period for 30 days cycle.
1. From the first day you see the blood of your period.
2. Pick up a calendar and count 15 days including the first day of the blood stain.
3. Mark the 15th day with a pen.
4. Mark 3 days before the 15th day, and mark 3 days after the 15th day.
6. You will notice you have 7 days marked.
These 7 days are your ovulation/fertile days also known as unsafe period.
