Igbos Won't Die If We Don't Get Presidency In 2023 - Victor Umeh by nairavsdollars(f): 3:07pm On Aug 31, 2020
Former national chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Senator Victor Umeh said for the sake of unity of Nigeria, the South East should produce the president of Nigeria come 2023.

He pointed that the zone should not be denied the opportunity on historical basis regarding the Nigerian civil war.

Umeh told reporters at the reopening of the Enugu airport that all the zones in the South have produced leadership of the country except the South East.

He said: “It is wrong for the other parts of the country that have provided leadership to vie for it now. For example the South-West had Obasanjo who served 8 years. Their son is also Vice President now. The South-South have produced the president through Jonathan.
“South East is the remaining part of Southern Nigeria yet to take its slot. So on that basis we thank the president for the work he had done on the Enugu Airport and other infrastructures in the South East – roads and second Niger Bridge. But none is more important than closing the gap by making the South East produce the best president for Nigeria in 2023. Let’s not play politics with that.
“Somebody had told me that the APC is weak in the South-East. And I asked the person what was the strength of the PDP in South-West in 1999 when Obasanjo became the president. The PDP had no councilor in the whole of Southwest. Alliance for Democracy had everything in the Southwest. But due to the exigency to accommodate the Southwest in the presidency, Obasanjo was elected even though he lost in his polling unit in his local government.”

He posited that the situation in the Southeast now is better than then in the Southwest.

He said: “How much more now that the APC is controlling a state in the Southeast, in Imo. And they have others elected as senators and House of Representative members. That argument is no longer tenable.

“They need to make it a policy that the Southeast should provide the leadership of Nigeria in 2023. It is not that we will die if don’t produce the president of Nigeria in 2023. But it is for the country to be truly united. What goes around should come around.

“And we have intellectuals, technocrats and the best people that can provide quality leadership to Nigeria if given the opportunity. So all parts of Nigeria should support the Southeast to produce the president in 2023. Across all the political parties, let there be no contest. The way they did in 1999 where Alliance for Democracy and APP produced Olu Falae and PDP produced Obasanjo. You can see that in 1999 the Southwest were the only people that contested for the presidency in Nigeria. So this is not a new thing. It’s been there. We have antecedents.

“The Southeast has capable people in abundance to lead Nigeria. The need to concede the presidency to the Southeast unassailable at this point and when you are looking for such a material, we have them in abundance.”

Every interested candidate should head to the polls

No one is conceding to anyone.

Do your manifesto and convince people of why they should vote for you irrespective of your ethnicity.

Oh I forgot, this is Nigeria.

It doesn't work that way.

I hope we get it right someday.

This beggy beggy by igbo elite and politicians must stop. Igbos are fond of accusing other tribes of not being as competitive as them. Yet, we are seeing igbo leaders begging upandan to be given the Presidency on a platter/given a free pass.

Even in the entire SE PDP there seems not to be one single igbo politician with enough guts to even hint at throwing his hat in the ring at this point. Even if na to pretend sef. It's like the politicians have already resigned to support another Northerner without even putting up a fight in the same PDP (these are the same people that shout upandan, calling others 'cowards' for not committing political kamakazee, or for not fighting 'Godfatherism').

And I find that very strange because even abroad igbos run for office, yet they seem so afraid of competing against the likes of Atiku and Tambuwal under the same PDP they are the biggest loyalists and promoters of. Abi na so dem fear Fulani reach?? Where is that igbo fighting spirit that they make noise and thump their chest about all over cyberspace It is indeed very strange.

Ndigbo what is happening??

I think Igbo should have been resilient in there struggle for Biafra

It is contingent for an Igbo man to win Presidential election in 2023, it is like a mission impossible.

If they had insisted on "Biafra and nothing else" perhaps we would know that they really ready for a show down

Fighting for Presidency is a fruitless endeavor for Igbos at least for now, had it been Igbos didn't show interest in Presidency and only want Biafra they would have been taking seriously.

Maybe when our politicians are done deceiving themselves thinking they can get 2023 presidency, their brains would click. Maybe then they would realize that we've been condemned to a spectators role in the Nigerian project. Perhaps at that point, they'll face Biafra squarely.

There's nothing like beggy beggy here. You may recall that in 1999 Ogbonnaya Onu won the primaries for ANPP but they asked him to give way to Olu Falae, also in PDP Ekwueme was in a better position than Obasanjo but they have to give it to him to compensate southwest for the 1993 issue. So it is not out of place to do same for the igbos.

As if Ekwueme didn't contest and lose the primary by a decent margin.

Incase you don't know, please check the results of the 1999 PDP primary election results below

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO 1,658 which was 67.98%

ALEX EKWUEME 521 which was 21.36%

DON ETIEBET 106 which was 4.35%

GRAHAM DOUGLAS 71which was 2.91%

JIM NWOBODO 59 which was 2.42%

PHILIP ASIODU 12 which was 0.49%

FRANCIS ELLAH 12 which was 0.49%

Out of the list, only Obansanjo was Yoruba and he got the support of Hausas and Yorubas. Igbos splited their votes.

APP was a Northern and South west alliance like APC of today

Hence, the West got the presidential candidate while North got Vice presidential candidate.

Of course he did but the choice of Obasanjo was not by merit. As long as as PDP was concerned, Obasanjo didn't have such influence but he was engraced by the anonymous arrangement

No he won because he was a boy boy

Obasanjo an Ex military head of state had no influence in PDP?

In case you are too Young or not born then, North trusted Obansajo more than any of the candidates to return power back to them just like he did as a military head of state.
