Nigeria of today is WHO YOU KNOW. not WHAT YOU KNOW.if u have d connection good.i studied economics in OAU ,it was much later I realized the so call social sciences faculty is not socially important any longer.the truth is bitter.now if u must study in university ,the best is to go for courses that can guarantee you independent.most especially information technology course.that is the reality in Nigeria

Work extremely hard. I wrote in some thread before, the steps I took to make a 1st Class.
Make a 1st Class. Engage in writing publications and articles during your 1st degree.
Go for a Masters. I'm certainly sure you will get a scholarship.
Write and publish during your Masters.
You will earn a PhD scholarship with that.

Then come back to this thread and write your experience.

Whatever you do make sure you get a very good grade at least a second class upper degree.
Where you'll work may not relate to your field of study.
Thanks

Most companies that recruit on merit (PwC, KPMG, EY, Deloitte etc, plus banks and consulting firms, only ask for 2:1 in any course.

Sociology is a good course and always proud of being a sociologist. But this Nigeria our country did not require your field to secure you a related job except for those who study engineering. Anywhere you found your self give glory to your God and wish yourself all d best.

WELL AM A GRADUATE OF SOCIOLOGY, U NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF SOCIOLOGY FIRST, IF U DO U MAY NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT NEXT AFTER GRADUATION. IT MAKES U TO UNDERSTAND LIFE BETTER. WHEN I LEFT SCHOOL 2013 I WENT FOR MY SERVICE IN 2014 I GOT A JOB IN AN IT FIRM WHICH I DID FOR ONE YEAR BEFORE MOVING TO THE BANK, WHICH AFTER 3 YEARS I MOVED TO ANOTHER BANK AND I CAN TELL U I AM DOING VERY WELL. WITH THE UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIOLOGY I MASTERED HUMAN BEHAVIOUR WHICH I APPLY TO THE OFFICE POLITICS WHICH HAS EARNED ME SOME ADVANTAGE IN BANKING.

MY DEAR AS A GRADUATE OF SOCIOLOGY U WILL EVENTUALLY EXCEL IN ANY CAREER U FIND URSELF

Nice i wanted to go for masters when i graduate with my saved earnings and go back as a lecturer
Dont know if its waste of money
Also have it in mind to travel to s.a or do the masters
Am confused

If you are not inclined towards academics, dont go. Lecturers are paid peanuts as salary in this country ooo. Be wise, so many lecturers leave thier jobs every day ooo in naija

It doesn't matter, a medical Doctor can work in a bank in Nigeria.

Okay, this is so discouraging especially cos I'm doing a combo of Pol Sci/Pub Admin.

Thanks for the reality check.
You may need this Minus the sleeping with a lecturer part. grin Here's a quote by someone stating all you can do with a political science certificate.
helium2:
Good question,

Please be informed that you can do much more with a 2:1 degree than a 2.2 degree.

Sleep with your lecturers if you have to.

Your head will thank you for it.

The only thing you cant do a POS degree is anything that requires specialized knowledge eg Engineering, Medicine.

All other job are at your call and beckon.

You want to be an finance person, do ICAN during service year.

You want a banking job, go for it.

You want an administrative job, knock yourself out.

You want to be public relations, by all means be my guest.

You want an academic career, you know what to do

You want to own your business, you can

You want to be political analyst on an online blog or newspaper, blow them away please.

You want to work in one of the very many campaign organization that require young vibrant voices, enjoy yourself

I think this is enough for today ..

For me, it is hard to see any field of study that doest fit to the Nigeria society. Just be imaginative and stop associating industries with fields. There botanists in banks and psychologist in petroleum industry.
