Agreed, some of the comments maybe discouraging but it is the harsh truth! There's no need to sugar coat it.
This is not to scare anybody but to help prepare for the reality ahead.

I still wish I was well primed for life after university. Instead I was told to just study hard, get a good grade and a good job is assured.
The reality shock I got after school almost sent me into depression. Apart from the north(except Abuja), there's no part of this country I didn't travel to in search of a job. I have slept in a motor park in the quest for a job.
I am grateful to God that life is better for me today but I always tell whoever cares to listen the truth as it concerns education and jobs in this country.

My advice:
Whatever it is that you are studying, by the side, learn how to generate income on your own, learn how to increase 1kobo to 2kobos.
Ask yourself if I don't get a job with this certificate, how do I intend to survive. Answer that question and you are good to go.

Don't let anybody deter you. No course is useless. It's what you make of it that matters, though some may appear more lucrative than others. I like your thinking already as you have Postgraduate studies in mind. Just work hard and graduate with a good enough grade, 1st Class or 2:1. You stand a chance of scholarships for Postgraduate studies in developed countries (you could even be given a direct PhD scholarship and not just Master's). There are very good areas like Medical Sociology you can specialize in. There's a popular twitter influencer, Dr. Ann Amuta who lectures in a University in the US where she specializes in Medical Sociology (Public Health behaviour). She did her first degree in Sociology in Nigeria. It's a budding and interesting area. You could also consider Criminology as a specialization. That way you stand a very big chance of making into top security agencies like the CIA, FBI and even our own local security outfits here like that DSS, NIA, EFCC, ICPC etc. There are numerous opportunities you can explore. I wish you the best.

Not my strength, not any so-called intellect.
It was only through the help of God.

My point is that, while there are certainly courses that looks like worthless in the Nigerian environment, hardwork on that course— earning a 1st or High 2.1— with attendant skills will make you rise to a position that would seem to flatter you.
I’ve met many Nigerian graduates who are unable to string a simple paragraph in a critical essay. Or enable to understand the simple issues of macroeconomics, geopolitics or even climate change/sustainability. That is mediocre and even if you have an excellent result, you are likely to remain in a mediocre market.

You have made your right choice by following your instincts. Do not let the negatives in this thread be your narrative. To succeed is a personal choice/race. Start each day by telling yourself what you want and see it happening.

A first degree most times just tell that you can be trained as such, you can pick up roles in many industries of your choice.

Most importantly, while in school, focus on your studies and build yourself as well. Get the necessary exposure by joining socioacademic groups like AIISEC. Create a LinkedIn account and make the right connections and follow up with them. Do not make the mistake of requesting monetary favors rather ask for mentorship. Try to organize a meeting with one mentor monthly just to learn what they did that made them successful.

Above all, may the odds be in your favor.

Just ensure you graduate with first-class or second class upper

Also, while in school, keep practicing maths and upgrade your English comprehension skills so you can ace your aptitude tests/interviews when the time comes.

Practice different personality tests online and improve your confidence by participating in public speaking events. Also, learn a foreign language, one of the UN languages.

Lastly, learn a skill like writing, data science, web design, and most importantly, marketing skills.

If you can stay focus and do all the things I've mentioned, you'll come back to show appreciation.

Sociology and social work are very different careers with different educational pathways. While both draw on a similar body of knowledge, sociology generally focuses on research and study while social workers are more directly involved with applying knowledge about society to assisting individuals and families.

Sociology is not social work. The only way to qualify as a social worker is to go for Masters in social work.

I am in academics, not in your field though. Getting there is very difficult. Its like getting a federal government job slot. And more difficult because lecturers are paid better than civil servants of the same level. I hope that you are on at least, 2:1? You need to realise that everyone in pub admin, sociology, pol science etc wants to lecture. And 90% of you are on 2:2. Competition is crazy. Don't sit there and think that lecturing is an easy way out. It will end in tears oo.
My advice to you is to learn a skill. I am also into farming among other things. Even if na mechanic it is better. Many people were sacked when lockdown started but plumbers and electricians were still going about their business fixing TVs and blocked toilets. We Nigerians like going to school like water because it is cheap. Many people here who are giving you hope will not tell you how much they paid to get the slot. Some of them are from influential families. Some are even on first class, but they're here giving you hope and you too you're happy.

Here are some notes for 2:2 grads

1. Some companies don’t care about grade (though few)
2. Some companies lower the threshold to 2:2

To be frank with you there is no good course that will guarantee you employment in Nigeria although you have a slight advantage if you study certain courses.

That being said, if your target is employment in Nigeria then I will tell you to get the best grade available in whatever course you are doing e.g a First Class or at worst a high 2:1. That's not all, alongside while in school make sure you get yourself prepared for aptitude tests (the 3 to 4 years you are spending in the university is enough for you to ace any aptitude test) and as long as your age is not up to 28 to 30 when you are graduating believe me you MUST get job in this same Nigeria. I have young graduates that are getting 2 to 3 offer letters at the same time without knowing anybody.

That aptitude test is a must, there are many 2:1s out there and even first class, the work you do on yourself in terms of aptitude tests and other interview preparations is what will stand you out. It doesn't matter at all, even if it is religious studies you did in school. I have someone who studied PPE, he is a big boy in the bank today, infact got offer letter from 2 different banks and PWC at his entry level
