(Reuters) - Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona remained unclear as his father published a letter to La Liga on Friday dismissing their claim that a 700 million euro (625.86 million pounds)release clause in his son’s contract still applies if he wants to leave the club. Six-times world player of the year Messi insists he can leave on a free transfer while Barcelona, backed by La Liga, argue that the release clause must be paid. La Liga responded to Jorge Messi’s letter with a statement reaffirming its support for Barcelona’s stance that Messi’s contract was still valid. The 33-year-old Messi dropped a bombshell last month that he wanted to leave the club and that he could do so on a free transfer. A further twist in the story that has gripped the sporting world came as Argentina’s TYC Sports reported on their website that Messi had reluctantly agreed to stay with the Spanish club for another year. Jorge Messi’s letter was written directly to La Liga president Javier Tebas and accuses La Liga of making an error in their interpretation of the contract. “First, we do not know what contract you have analysed and on what grounds you conclude that there is a ‘release clause’ applicable in the case of him deciding to unilaterally end his contract from the end of the 2019-20 season,” he wrote in a letter published on social media. “Second, that doing so (reaching that conclusion) is founded upon a clear error on your part. As clause 8.2.3.6 of the contract signed between the club and the player explicitly says: “This indemnity will not apply when the player’s decision to unilaterally rescind the contract is effective from the end of the 2019-2020 season,” he added. “It is obvious that the compensation of 700 million euros, provided for in the previous clause... does not apply at all.” La Liga originally issued a statement on Sunday, hours after Messi failed to attend a pre-season medical, saying that they would not approve a request for Messi to be de-registered as a player with the Spanish football federation, unless the amount in the release clause was met. They underlined that stance in a further statement on Friday, despite Jorge Messi’s insistence that his son’s contract was no longer valid. It means the frenzy of speculation about where Messi will play next season will continue unabated. Should he leave Barcelona, Premier League club Manchester City are favourites to sign him, which would allow Messi to link up with his former Barca coach Pep Guardiola. Although even the Abu Dhabi-owned club might find a 700 million-euro fee, plus Messi’s huge salary, a deal-breaker. Messi, who has won more than 30 major trophies with the Spanish club and scored more than 600 goals, earns around one million euros per week. Messi informed Barca last week he wished to leave immediately, plunging the club into new turmoil less than two weeks after their humiliating 8-2 Champions League quarter-final defeat by Bayern Munich. Messi’s lawyers intend to invoke a clause in his four-year contract, signed in 2017, which would have allowed the forward to leave the club for free if he had requested it by June 10. They will argue that that date -- nominally the end of the season -- is now irrelevant after the coronavirus pandemic forced an extension of the La Liga campaign deep into August. If we are signing aging players,we might as well go for Thiago. A Thiago/De Jong Base with Coutinho up front will be crazy. Delay won't be a bad signing too but I don't know where's he going to play except that left hand side

After all the fvcking drama. Messi is just a cunt far worse than the stunts Ororo used to pull. This guy just messed with people's emotions with no apology for it.
Should he even remain captain?

“[I’ve taken so long to speak] because the loss in Lisbon was very hard. We knew that our opponent was gonna be difficult, but we didn’t wanna go out that way, giving off a poor image to the club and the fans. We gave a very bad image.”

Messi: “I wasn’t feeling well, and I didn’t feel like doing anything. I wanted time to pass so that I could come out later and clarify everything.”

Messi: “I told the club, above all, the president, that I wanted to leave. I’d been telling him all year. I thought it was time to step aside. I believed that the club needed younger players, new players, and I felt like my era at Barcelona had ended.”

Messi: “I felt very sorry because I always said that I wanted to end my career at Barça. It was a very hard year. I suffered a lot in training, in games, and in the dressing room. Everything got very hard for me and there came a time when I decided to look for new goals/pastures”

Messi: “This [decision] didn’t happen because of the result against Bayern in the Champions League. I had already been thinking about this decision for a long time. I told the president, and he told me that I could decide at the end of the season if I wanted to leave or stay.”

Messi: “In the end, he (Bartomeu) didn’t keep his word.”

Messi: “I didn’t feel alone. The same people have always been my side. That’s all I need and it makes me strong. But I did feel hurt hearing things from people, journalists, of people who were doubting [my love for the club] and saying things that I don’t think I deserved.”

Messi: “It helped me realize who [my friends are]. This world of football is hard, and there’s a lot of fake people. This helped me realize who the fake people are that I once looked at in a different light. It hurt when my love for the club was in doubt.”

Messi:"I wanted a winning project and to win titles with the club to continue expanding the legend of Barcelona.

"The truth is that there has been no project or anything for a long time, they juggle and cover holes as things go by."

Messi just turned the fans on Bartomeu. And fans have been eagerly waiting for a scape goat for a while now. He's losing the next election then or would have to resign/ step aside.

Major changes would happen. Major changes. I noticed Koeman has toned down on his audacious speeches and affront on the players he doesn't want in the team.

And you think him staying against his wish is a good thing?

He has said it explicitly up there "He wants to leave". Let him!

How do you think he will bring his best when his soul/mind is no longer there.

Na wa for you oh!

I don't see any difference between you and the Bartomeu dude: you both want to enslave the dude.

The board and club as a whole needed a kick in the backside and Messi just delivered that.

Barca have given the world lessons on how best NOT to run a football club for the past 4 years.

Now they will sit up.

Nice observations about Koeman too. Him go calm down na.

I hope Dembele stays fit, Coutinho is back, Messi Is staying.

Very hopefully a good future awaits us.

Major changes?? I don't see anything changing. Bartomeu is not leaving that seat until the elections which doesn't happen until next summer when Messi's next contract expires.

The only thing that could happen is if we win the champions league and if we can get Neymar right now which honestly don't see happening. He could then be persuaded by the presidential aspirants that Bartomeu will be booted out

This Messi's speech should be a sympathic one but should be seen for what it is. A self absorbed statement. This guy focused on the "I", how he feels, what about the fans. He didn't bother about them, or consider them.

The best players in the world
Lewandoski
Neymar
KDB
Ronaldo
Messi

He will keep dropping till he is forgotten. His saving grace is that this nonsense saga came to an end within two weeks.

Messi knowing the kind of asshole he is dealing with could have told fans, public or press he would be leaving for a new challenge. This interview was always going to be a Messi self justification speech. So he is been forced to stay, or held hostage all because Bart is threatening Messi's image. Mtcheeewww

We often forget that FOOTBALL is BUSINESS before SPORTS.

Only a fool will allow Messi leave for free. Of which by the way MESSI IS NOT LEAVING BARCA.

There is no sensible reason for leaving moreso no viable no option to leave to.

This not the first time Messi leaving rumor will be coming up. He has renewed contract more times than Real Madrid has won the Champions league this century.

SE QUEDA ... MESSI

P.S.
He would definitely not want to leave in this low esteem circumstance and inglorious manner.

I dont know what you Barca fans smoke.

At least your eyes is now clear.
