Saao: Nigeria coming under colonial rule mostly happened by 1. Conquest or by 2. Treaties (a traditional ruler would sign a treaty accepting British protection. Sometimes these treaties were obtained under dubious methods, and I'll leave it at that). No tribe sold any tribe to Lugard. Considering that many Nigerians at the time of colonization and even as late as 1960 did not know any other part of Nigeria save their village and maybe the neighborhood region 6 Likes |

Does it mean they can't trace their ancestral root even after the western invasion through colonialism? How can a certain set of people completely lost a sense of ancestral identification? 10 Likes |

oneeast3:. They didn't throwaway their origin but only adopted names due to difficulty in pronunciation. Warri isn't left out too. if they threw away their origin they would have been living like the whites, but that is not the case. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Still it isn't peculiar to ijawland, once saw a Zimbabwean being interviewed for a general documentary on African history. His name; Tournament Musawa. 1 Like 1 Share |

Some also bear the name as result of the parents ie some of them were fathered by foreigners, I got this info through the indigenous people. 10 Likes |

RedboneSmith: Very apt! I'm an Ijaw man and have also noticed this. Okrika is the westernized version of Wakirike, Bonny is the anglicized version of the native Ibani, Opobo likweise is from Opubo. In okrika, you have families bearing George, etc. In Kalabari, you have Harry, Bob-manuel, Briggs, Yellowe, Princewill. In Bonny, you have Jumbo, Manilla, Finecountry, Brown, Peterside, etc. It's all a rob-off of a long and entagling relationship with the early europeans. 16 Likes |

MrOjay1:Some Southwest surnames were influenced too. You will find them with surnames such as Thomas, George, Mann, Rhodes etc. But true, most Southwesterners didn't adopt colonial surnames. They mostly adopted first or middle names. 8 Likes |

The major reasons for colonising the well cultured brown skinned with their names are for easy pronunciation and identification so as to create easy connection and relationship.. Same way it was influenced in African Church by the early missionaries in terms of baptismal names.. They found it difficult pronouncing our native names, so they ended up giving us their names for easy process and flow of inter communal relationship, NOT BECAUSE IT IS A COMMAND FROM GOD, except that the name is ungodly.. Reason, most African Christians are brainwashed for change of well meaning native names to the colonials' during/after baptism. 1 Like |

MrOjay1:The riverain people of rivers, delta and bayelsa were slaves enroute to the americas in the late seventeenth century they were freed by the british navy in the atlantic and dumped in those locations. The british gave them those names as means of identification. Overtime, a common language was developed among them. Bonny, calabari, engenni, nembe, brass, itsekiri, okrika, ogbia, and the ijaws. Although, some of them are outcast and renegades from igbos. Igbos calls them Olu. 2 Likes 1 Share |

MelesZenawi: In the Uk, people of Scotland do not pretend that the wealth on the soil of London is Scottish wealth; Scots can’t even take it as commonwealth. There is fiscal federalism in the Uk. Areas use wealth in their places to develop their areas, then pay tax to the central government. No militants in the UK. 6 Likes |

UniportAgbero: Show me one college or even church in Rivers state that is older than DMGS, CKC or QRS all in Onitsha. These colleges were established by the British in Onitsha because they actually settled down in Onitsha, something they never did in Rivers except using coastline for movement of slaves trade. They never established anything in the present day Niger delta like they did in Onitsha. Why? 2 Likes |

It was/is more a thing of prestige --to distinguish themselves from their neighbours-- and for easy pronunciation on the path of the Europeans after centuries of close interactions. They didn't "lose" their culture like some ignoramuses claim. They bear European surnames alongside their native names. For every Horsfall, Lawson, Hart, Tariah, Pepple, Bobmanuel, Quaker, Douglas, Braide, David West, Princewill, Jackreece, Jack-Rich, Briggs, you have; Amachree, Dagogo, Igoniwari, Alalibo, Origoni, Batubo, Kalio, Diepreye, Okilo, Ikoli, Dokubo, Omubo, Darego, Owunari, Idoniboye-Obu, Ibulubo, Ibama and many more . 12 Likes 1 Share |

Some change their name due to religion and some to command respect due to their education and class and Most of them are descendants of freed slaves returnees as well, the Amaros, Saros. The returnees mostly resided in the Lagos Colony, with substantial populations in Abeokuta and Ibadan. Some also settled in Calabar, Port Harcourt and other cities in the Niger Delta. Though many were originally dedicated Anglophiles in Nigeria, they later adopted an indigenous and patriotic attitude on Nigerian affairs due to a rise in discrimination in the 1880s, and were later known as cultural nationalists. Notable families of the returnees are: Davies Cole Fernández Fernando Coker Sawyer Ransome Kuti Bright Smith Collins Fergusson Thompsons Vivour Williams Briggs Clarke etc. 8 Likes |
