It was from Rivers state that the Europeans entered nigeria

Opobo and Bonny

That is the photo of King Jaja and the little prince who upon his father's death return from Royal Academy London to be king.
No airplanes then
The journey was through Ships
And Opobo town was the gate way

The other calender is the picture of some notable Chiefs "ALABOs".
Note that some people by history don't have any single photo In there entire village or state as of that century

It's not a means fit

Those in those pictures if valued as of today are all Billionaires

Any West u hear is from a particular tribe in Rivers state

In Rivers and Bayelsa these names have been in existence as family names due to the white men's influence during the slave trade era. Reason you will find compounds bearing European names and those name give the family an identity.

Unlike the Delta and Akwa Ibom ones. These ones give themselves this kind of names and the names has no trace to their family lineage. They just started answering them because they feel its fanciful.

Those name are common specifically with Ijaw people of Rivers and Bayelsa state.

Those names came with colonialism. Some ethnic groups tend to romanticize the colonialist more than others.

You are very correct.

What were Bini trading with Europeans in 1480?
Pepper, Benin cloth, ivory, etc and of course they Brought European goods. Europeans were shown in bronze castings back then. Benin way of documenting things.

At that point Europeans had twin motives in Africa : Trade and missionary work. The foundation of West Africa's oldest cathedral, the Holy Aruosa Cathedral in Benin dated from 1470s

The Americas (North, Caribbean and South) were not even discovered yet, so no slave trade yet.

History that goes against Logic

Why did you think Calabar was selected as the capital of the old Southern Nigeria ahead of other cities.

i have always thought it was the yorubas(the ones living in Lagos) that first came in contact with the Europeans.

And the Europeans also lived long in YorubaLand(Lagos) before permeating other regions.

They stayed long enough in Lagos to establish the first mission school(Badagry and CMS)...so why weren't their surnames influenced?

The towns closed to the creeks, sea and along river Niger had the first contact. All border towns within 50km to the shoreline, river banks and creeks.

History is also not kind to towns that lack mineral resources and also the towns not along the path to areas with mineral resources.

Note - The different european expeditions and businessmen came in via the seas.

So Yorubas never existed in Lagos(Aworis the true owners of Lagos Aka Aromire), Ilaje Land, Ishekiri or Port Novo to be involved in those trade?

Bini Kingdom is not a riveraine Kingdom.

Re: About The Surnames Of Rivers State Indigenes by AnanseK(m): 11:36am On Sep 05, 2020
When the colonialists came to Hausa land , the HAUSA’s had difficulty pronouncing the Oyingbo names.

So they gave all the whiteman new names that locals can pronounce. For example:

1. Colonel Moreland was called — Mai Madubi
2. Major Burdon was called —- Mai Farin kai
3. Captain Key was called. —- Mai Danhannu
4. Captain Merrick was called —. Agazari
5. Captain Godwin was called — Mai Warki
6. Mr. Hilary was called - Mai Tarmani
7. Mr. Vergil was called —. Babuje
8. Mr. Abadie was called—. Mai Jimina
9. Mr. Brian Sherwood-Smith ( the Northern Governor)
was referred to as Mai wandon Karfe.
And many many more.
All the names have explanations and locals did not feel that they needed to change their own names to accommodate the invaders.

This is not true, the first University graduate in Nigeria is from warri (Dom Domingo) a prince( later was a king) who schooled in Portugal from 1600 to 1611 and married a Portuguesse. I think they were easily westernized that's why their names changed. They don't have deep cultural heritage.
oneeast3:
Europeans came to Onitsha and settled down long before going to Niger Delta. Europeans established so many premier colleges in Onitsha like DMGS, CKC, CRK, etc, before even looking to the direction of Rivers state, but it didn't make the Onitsha people that started having contacts with Europeans way back in 1500AD to threw away their origin.

Even the oldest missions in the old eastern region comprising of Rivers state were established by the British in Onitsha. It proves another point that they settled more in Onitsha than anywhere in the present day Niger delta, but still yet the people the British met in Onitsha never threw away their origin.

How can you keep saying this nonsense with confidence?

How can they leave behind their first site of civilization to journey into an unknown place?

These are the oldest schools in Nigeria by the way..

(1) Baptist Academy, Lagos : 1855
(2) CMS Grammar School, Lagos: 1859
(3) Methodist Boys High School, Lagos : 1878
(4) Methodist Girls High School, Lagos : 1879
(5) Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar: 1895
(6) Saint Annes School, Ibadan : 1896

All are missionary schools na. They have been trying to convinced you people that the missionaries came much more later after the traders but you guys just wouldn't understand.
