It was from Rivers state that the Europeans entered nigeria Opobo and Bonny That is the photo of King Jaja and the little prince who upon his father's death return from Royal Academy London to be king. No airplanes then The journey was through Ships And Opobo town was the gate way The other calender is the picture of some notable Chiefs "ALABOs". Note that some people by history don't have any single photo In there entire village or state as of that century It's not a means fit Those in those pictures if valued as of today are all Billionaires 2 Likes 2 Shares

westlius: In Rivers and Bayelsa these names have been in existence as family names due to the white men's influence during the slave trade era. Reason you will find compounds bearing European names and those name give the family an identity. Unlike the Delta and Akwa Ibom ones. These ones give themselves this kind of names and the names has no trace to their family lineage. They just started answering them because they feel its fanciful. |

Iamgrey5:Pepper, Benin cloth, ivory, etc and of course they Brought European goods. Europeans were shown in bronze castings back then. Benin way of documenting things. At that point Europeans had twin motives in Africa : Trade and missionary work. The foundation of West Africa's oldest cathedral, the Holy Aruosa Cathedral in Benin dated from 1470s The Americas (North, Caribbean and South) were not even discovered yet, so no slave trade yet. 3 Likes |

MrOjay1: The towns closed to the creeks, sea and along river Niger had the first contact. All border towns within 50km to the shoreline, river banks and creeks. History is also not kind to towns that lack mineral resources and also the towns not along the path to areas with mineral resources. Note - The different european expeditions and businessmen came in via the seas. |

When the colonialists came to Hausa land , the HAUSA’s had difficulty pronouncing the Oyingbo names. So they gave all the whiteman new names that locals can pronounce. For example: 1. Colonel Moreland was called — Mai Madubi 2. Major Burdon was called —- Mai Farin kai 3. Captain Key was called. —- Mai Danhannu 4. Captain Merrick was called —. Agazari 5. Captain Godwin was called — Mai Warki 6. Mr. Hilary was called - Mai Tarmani 7. Mr. Vergil was called —. Babuje 8. Mr. Abadie was called—. Mai Jimina 9. Mr. Brian Sherwood-Smith ( the Northern Governor) was referred to as Mai wandon Karfe. And many many more. All the names have explanations and locals did not feel that they needed to change their own names to accommodate the invaders. 1 Like |

This is not true, the first University graduate in Nigeria is from warri (Dom Domingo) a prince( later was a king) who schooled in Portugal from 1600 to 1611 and married a Portuguesse. I think they were easily westernized that's why their names changed. They don't have deep cultural heritage. oneeast3: 2 Likes |
