You could have said ijaw tribes because Rivers state indigenes mostly use Igbo names.

Between these two names, which one is easier to pronounce?

@ emboldened shows you know nothing

There is no such thing as Yariiba or Yoruba in Hausa or Fulani Language.

The Yaribaza slag which roughly translates to " Yoruba bastards" was formed when Awolowo played opposition to the coalition of Hausa and igbo government in the first republic. .

I repeat Oba of Lagos has no Land of his own in Lagos. Hence, he needs to form political affiliations for relevance.
Because Benin were not looking for Lebensraum. Everywhere Benin went to rule, they had no interest in land grab. They didn't even want Benin Language spoken by New subjects. Benin also resisted mass migration of Benin people. Even introducing Iwu or body tattoo to identify Benin people.

Abeg stop lying. Ya.riba is far older than recent political issues between Awo and Hausa/Fulani.
Perhaps it's your Yoruba writers that know nothing. Public place is awash with how Yoruba came about.

Pls don't mislead others, the present Niger-delta was the first settlement for the European slave traders.
Calabar was first point of call before proceeding hinterland.

Oba of Lagos has no Land of his own in Lagos outside where his palace is situated. Bini didn't actually conquer the Aworis, the Aworis welcome Bini with open hand because of Oba of Bini affinity to Ife.

Same thing happened in Ibeju area of Lagos

By the way, same thing happened to the ishekiris.

The Aworis submitted their rule to Benin Monarchy. That's what Areafada is saying.

Why are niger Deltans not bearing portugese names since they came before the British in that region.

The Portuguese settled mostly in the western region. Especially Lagos.

Oh actually Benin elite people spoke Potuguese pidgin until late 19th century.

How do you think a word like sabi or over sabi came into pidgin English? Why do you think Niger Delta still shape pidgin? Because pidgin European languages have a long history there.

Sabi comes from Portuguese sabir, which is "to know". From old Latin that today is Saber in Spanish, savoir in French and Sabere in Italian.

Many of us don't just speak pidgin in SS. The words were known to our ancestors hundreds of years back. Of course English later displaced Portuguese. Until 1918, end of First World War, Togo, and much of Cameroon spoke German as German colonies. French has since displaced German.

I write my epistle not for those who argue blindly but for reasonable people silently reading.

Commonsense is not common. Tell us why they passed all those places and didn't establish a single school. Passing through a place is different from settling in the same place. English language is hard. If they actually settled in Rivers state before going to Onitsha, then there should be schools built in PORT HARCOURT in 1800. But it's not the case here.

It was stated earlier that traders and slave traders were the first to come who weren't interested in building anything before the missionaries who came to build missions and schools so as to abolish slave trade. But since you are daft and blind, you wouldn't see it. So, as I said earlier, take your ethnic ass to the back and stop displaying your folly. No one is interested.

Egba is a kingdom/town/village within the Oyo empire same with ife, Oko which binis corrupted to eko, abeokuta e.t.c...

it was not about 'unity', Oyo empire always granted autonomy to some villages/towns/kingdoms, the same autonomy was granted to the binis to establish their kingdom/town/villages...

Yorubas are never ever about unity, they believe every person can be and should be allowed to be independent and work peacefully with others...
OK I will wait for others to come and confirm their being part of Oyo empire.

Oh boy you sabi lie o. grin Lai Mohammed Na apprentice for your hand. Chai. grin

Eko is an ancient Benin word for camp. Another word is Ago. Which also gave rise to Ago Enibode or sentry came that is today Aganebode in Edo North.
Benin territory names of old are littered with military terms of old.

You are a terrible lair.

Didn't Bini people kill a Deji of Akure and installed their own stooge until Ibadan chased them out.

Even when Oyo rulled over Baribas and Dahomey, Oyo neither forced them to Speak Yoruba nor force leadership on them.

Regardless, the facts still remains that Oba of Lagos has no Land or strong claim to any land in Lagos. if he tries any nonsense, he would be detroned in a second. cheesy

And Finally Yariiba has no meaning in Hausa or Fulani Language. I challenge you to ask any Fulani or Hausa the meaning of Yariiba in their language

So why didn't the Europeans change thr names to ijaw name

If is part of our culture to take on names of visitors who lived and did business with us. It's our way of hospitality. There are si many Igbo named communities in our land for example. Also till this day an Ijaw man would not hesitate to name his child after a stanger who lived well with him.

We are that open minded. smiley

They hardly ever submitted, it was live and let's live arrangements which is very common among Yoruba settlements then.

Same thing happened in Port Novo with the Eguns who settled amongst the Yorubas.

They still had their own chiefs and they kept their lands.

..... unlike the rivers people. The people of ijaw and itsekiri stock like the calabar, also had long contracts with the europeans elements, but 4 two different motives. With the calabar it was mainly for slave trade and exploitations, but the ijaw and itsekiri were basically for trade reasons, so the business of slave trading never gain currency with these tribes. And so the whites saw that, there was a need to kind of assimilate with these people so as to have a flourish trade, hence they inter- married. This explains why you see the foreign surname common with people of ijaw and itsekiri who are situated in the present day bayelsa state.
Thanks for the enlightenment.

The first Europeans to land in Nigeria were the slave traders who were not interested in investing here but to pack slaves for trading overseas. It was the greediness of the people in the south south which made them the first point of call and they sold their people out in droves. The Christian Missionary Society (CMS) came after and their point of entry was the south west. That's why you have the first school and the first story building right there

Wrong!!!!! The first Europeans to land in Nigeria were not slave traders. The first Europeans were the Portuguese. They were just Portuguese explorers and traders in the 13th century. Record has it that they landed in Lagos and named the new land after the city of Lagos in Portugal. America was just discovered then and the first slaves in the Western Hemisphere did not land there until 15th century. So where were they taking the slaves if the first slaves in America landed there in the 1600s?

I've noticed the for a long time now that many Rivers state indigenes bear westernized surnames like Blankson, Douglas, Perricosta, Souza, Graham, Peterson, McColumbus, etc.

I have seen indigenes of Rivers who bear the above listed surnames alongside other ones too numerous to mention. Was there any kind of foreign culture influx in Rivers State that influenced these surnames?? Or have they just been bearing these kind of surnames right from inception?

I need opinions on this.
