South-East Candidates Adopt Northern States As States Of Origin To Beat Discriminatory Cut-off For Admission Into Unity Schools, Government Shuns Court Ruling Against Imbalance Candidates from states in the North West or North East are not required to score up to 100 out of 300 to qualify for admission, many candidates from the South East are now choosing these states as states of origin. BY SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKSEP 05, 2020 Many candidates from the South-East seeking to gain admission to Nigeria’s federal government colleges are now adopting northern states as their states of origin to qualify for admission, SaharaReporters has gathered. A source, who works for the National Examinations Council, the body that conducts the entrance examination into the unity schools, expressed concerns over the development. The source says the desperation is driven by discriminatory cut-off marks which in some cases require candidates from the South-East to score ten times more than those from the northern states. Close to 70 months after a Federal High court in Lagos ordered the minister for education to desist from applying discriminatory cut-off for admission into unity schools, the federal ministry of education has yet to obey the judgement. It will be recalled that a former Nigerian Bar Association president, Olisa Agbakoba, filed the suit in December 2013. Nyesom Wike, the current governor of Rivers State, was the minister of education when the lawsuit was filed. Agbakoba, in his supporting application, said that since the inception of unity schools, the Federal Government had not addressed the disparity in admission requirements for candidates from different geopolitical zones of the country. He stated that the Federal Government prescribes different cut-off marks for other states based on candidates’ gender and states of origin. Despite a court judgement that restrained the federal ministry of education from such discriminatory cut-offs, candidates from the South East have continued to face the same problem nearly six years after the court order. Revealing the impact to SaharaReporters, the source said, “You would see someone that is from Mbaise in Imo State, whose name is, say Chioma, changing her local government to Chikun in Kaduna State.” Because candidates from states in the North West or North East are not required to score up to 100 out of 300 to qualify for admission, many candidates from the South East are now choosing these states as states of origin. The judgment against discriminatory cut-offs was obtained by Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, from a Federal High Court in 2014. Since the court order, the discriminatory cut-offs had continued to be applied for admission into the 104 federal government colleges, with candidates from the South East disproportionately affected by the policy which stems from the quota system and federal character principle. The unwillingness of the Federal Government to obey the judgment has led experts in education to say that the government follows a tribal pattern in deciding what laws are to be obeyed. “When a law is made, and it doesn’t favour a section of the country, it will just exist on paper, and there will be no manifestation of it anywhere,” Bamikole Fagbohungbe, a professor of psychology at the University of Lagos said in an interview with SaharaReporters. “Nigeria is a peculiar country,” he says. “Here, when it comes to the rule of law, the government chooses which one to obey.” Last year, male candidates from Kebbi State, who scored 9 over 300, were eligible for admission into the federal unity schools while candidates from the South East who scored more than 100 were not. http://saharareporters.com/2020/09/05/south-east-candidates-adopt-northern-states-states-origin-beat-discriminatory-cut 1 Like |

Like I told a friend of mine many years ago in years to come if we don't break out of Nigeria... an Igbo man will be forced to rename his business a Fulani name, paying a northern as the face of his business or having a Northern acquire 70% of his business for him to be able to import his goods and do his business stress free in Nigeria and the world will keep quiet 6 Likes 1 Share

Simply put, South Easterners will have to adopt a northern heritage, even to become a president in their own country where, nepotism, tribalism and mediocrity is placed above meritocracy, justce, fairness and principle of equity is relegated. 3 Likes |

Why would Nigerians call anything with such discriminatory policy unity? It looks like same idiotic mannerism which termed union as unity in Nigeria. The schools should be rightfully called "Quota System' school not unity schools. Yet some dumbass fools in Nigeria will like to question the zeal behind the call for disintegration of shithole called Nigeria. South-east has the highest cut-off mark for the crap called unity school. 2 Likes |

MelesZenawi:They are funded and subsidised by the federal Government, with tax payers funds and mostly oil revenue which the SE contributes more than those Aboki Northerners who doesn't have cut off marks. You will never hear of this kind of disparity in cut off points any where in the world apart of this zoo, how do you expect the country to Move forward? Biafra is the lasting solution to all these nonsense. 4 Likes |

This story makes no sense. If an lgbo man choose a northern state as state of origin, did he also change his name. Are you saying that you cannot tell the likely state of origin from the name. Secondly there are few unity school and so hundreds of thousands of lgbo students, so what makes unity school special such that if you dont go there, you will not go to school. This story makes no sense 1 Like |

When chest beating turns around to bite you in the arse. The same people daily drumming chest of having higher academic standards than everyone else, are now wailing for having higher academic hurdles than everyone else. Put your money (or HB pencil) where your mouth is. |

History555: Unity Schools actually constitute less than 5% of the total number of secondary schools in Nigeria. No sense at all. |

Ojiofor: Nigeria is not destined to be great, so forget that side. Having said that it makes no sense to adopt a northern state as state of origin because of secondary education when onitsha and awka alone has more than 500 private secondary schools |

History555: Every instrument of injustice and marginalisation must be dismantled, it does not matter if Awka has more than 500k private schools that average Nigeria families can not afford.Government school is government school and there should be no discrimination base on tribe or region before a kid is admitted to the so called unity schools. 3 Likes |

Besides, this has been going on since the 70s! Hasn't the core north, that has monopolised power at the centre, been able to catch up with the Igbos since then? Any plans for a end date or is this gonna carry on for ever? 1 Like |

Some of us faced the same fate during University admissions. I was called names then for not changing my state of origin like others to either Kano or Katsina. It was so painful scoring high in both Jamb and Post ume and be denied admission because you are from an acclaimed Educationally developed state, even if you don't reside there. While your counterparts from the North get in with very low scores. Nigeria can never be better with such disparity. It doesn't promote competition. The funny thing is that they go on to head ministries and government parastatals and you wonder how Nigeria can be better. 2 Likes |
