Faithful007: For gas plant to be effective we need kilometres upon kilometres of gas pipeline stretching the length and breadth of Nigeria to evacuate gas from NigerDelta to far away North where gas plants would also be needed.. and gas requirement of power plants and cost implications on price of electricity per kilowatt might be high on average consumers if government doesn't subsidise it 4 Likes |

I know people will give answers like 1. Petrol Stations and Generator Sellers The answer is not that rubbish. Light is just like telecoms (MTN and Co) it is a business. It is the lack of revenue that is killing the industry. The industry needs to significant capital investment which can only be justified if they are collecting enough revenues. But only so many people are metered and only so many people pay bills. The CBN has been footing almost 30% of the light bill in Nigeria, but politicians wont let you know. If people were paying MTN bill the way they pay NEPA bill, will MTN have survived? That's the short answer. 5 Likes 1 Share |

1. Low expectations... The state of any society is the aggregate of the expectations of the people comprising it. In 2015, the Ghana Electric company started load shedding. This resulted in approximately 12 hours of electricity, daily. O boy, come see nationwide protests. Every single person spoke out against it, so they had to resolve it quickly. Here in Nigeria, we tolerate too much nonsense. 2. We should also be willing to pay more for electricity. 5 Likes |

a bit complex but here's my laymans understanding of the issues and solutions to them. 1. We don't generate enough megawatts. Nigeria considering the size of population and manufacturing capability would probably need between 30000-50000 MW to guarantee 24/7 electricity. not sure if the combined power generation stations can produce up to 20000 MW. solution would be to build more power stations which will take time and money. some are already being built in mambilla, taraba. we also need more investment in alternate sources of power like solar wind and water. 2. our transmission and distribution network is poor and decrepit. system needs modernizing so that the little we generate can be effectively distributed. The recently announced siemens deal should hopefully help in that regard. currently we only enjoy 3000-4000 of the 7000 MW generated. when siemens God willing is done with the first phase that should double the transmission and distribution capacity. 3. Government needs to help the power industry through proper regulation establish itself as a proper business enterprise the way GSM did in the early 2000s. this will enable foreign investment and expertise to come in. currently the industry is not conducive for investors to put their money in because they are not sure of making their money back. the increase in electricity tariff was supposed to address that but sadly poor nigerians will be unable to pay due to estimated billing and lack of meters. hopefully a combination of the siemens deal and scaled up metering should help nigeria get some appreciable amount of power which would reduce reliance on petrol and deisel powered generators. 4. Gas supply is another important issue that should be resolved. good there are some gas pipeline projects coming up which will supply our power stations adequate gas. Mistakemaker: 3 Likes |

dukeprince50:1. The $6bn Eko Atlantic is a business that can bring in billions in returns for its investors, but you referring to it as a useless venture? 2. Despite how expensive it may be, there are countless Nigerians who can actually afford it. Once again, it's a business venture by its delelopers, not a charity for the poor. 3. Eko Atlantic was developed as an environmental project to shore up the banks of the atlantic to prevent the ocean from swallowing up the entire V.I. 4. Eko Atlantic is financed mainly by private pockets. So the development cannot be an excuse for govt not providing electricity to Nigeria. 2 Likes |

Faithful007: Very well put. I don't see the reason why the sector can't be like the telecoms. I feel other alternatives to gas can be pursued. Coal is wasting in Enugu. More dams can be constructed across the country. These are alternatives to gas. All these will generate more direct/indirect employment opportunities 2 Likes |

allthingsgood:This should not be the question. Not every body in countries with stable electricity can afford it either. If power is constant in Nigeria, and every one has prepaid meter, then we pay what we can afford and manage it to suit us. The reason people don't pay is because they don't get to see the electricity . not to talk of the assumed bill 5 Likes |
Re: What's Exactly Stopping Nigeria From Having 24/7 Electricity? by Nobody: 4:18pm On Sep 06, 2020 |
jmoore: In South Africa 1. People don't bypass their meters, nor do they refuse to pay their bills 2. Bills are subsidized yes, but they have income from agriculture, mining , and a massive industrial and business sector and a tax to GDP ratio of 23% compared to Nigeria's six percent to pay for it 3. Even then Eskom, that's the Azanian equivalent of NEPA or our discos, has been rasing bills for power 4. SA also generates more power than Nigeria. 45 000 mw, part of which comes from nuclear power ( a by product of their nuclear weapons program under arphateid) Here in Nigeria we have none of that, we refuse to pay our bills , we bypass our meters and we don't pay sufficient tax , and our agro and industrial sector is not producing enough income to pay for subsides. Oil revenue had been falling since 2014 . And corruption is there And you want us to be like SA? Good electricity costs money..we no have moneye 8 Likes 3 Shares |
Re: What's Exactly Stopping Nigeria From Having 24/7 Electricity? by jmoore(m): 4:18pm On Sep 06, 2020 |
onegig:The topic has nothing to do with free electricity. You talk about subsidies. Do you live in Nigeria? Many Nigerians are maintaining companies they have no shares in. They contribute money to fix new poles, fix transformers or buy new ones. And you say these Nigerians are not ready to pay. Nigerians can pay for 24/7 power supply. Make prepaid metres available. 5 Likes 1 Share |

chloride6: Gbam. This is the answer. In fact there is a report by price Waterhouse Coopers on the power sector that points out that the thing is running at a loss. The revenue thing is even why privatisation happened in the first instance But some people don't want to accept the truth |
