10 Years After Graduation: What Are Your Experiences In The Labour Market? by Davidganna10: 8:59am On Sep 08, 2020 |
This is post is targeted at graduates of 1-10 years. Few days ago, a graduate of 10 years threatened to burn his certificate, this got me thinking.. Is it that bad? A graduate of 10 years cannot map out a career path or business plan to follow tentatively. This thoughts actually formulated these questions.. Are you doing what you envisaged as an undergraduate, or are you utilizing your survival instinct's. If you affirm the formal.. What is it? What are your challenges? Is it related to course of study? And if the later is affirmed.. What are those things you do to survive? What are your challenges? Your experience will help mold undergraduates and graduates alike and in turn, deter them from towing that shameful path like burning of certificate e.t.c 17 Likes 2 Shares |

Well I did marine engineering. It took me a year after graduation with thousands of applications to get one interview. The jobs didn't even exist. I just sent out my CVs to the email address of shipping companies and prayed something hit. I ran a business for a while and learnt to code and men it's so easy to get a programming job. It's only in the tech industry that one would apply for jobs and be getting an interview 3 hours later. Do well in an interview and you would be getting a job the next day. I thought it's just me as a marine engineer but apparently many of my friends with engineering degrees can't get jobs. The jobs don't even exist. It's not about going online and sending out applications. How do you send out applications to what isn't there. The world is changing now. Proper research on the job market has to be done before one goes into the university. Don't go based on hearsay. Go and do your findings yourself. 328 Likes 25 Shares |

Davidganna10: For programming language I would say it depends. If you are between 13 to 18 and want to get into programming. I would advice you to learn C and C++. If you are above 18, JavaScript and PHP. I believe those above 18 would be looking to get into the labour market and those two languages have the most jobs out there. Cost implication. Well just data. You are gonna spend on data a lot and then you need a lot of time at least 4 to 5 hours a day. 104 Likes 20 Shares |

tensazangetsu20:thanks bookmarked. What was your the job requirements?, was your academic certificate required during the interview? Or it was duly based on your experience on the skill? 8 Likes 1 Share |

Davidganna10:Only skill and a nice array of projects to show off. I am yet to see a programming job that lays emphasis on degrees. They always put computer science there though but in my experience its never adhered to and there's also nothing like connections. I didn't need to know anyone to get invites interviews unlike in most engineering fields where you have to know someone that knows someone to be able to get employed. 44 Likes 4 Shares |

Honestly being a graduate and searching for jobs for survival after the stressful lectures and burning of midnight candles is like trying to walk from Nigeria to USA. I studied microbiology, while some of my mate were working in the hospital and production company, I couldn't get any as at that times I had to settle for a bank job, that was where I had my Industrial Training (IT). I was lucky to get a job after my NYSC, as a contact agent with multichoice outsourcing firm where I picked 140 calls per day. I had to leave due to constant pains in my ear, with 40k salary I got lucky to manoeuvre my way to another company an IT company as the head of Admin and assistant HR, before leaving to like two places, can you imagine a microbiologist working as an admin and HR, which I doubt can't happen in the western country. Nah another wey I dey before COVID-19 collected it from me The problem is that Nigerian government and our lectures didn't prepared us for the labour market, all they are after is just to read from test books and collect their salaries. I keep telling people, not all graduate would be an employer of labour, setting up a company is not an easy task, considering many factors that is not in place in this country. Nigeria is not just the place to be honestly, anytime I wake up and I discovered that I'm still in this country nah vex I dey use wake up for bed. Please I'm still in need of job, I'm versatile in the area of admin, assistant HR, facility maintenance. My location is Lagos and Abeokuta, please make unah help me, wife and pikin dey house oooo, I no need anybody money, nah job I need, let me sweat for my money too. 0806098 186 Likes 20 Shares |

After graduation,I went into private school teaching. It was the toughest time of my life. I can't tell all that I passed through but it was hell. They would give me a load of subjects to teach. Out of the 9 periods in a day, I taught 8. At the end of the months, they would owe me on top kwa. To cut the story short,God helped me through my uncle and I got a lecturing job in one of the federal institutions in this country. I spent 3 years in the labour market. 110 Likes 3 Shares |

Well, It is exactly 10 years this year and I must say the journey has not been that easy. I never sought for employment though. I had been running business: Recharge Card in Bulk before it went South after some robbery incident. I got some few connections with Baba Obasanjo, so I worked at OOPL for 2 years from 2015-2017. But that life was not what I was designed for. I resigned and went back to the drawing board. Presently I freelance and I think I have made in 3 years what I was only able to gather in 7 years. My ADVISE: Enterpreneurship is not for everyone and office is not for everyone. Understand your calling and follow it. But I think it is okay to gather experience working with a corporate firm for 5-10 years before launching your own business full time. Note: It is foolish working at a Job without having a side business for passive income 117 Likes 5 Shares |

Did int'l relations in uni after graduation no job,I sent out application letters to every known major organization still yet no job. Alot of people came with the idea that I should learn a trade and create job for myself,I put on my thinking cap but still yet I couldn't figure out what biz or trade I could venture into because of no capital. Man cannot go and kill himself,I just jejely look for one hp system, bought Airtel WiFi,got a solar system that can power my laptops 24/7 and then start my bombing hustle and I have never for once regretted this decision because I now earn more money than the average bank manager.Even my colleagues criticizing me back then are the ones pleading now to learn from me. 77 Likes 5 Shares |

10 years after graduating and you can't find any problems on earth to solve with knowledge you acquired, then I'm afraid to say you're waste or you've wasted your time and resources. Didn't even go to school, I read books upon books and find out to be rich you need to provide solutions to people problems. I look around me, there was no problem... So I created one. As sharp Yoruba guy, I enter Yankee begin dey knack oyibo "Ata" (pepper) for my neighbourhood and still cure them.. Naso I take hammer. People wey create virus na dem create anti-virus. All these sickness wey full world now, wey dem lie to una sey na from animals... Na people create them to take cash out. Every sickness get permanent cure, but if them make permanent cure Na bad business for dem pharmaceutical companies, scientists and researchers... So dem give una temporal cure. Permanent cure means NO CASH OUT, temporal cure means STEADY CASH OUT. To make money for this life na brain, nobi degree. 70 Likes 6 Shares |
