sorry to meddle , but you are actually wrong you can use 6cm for drive ways if moulded with the right quantity of materials while 8cm can also be used for highways if moulded with the right quantity of materials

I’m not a builder so please take any of my postings with a grain of salt.

DPC: Damp proof cover. The material laid on bare ground to stop surface water from traveling up the walls. Recommend for land near water but I use it on all my builds as a matter of policy and insurance. Very affordable.

German floor: Colloquial term for monolithic floor. Basically pouring cement mix on the bare ground. Some consider this optional but is de riquer (sp) with me. One can just lay concrete mix on the foundation blocks.

Good luck on your project.

PS: There are two areas that I do not cheapen at on my builds, the foundation and roof.

PPS: I’m not a builder, not a bible, doesn’t need to be followed.

DPC actually not an alternative to german floor. It's actually one of the stages that make up a foundation. According to standard, after DPC german floor is next.

German floor is necessary and should be done once funds are available, it prevents dampness, cracks on the wall that appear as a result of settlements, Scorpions and another insects.

@n3xt and other builders in the house, does anything special need to be done for a decking not to leak after construction if one intends to leave it for at least 5yrs before continuing with upper part while living on the ground floor.

The building in question will be rented out.

Good evening boss.

I do not really know the stage you're currently as regards the building you intend to construct, however the following steps can be a guide.

1) I assumed you've already procured the land for the site of the construction. In that case, you "may" need to get a survey plan in order to know the size or area of the land because that will help the architect in his design.

2) Commission an Architect to take your briefs (what you intend to build) for the building. If you've an open budget, then the architect can furnish you with different proposals about 2 or 3, from which you can choose the one you desire.

3) If you want to work on a budget, it's advisable to bring in a quantity surveyor to work alongside the architect in tailoring his design to your budget by helping you with a preliminary estimate. This is where most clients ignore and subsequently live with the consequences.

4) When you're fully satisfied with the Architect's design, then he will produce working drawings for you to be used for construction purpose.

5) Engage a quantity surveyor to help you prepare schedule of materials and labour or bill of quantities for the proposed project in order have the financial implications of the project at hand.

6) Since you've mentioned about hiring a contractor or builder for the project, have your quantity surveyor give about 3 invited contractors or builders to "price" a blank bill of quantities already prepared in stage 5.

7) Have your quantity surveyor assess their financial bid while an structural engineer assess their technical bid.

The Quantity Surveyor will advise you to award the project to the "least responsive bid". Hire the contractor, mobilize and work will commence on site.

9) Have a solid arrangement of method of payment to the contractor while the work goes on.

I pray God give you funds to complete the upper floor soon.

Have you done the slab?

If YES, apply cement slurry (cement-sand mortar mix) all over the top surface of the slab to plug any porisity left and or any cracks (through shrinkage or whatever means) that might have creeped into the slab.
Ensure the slurry layer is sloped to drain water away from the roof.

If NO, do your concrete slab to standard thickness. After curing and drying, do the above to a desired slope to drain off water away from the roof.

This should take care of the worries. This comes at a cost though.

use marine board for the decking or use nylon b4 decking is most prevented way, Aventure mentioned it smtimes ago, i can remember, but is not a permanent cure for licking.

Your expected expenditure will be close to 4m or 5m due to high raise of building materials in Nigeria now.

Today there are many antibacterial paints with formulation to produce a cleaner environment.

There are also steam resistant paints and the greaseproof paints that can be washed without any colour fading.

The possibilities out there really are endless!

Damp proof course is same thing as German floor, but some layman call it German floor because maybe they didn't cover with nyon before concrete

Search for "how many blocks you might need for your building or fence" or so, you will find the formula to calculate the numbers of blocks you might need,.... for cement, a bag could set about 60-70 blocks, just divide total of blocks with a number between 60-70 to have an idea of numbers of cement......for the column/pillars, it depends on the sizes tho..... I will leave that for the experts in building.

Note: This may not be accurate, always make provision for unforseen circumstances.

My dear, If I tell you say I know, na lie - My knowledge of building na from this thread and asking questions. I don't know if Satin paint is used for exterior walls. Note that Satin is not a brand but a product type. The building gurus in this thread will definitely intervene.

We do satin right at Regal paint. It's easy to clean truly.
It's not advisable to use it for outside because it does have the film thickness on application like matte would and the sheen would eventually dull to a matte finish under sunlight after some time.
Matte is the best for external use.
Better still, matte with water repellent properties.
