The Ebonyi State Government has taken over the Presbyterian Joint Hospital in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state following a petition by the community that their 100-year lease on the hospital had expired.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike, stated yesterday that the state government had to revoke the right of occupancy of the hospital established in 1912 in the public interest.

The community had petitioned n the state government alleging misappropriation of funds, high medical bills, use of obsolete equipment, and absence of qualified doctors, calling for a takeover.

Umezuruike said the community also alleged poor management of the hospital.

He said: “Uburu people donated the land to the Church of Scotland Mission in 1912, not to the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.

“When the Church of Scotland was leaving, the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria came in, probably because most of the workers were members of the church, especially the Governor of old Eastern Region, Dr. Akanu Ibiam, but ownership was never transferred to them (PCN).

“The hospital was offering qualitative services until the 90s when the Church of Scotland stopped sending personnel from the Netherlands, and the clinical services and management became completely indigenous with attendant deterioration.”

The commissioner said the ownership lease expired in 2011, adding that the PCN or any other body linked with the owner failed to apply for a renewal of the ownership lease.

He said to prevent a complete breakdown of law and order, the State Executive Council on July 14, in accordance with the Land Use Act (Cap L.5 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) was forced to revoke the right of occupancy in the public interest.

Umezuruike said the House of Assembly affirmed the revocation, saying the hospital had been renamed Ebonyi State University Community General Hospital.

The state government asked those managing the hospital to step down immediately.

I just hope the government will reposition this hospital. It was the only major hospital in the whole of ohaozara before the general hospital in onicha

Such a shameful act exhibited there by the government. Sent thugs to go and chase away sick patients and staff of the hospital. If you see the video how a commissioner for health led thugs to beat up the chief medical Director and other staff.

A hospital that has served the community for more than 100years since it was established by the missionaries. You came unannounced beat up and chased away over 200 staff of the hospital without any compensation. How they will feed their families does not concern you. What we witnessed there was a worst inhumanity to man by power drunk government officials.

This is even when the whole 13 general hospital owned by the same state have all gone moribund, and you want to take over a privately owned hospital by the church. I mean at a time that governments all over the world are encouraging private investors to take over and run businesses. It was indeed callous.

It should be re leased to a competent body bcoz I also doubt government ability to manager more assets when they haven't improved on the ones they have

I know say you get coconut head.
Maybe you should have read the part about when top notch services were provided when there was direct funding from Scotland.

Billing is not the problem, rather it is that the hospital is in the hands of incompetent people.

In the East, any thing, be it school or hospital that are not managed by the Catholic church or Church of Nigeria, Anglican communion is a scam.

All other churches there have not proven their capacity and capability to manage anything.

Let's hope the hospital isn't going from bad to worse in the hands of the government.

We have examples of how bad they've managed the state owned institutions.
