Vapor barriers (abi DPM or Nylon ) are installed to protect what is inside your house from destructive matter that can seep through the foundational floor. If a vapor barrier is not installed, water will seep into the foundation and cause a major damage to wood floors, walls, and paintings in a house.

Never build a raft foundation like the last two pictures below.

People fail to realise that the slab in a raft is the main component that transfers the load to the soil below.

You see my friend, that type of foundation is called downstand beam-raft foundation but a special kind where the raft is built on stabilized soil.

For that reason, the action of the foundation work where the slab must have a direct contact with the sand fill (which must be compacted properly and CBR test carried out to make sure that the bearing capacity of the soil can safely carry the foundation.

When the void inside the foundation is left unfilled and decked like he did above, then you are not going to have any action and the foundation will fail by settlement.

Thank you
QSFemi:
It's clear now.

However, the dimensions you gave as 43 feet (12.9 metres) by 35.5 feet (10.7 metres) can not in any way accommodate this kind of design, 8 units of 2 bedroom apartments.

I advise you to get the right dimensions, length and breadth, of the building in order to get the answers you seek.

Thanks.

That’s true. Never build a raft foundation like the number 3 picture above. Number 3 picture is a pile foundation.

Honourable, what’s wrong with number 4? Let’s learn.

This is one reason I only share projects executed directly by me.

I’ve shared pile foundation with a suspended slab above.

Here are pictures from construction of the building in Pics 4 of my earlier post:

How else do you build raft foundation? Do you mind showing us pictures different from this? cool

If anyone read my post clearly, you’ll see I wrote “Your foundation design determines which one to go for”

There’s never a one-size-fit-all approach to foundation design. Neither is foundation design limited to raft.

Peace!

I disagree too.

North America use Building, Cost or Construction Estimator, specifically not the term Engineer or Engineering (see first screen shot for reasons) for job duties exactly as that of a QS.

Look at the professional organizations;
UK: Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
US: American Society of Professional Estimators
Nigeria: Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors

QS/Construction Estimator is not an engineering degree.

Cost Engineering also known as Project control engineering on the other hand is an Engineering degree and its duties is not just providing a cost estimate but also determining profitability or usefulness of the investment and the comparative options hence the Evaluation in the BEME. The evaluation is what differenciates a BOQ to a BEME.

I first heard BEME in class, a civil engineering class and answered test and exam questions on it. Something that is part of the curriculum could not have been coined in Nigeria by Nigerian engineers or my lecturer for the benefit of Nigerian engineers.

This is not a contest bro.

I am aware of the role of a QS and I am aware of my limits as regards your professional roles. Some of these roles of a QS cannot be done by even a Cost Engineer that bears so much resemblance to QS. For example, Contract Management, Contract Laws, contract bids and tenders etc, these duties are not done by even cost engineers.

You really need to calm down and look your profession over, donot limit yourself to quantities and cost, there are no duplication of roles when it comes to the difference between Cost Engineering and Quantity surveying. This rivalry you seem to have developed has no basis simply because you just feel threatened by a similar but otherwise very different profession that you don't seem to understand.

This is hilarious bro. grin

Ok. No p. We move

Please what can I do to have the arcs missing in the beam on the ground floor put back in there?

Also, 11 bags of cement used for plastering two fairly spaced rooms and two rest rooms. Is that usage good enough?

Is Dangote Blockmaster cement good for plastering?

When we had an almost similar situation, we just simply introduce a new formwork, chiseled the beam a bit to anchor some iron rods to it.

Hope this helps!

11 bags for two fairly spaced room, not bad if you have good mix and sand. That’s like average of 4 bags per room.

But if God bless you, kindly add more bags (maybe 1 or 2 more) of cement. Plastering is a part of your build that requires to be quality upfront.

_____
You’re good with any 32.5 Cement. Blockmaster (42.5 R Grade) is not a bad one tho.

Talking of the mix, the masons did 10 paint buckets of plaster sand plus two buckets of sharp sand to a bag of cement.

Top of the day to the house

Great job from most of the contributors on here, especially the pro's sharing expertise for free.

I was scrolling through old Nairaland building threads and stumbled on a floor plan that really caught my fancy (attached)

I have two questions

firstly can it fit into a 50x100 and still leave moderate space for parking etc

Secondly what would a bungalow like that cost to erect with average finishing, all ceilings POP.

1. First of all 3 exits to a bungalow is kind of much.

2. The main entrance should lead to the main lobby through the anteroom (there should be a door there, having to go via the anteroom, living room and finning to access the lobby is stressful). The exit at the dinning should be closed, I have never seen a dinning exit.

3. The masters bedroom punch out is unnecessary considering the land space you have plus if it's a necessity, then there should be a window on both sides of the punch out, so you can act as security at night grin)

4. On this plan, I prefer the entrance to the laundry be on the exit side and not in the lobby.

5. The kitchen has 5 doors.... 5 doors shocked,

6. The main lobby is crooked, too many cuts and bends

7. I don't like this plan.

TO YOUR TWO MAIN QUESTIONS:
1. there will be shortage of space left unless you recalculate on size.

2. This is a big, big plan... You will invest a lot on doors tongue but 15m should pull you through if I'm not micing words

CEMENT MIX RATIO

Here is a general guideline for mixing of cement by Lafarge:

For higher strength concrete Grade 25/30
Use 1 Headpan Cement/1.5 Headpans Sand/3 Headpans Aggregate/0.5 Headpans Water

For medium strength concrete Grade 15/20
Use 1 Headpan Cement/2 Headpans Sand/4 Headpans Aggregate/0.5 Headpans Water

For lean mixes Grade 7.5/15
Use 1 Headpan Cement/3 Headpans Sand/6 Headpans Aggregate/0.5 Headpans Water

For MORTAR & PLASTERING
Use 1 Headpan Cement/6 Headpans Sand

I was almost getting lost with all the types of mixes until I saw the one that pertains to me down there.

So I'll take it that 2 headpans of sand make 1 paint bucket, and 2 headpans of cement make 1 bag of cement.

Whoa! I'm learning. Thank you professeur smiley
