Subsidy by another name

In 2018, NNPC was importing fuel at 180, selling it at N137

Underrecovery is the amount paid to NnPC to account for the difference between the actual cost of import and the actual cost of sale.

Prone to corruption like the previous method when everyone was an importer, and government paid them the difference between cost and actual cost at the pump.

Without underrecovery, fuel would have cost 250 naira per liter as early as 2017 , which while harsh would have been better for our savings.

And economic development long run.

There is a reason why APC isn't running the economy well. This is a big part of it
Bros there is nothing like subsidy since crude price fell to below 50$, what this govt iS battling is crisis in forex.
They should tell us how much is fuel in international market

Must it be by a protest that seems easily so quellable particularly by this oppressive administration?

How about thinking out other quiet none violent approach where the lives of the willing aren't put on display for a shooting practice?

When the hunter learns to shoot without missing, the bird would learn to fly without perching.

Let's get creative and design other means of protests that'd be hard for them to quell at least not so easily.
suggest the other means. i think this government is trying to hide its face . jonathan endured all lines of protest and criticism nobody was killed or arrested . we must fight against this tarranny wether it cost us our lives for the benefit of the future generation.

If you refine fuel at 160 and above and sell it at 87 naira , losing 53 naira per liter sold, would you have the profit to invest in refining? Or sustain it? Or pay for it.

That's the main reason. So long as people want to buy fuel below its cost of production, and so long as government pays a subsidy that only covers the difference and doesn't let one make enough profit, that's why we have bad refineries, and people smuggling fuel next door

The cost of importstion is the contention here - it drives up the pump price

Yeah and people dont want to refine fuel here because the government under subsidy setss the price below the production price

Thaat is why we have importation. Because refining fuel in Nigeria has never been profitable under subsidy(Dangote is able tobulld a refinery because he got loans , which in the event he defaults, the banks just take over his other assets and get their money back)

If you want to stop importation, stop the paayment of subsides, and th setting of prices below the production price. Allow marketers to sell at whatever price they want, and depot owners and even refiinery owners to sell at whatever price they want. Tat wiil attract investment, and more jobs and refineries by extnsion, and eventually lower prices, and Nigeria even expotiing petrol self.

Imported fuel is currently sold at 160 inclusive of marketers profit margin - §locally refined fuel will be less than that inclusive of profit margin along the production chain therefore govt will nkt need to set prices - §moreover govt has state owned refineries which they can run and sell fuel at profit what they sell in nnpc will be an advisory for major and independent marketers.

But corruption in govt has run the refineries down such that they always need tam which itself is a conduit for siphoning dollars.

The thing is most of the comments here are similar to 2012 comments (was not on Nairaland then, but on over online platforms) when people called GEJ names for raising fuel prices from 65 to 140, at a time when it cost 99 naira to import one liter of fuel

Nigerians seem to want fuel and light at a cost below the production cost. How Nigeria would pay for it does not bother them at all

Even the corruption inherent in the thing( someone can request for more or less money to cover for fluctuating prices), has not stopped Nigerians

Truth be told, oil subsidy has to go. It is driving down our economy and our finances

No sense in your writeup. Kindly go back and read what the person you quoted said. From the writeup you can deduce he was speaking about freedom of expressions/human rights.
So I dont know why you are at sympathy with the government for the increase in fuel price when the post clearly states about the oppression of human rights by that same government.

Many people also link the increase in fuel prices to the same tyranny of the government

When we don't have the cash to pay for it.

Yes, they should not have been arrested. But tryanny is not stopping payment for an unsustainable subsidy
