Let us summarise the key achievements directly linked to the governor: (1) Edo Best: An initiative to transform the educational sector in Edo State. Obaseki purchased and delivered tablets and smartphones to teachers to load their lesson plans. Social mobilizers were also trained to inform people on the need to protect shared facilities in their domains. Verdict: This is an achievement in the 21st century by a sitting governor? What is the job of the ministry of information and social orientation? (2) Revolutionary Revenue Collection From Transporters: Obaseki scrapped the private collection of levies on road users and introduce the use of scratch cards which led to to a 1011% of previously remitted levies. Verdict: This is not an achievement. Plugging loopholes is a must for efficient running of systems (3) 55MW CCTEC Ossiomo Power Plant: Basically, the Chinese build and operate the power plant and Obaseki simply purchases the power (electricity) from them. Verdict: Paying for electricity is not an achievement (4) Edo GIS: This scheme computerises ownership of lands by issuing a digital certificate of occupancy. The argument is that since the process of acquiring land has been digitized, investors would be attracted once they discover that the cost of acquiring land is cheap and corruption-free. Verdict: I am as surprised as you (5) The Edo Fertilizer and Chemical Company: Obaseki attempts to revitalize a moribund fertilizer plant which is expected to produce enough fertilizers to be sold to neighbouring state. Verdict: Is it NOW operational? How many Edolites have been employed? (6) Edo Modular and Refinery Company Limited: This is a refinery to be operated by the Chinese. The benefit in the MOU signed by the governor is that Edolites would be trained in welding, refinery operations a,d fabrication works. Verdict: How many Edolites have been employed in the development of the modular refinery? (7) Gelegele Port: This seaport would be built and operated by the Chinese to export goods to be produced in the Benin Industrial park and serve as an agro-processing zone. Verdict: We have a port in Warri (which is not far from Edo State and in Port Harcourt and in Calabar; wouldn't it have been more sensible to build a rail linking Edo to these places to serve the local needs before exporting? Is it wise that critical infrastructure are allowed to be operated by foreigners (the Chinese in this case) who are ruthless businessmen? I personally think this is a white elephant project (8.) Benin Industrial Park: This is basically still in development by the Chinese. There was no mention that actual work has been done beyond signing MOUs and securing project partners. Overall verdict:Governor Obaseki failed. It is largely not his fault, it is because he failed in what many other governors fail in: they never plan. A case in point is Prof. Ben Ayade with his moronic Calas Vegas idea. Obaseki promised 200,000 jobs, he failed to fulfil it. I would have preferred if Obaseki had used his first year to complete Oshiomole's legacy projects and planned his own legacy projects instead of signing MOUs. There is so much to do that we don't even need the Chinese. A basic one, Edo State produces maize, cashew, yam, cassava and the best bottled groundnut I ever tasted in my life; setting up an agricultural processing plant would have revamped the state and employed many. Maize flour, yam flour, gari and cashew are exports that would earn Edo clean revenue. How about the minerals scattered all over Edo State? We need to avoid these quick-wins projects and do long-lasting projects. Let people see you working and you won't need to come to Nairaland to explain your legacy. If you have the ideas, banks would be rushing to give you loans and you won't need to involve the Chinese. Obaseki, if you win your second term, plan before you execute. 2 Likes |

Obaseki is a huge blessing to Edo State, even the Oba knows that if not for Obaseki's support it would have been difficult for him to deband Community Development Association popularly known as CDA, real Edo indigenes know what am talking about, During Oshiomhole the thief time the cost of obtaining C of O was #600, 000 but now it #50, 000. After all this one person who is not conversant with Edo will go online and start writing rubbish commentary and shouting Obaseki did nothing, expecting Federal Might to come fight for them. Obaseki will win 4+4= Sure Banker 4 Likes |
