Mass Actions Against Fuel Price Hike Begin Next Week by ijustdey: 10:19pm On Sep 10, 2020
The society group, Joint Action Front (JAF), in conjunction with hundreds of other organisations, has started a national mobilization, asking Nigerians to prepare for mass actions against the recent fuel price hike and increase in electricity tariff.

The group has fixed Wednesday September 16th for the commencement of the mass actions to demand the “immediate and unconditional reversal of the hike in petrol price from the N160 to the N86.50.”

Chairperson of JAF, Dr. Dipo Fashina, and Secretary of JAF, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, stated this in a briefing on the outcome of the national consultation with civil society organisations and some trade unions.

This is just as hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Lagos on Thursday to demand the reversal of the fuel price hike and electricity tariff.

However, the protest staged by the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN), was disrupted by security agencies which also arrested some of the protesters, including journalists fueling condemnation from the International Press Centre (IPC).

Aremu, who briefed the press on the proposed mass actions, described the latest increase in fuel price from N150 to N162 as “wicked”.

“We, thereby, condemn and reject the latest wicked increases in prices of fuel, electricity tariffs and value added tax (VAT), and contended that it is a product of the capitalist neoliberal policies of Privatisation and Deregulation,” he said.

They called on the “Nigerian working people, the oppressed poor masses, students, traders, professionals, women, unemployed youth, farmers, artisans, Muslims, Christians and faith based organisations to prepare to use mass actions to reject, resist and defeat the latest imposition of hardships by the deceptive and anti-poor people Buhari regime on Nigerians, which if not resisted and defeated, would compound the miserable existence of the vast majority of Nigerians, who are still groaning with the attacks of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The meeting urged Nigerians across the country to hold mass meetings and sensitisation rallies to reject the latest hikes and to struggle to defeat it, preparatory to the commencement of mass actions, which we agreed should commence Wednesday, September 16, 2020,” he said.

Deputy Chairperson of JAF, Comrade Achike Jude, in a chat with our correspondent, said: “This government came to power on the back of the promises they made to people to right all the wrongs of the previous administration.

“We cannot continue to provide excuses for their monumental failure.

“The unfortunate thing is that government officials, who are enjoying all the privileges and appurtenances of office, would come on air to tell us how expensive petroleum products are in other parts of West Africa.

“Nigeria is Nigeria, an independent nation that produces crude oil, sends it out of the country, and brings it back to sell to citizens at prices they cannot afford.

“The implication is that already the inflation rate has been exceedingly very high and Nigerians cannot afford it.

“The minimum wage of N30,000 which is a scandal that you promised Nigerian workers, they are not getting it.

“Even if they get it, they still cannot do anything meaningful with it if you have a family of three.

“How can a government who knows that about 110m of its citizens are operating on less than two dollars a day, impose this kind of hardship on the Nigerian people?

“Is it because those that are in government are so privileged that they are outside the suffering of the Nigerian people and they do not face the realities that Nigerians face every single day.

“This is a clarion call to Nigerians who are being marginalized and oppressed in their own country.”

Earlier in the day, the protest against fuel price hike in parts of Lagos was disrupted by security agents.

Daily Trust reports that the protest organised by the SPN started from Yaba with protesters marching towards Surulere and Ojuelegba.

But the protesters met stiff resistance from the Police and officers of the Department of State Security (DSS) who allegedly arrested some of them including journalists covering the protest.

A member of the SPN who was part of the protest said about 30 security vehicles were mobilised at Yaba to disperse the protesters.

As of the time of filing this report, the arrested protesters were still in custody of the police.

I just don't understand why citizens can't demonstrate freely in a democratic nation.
To think that they want the youth to come out and protest again the government knowing fully well how protesters are treated is heartbreaking.

No need for all this ...the truth remains Nigeria doesn't need to go back to Subsidy again, subsidy only made friends of any sitting president super rich without any work or creativity being exchanged for such work and it bled the ability to save of a poor country like Nigeria .. Any protest now will just make the fragile Economy to get worst and I don't think the govt will budge not because they don't have empathy bit because the can't afford subsidy as it is now ..

There's a point one will get pushed to the wall and everything will just boomerang. This government shouldn't take Nigerians for granted.

Normal scam. Make a lot of noise and get invited by government. Return home with brown envelopes after calling off the strike.

We don't need these scammers. I have a dream that Nigerians, inrespective of tribe and religon will soon rise against the greedy politicians and leaders.

All talks and no single action.
If the youths of this country were to be sensible enough, these old men at the helm of affairs of this nation would be on their toes by now.

You may ask me " you yourself what are you doing"?
Well I would have loved to share it publicly but for the sake of the security of our agenda I won't..
There are security operatives on this platform who have turned a blind eye to the plight of Nigerians and would rather choose to sabotage the movement.
So if you feel this situation of this country needs serious attention and you're willing to contribute your effort towards positive transformation for posterity sake, you can hit my DM.

Something heavy is brewing!!!!

The only major thing we as Nigerians enjoy is low prices of consumer goods, a situation were you invest on capital project leaving the prices of consumer goods on the high is a total waste of effort.

Na Belle first before anything and we know say fuel price has a way of affecting the price of goods and services .

Govt at all levels should do the needful and not the other way round as you were elected to serve the citizens.

Late removal of subsidy led to this wicked act, but it should have been removed before increment to N145..

-But the comic thing about the coming protest is that many will use it as a stepping stone to work out their way to influence, fame, and appointments come 2023 that will keep the country on the same immovable and unprogressive spot..

Anybody above 65 years should not contest for Naija presidency
Anybody that is not an industrialist should not bother to contest for the Naija presidency
Any president that misrule Nigeria through nepotism, bigotry etc should be stoned and arrested on the day of handing over to a different govt.
Now I believe Nnamdi Kanu, we have an impostor steering the affairs

The fvck
Niggarr!!

We must start addressing trivial issue as we ought to.

#160 or whatsoever price they fixed is totally unacceptable.

It is ludicrously ludicrous grin

Am I making sense??

And what's this hype with Davido's Fem. I mean the worst song on Burna's Twice as Tall is better than that crap of a song grin, there are no even bad songs on Burna's album, we dey vibe to everything.

David and his fans are swimming in mediocrity, so much noise for an average song, he should go get Wurld to write him another song.

Let us settle this.

Like for the worst song on Burna's album grin, and share for Davids' crap fem.

I no even wan bring Machala enter the equation, them never born Davido papa well near am grin

Peace out!!

This protest should have been uncalled for if the APC allowed the subsidy of 2012 to be removed. Now, after COVID19 economic meltdown, they're now adding this burden. It's needful but the timing is bad.

This is a much better approach. Plan it and involve as many because there is much strength in numbers.

On the other hand, I would love a pact on total deregulation of the industry.

What is the essence of constant protest and nagging when you know that the current administration are deaf and wpukd go in any way to frustrate you, shut you up and also detain you for several weeks and month is you are caught protesting.

The current administration is not the best for Nigerians to come out and air their opinion on the bad leadership ravaging the country and it citizens.

Let me just stay in my house and keep praying that I should sleep and wake up one day in Canada
