If you are a web developer or a budding programmer, you may need to buy a laptop designed for your needs. Sure, there are no laptops tagged “best for programming” yet, but you can determine what’s best by generally going over the specs. Also, unlike with gaming laptops, you may not need to spend a lot of money on a work laptop either. You will most likely be able to buy a good programming laptop for a price between 200,000 Naira and 250,000Naira.. You will be able to get a really good one if you are willing to spend somewhere between 372,000 Naira and 500,000 Naira. However, price is not everything when it comes to laptops. Here are several tips on how to buy a really good laptop for web development and programming needs: Choose a Decent Processor You don’t have to spend close to 640,000 Naira to buy a laptop with an Intel Core i7 processor. Some of the best programming laptops come with Intel Core i5 processors. Core i5 laptops are considered mid-range. But these machines can handle a variety of needs, including multimedia and some gaming. Programmers should not have any trouble coding on a Core i5 processor. Some languages, like Python, can even be run on computers with Core i3 or Pentium processors. If you are on a serious budget, Core i3 may suffice, but i5 is the best for future proofing your computer. Pay Attention to the OS Windows is the most preferred OS for programmers, and Linux follows soon after. Windows machines are generally more versatile and have higher levels of compatibility than Macs. So, if you are a general programmer, buying a Windows machine will be the best. Linux is also a good option, especially if you like custom designed software and are on a budget. However, make sure the programming language you plan on using can be run on the laptop you buy. For example, if you plan on running Xcode, then you will need a Mac as the other operating systems are incompatible with Xcode. Also, if you are an iOS mobile app developer, buy a Mac as it the best system for programming for Apple devices. Aim for 8GB of RAM The more RAM you have, the faster your computer will be given that it has a decent processor. As a programmer however, you won’t need to spend hundreds more on a 16GB RAM capacity. Often, 8GB of RAM is enough for most programming and development needs. However, game developers or programmers who also work with graphics may need RAM around 12GB. 16GB is max RAM at the moment and only heavy graphics designers and video editors need that much. Go for an SSD Solid state drives are way faster than the traditional hard disk drives. So, if you can, buy a laptop with an SSD. HDD is fine as long as other specs are in line. If you are on a budget however, you may only be able to afford an HDD. Programmers can really benefit from SSDs. The only downside is lack of storage space. With HDDs, you can get up to 1TB of storage space, while for SSDs it may be limited to 256GB or 512GB. The importance of SSD drives can also be seen in Computer Realm’s top rated programming laptop roundup. All laptops are equipped with SSDs.” Don’t fall for marketing fluff. Follow the above advice to get yourself the best programming laptop. 3 Likes |

Talk24:Windows the best for programmers? I laugh in Swedish. It seems you haven't heard about GNU and POSIX. |

Ugaboy: What features are missing in Windows 10 if I may ask. Also why should anyone avoid games or high graphics games? |

Deicide:Until you try to build .NET applications using Macs and Linux, then you will understand what I am saying. Windows is better for programmers because it is more universal, and flexible. Just take a look at this Stack Overflow Developer Survey from 2019.

Talk24:That one is their business, I have used windows to write programs and I have used Linux well it's termux actually but your Android phone runs the Linux kernel (if you don't know what a kernel is don't bother with the rest of the conversation) and Linux beats windows in that aspect unfortunately because of POSIX and it's heavy use of GNU software which is free and open source, when you go deeper into OS stuff you'll understand. 1 Like |

Talk24:Eh, windows flexible have you heard of POSIX and ELF, for you to say such you haven't heard of it. |

^^ Why the rabid screaming of POSIX, POSIX, POSIX since morning. I guess you just came across that term and wont let us hear word. Its normal. The same stack overflow you run to to copy codes has told you its Windows hands-down, you say it's none of your business. By the way, POSIX has been in existence for over 30 years now, stop screaming it in 2020 like its some new technology. Haba !!! |

No need for POSIX and ELF binary executables here, the answer is simple. With windows, every software is download -> click to run. But Linux is a pain, apt-this, apt-that, purge, upgrade.... etc. Who needs that? you can have Linux on a VM if you need some features but trust me, OP doesn't need any of the features. Also free GNU doesn't always mean better. It's just a licensing like MIT etc. Rather than Linux use mac though they are equally empty to me but mac os is way more reliable , if you want ELF. Then speaking of programming, I cannot see advantages of Linux over Windows, even docker can be used on Windows. Then talk about native gaming, incomparable. I don't aim to compare OSes, rather to show that in this context, comparing them is pointless. |

valzey:So you don't update on Windows or what? I don't understand, when I was coding with visual studio back then I know the hell nuget put me through so on updates that is a different case, number two does windows run ELF? If not then it isn't flexible because that is a widely used format, number three you are talking about gaming and we are talking about programming for god's sakes, I know the hell I am going through with the VM I am trying to make, I can't catch divide by zero signals because bang, windows doesn't throw SIGFPE signals for divide by zero errors it throws exceptions and after reading about how to catch exceptions and the thing off me, I can't use C# because it's plain stupid to run a VM on top another VM, I am talking about GNU tools not GNU I am not that dumb and lastly Linux is modifiable and free I guess you've heard of su (super user) |

You totally have reason to use Linux, but most programmers don't and we can't advise budding programmers to get Linux because they will spend productive time trying to figure out how to get this or that working. I use Linux rarely so it's place is in a VM until WSL fully matures. If Linux is so important to you, you should use it as your OS or dual boot it not in a VM. And I left C++ for C# and I'm a happy guy now. I remember then when trying to port my C++ program to Windows, some headers then were not available on windows GCC. I gave up. 1 Like |
