Nah, many signings does not make a team if you can't see the synergy so I never rated their chances before. The way Allan, Doucoure and James complement together means this year is different. You have a technical and energetic ball winner in Allan, , you have a midfielder that will run you all day behind in Doucoure who is also defensively proficient, and you have a passer and goalscorer in James. That's every angle of midfield covered. That midfield can cover a lot of sins in their defence. They still have headless defenders like Mina but that midfield will reduce their defence exposure to brainfarts both by controlling possession and by overrunning opposition midfield plus being defensively tight in that midfield. I have always been of the belief that the strength of your midfield determines whether you lose the match before it starts. A good midfield keeps you in the game while your striker and goalkeeper win you the game. If you don't have a functional midfield, the best striker in the world won't make you win consistently eg Barca of recent.

I am not sure I have argued against the importance of a good midfield to any team. If anything Ibime made my case as to the relevance of a good defense in having a successful campaign. Everton did not need to score 3 goals today to guarantee a W. There some games your defense should see out.
Even though Fulham did not offer much offensively, we looked steady at the back and there was never that ill feeling that we will self destruct at the back and that is what good defenders bring to the table.
Replace Gab with Mustafi/ Sok/ Luiz/Kola and see Fulham score with a lot of clown shows that evoke jitters. How did Everton score? Well, Dier/ Toby were marking the same man who got in-between them for a beautiful header.

Arsenal had Sokratis, Mustafi, David Luiz, Calum Chambers, an inconsistent Rob Holding as centre back options..... Everybody knows pairing any two of these aforementioned players will never take us anywhere at least that was evident in the recent past.

So as a fan I believe if Arteta will make anything good out of his job as Arsenal manager he should first sort that deparment out because that is the weakest link in the team. As u can see he has done just that by bringing in Gabriel, will probably integrate Saliba as well while selling at least 2 of the clowns listed above.

A good midfield can never ever shield a poor defence like u are trying to paint things. Even a midfield that has a combination of the workaholic Kante + maestro like Xavi + Modric will not protect that Arsenal team of last year.
