* Kaduna Nzeogwu *Timothy Onwuatuegwu * Emmanuel Ifeajuna * Don Okafor *Humphrey Chukwuka * Chris Anuforo and * Adewale Ademoyegun The 1966 Nigerian coup also known as Igbo coup began on the 15th of January 1966 with mutinous Nigerian soldiers led by by Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and Emmanuel Ifeajuna killed 22 people including the Prime Minister of Nigeria, many senior politicians, many senior Army officers (including their wives), and sentinels on protective duty. The coup plotters attacked the cities of Kaduna , Ibadan , and Lagos while also blockading the Niger and Benue River within a two-day span of time before the coup plotters were subdued. The General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi , was compelled to take control of the government of a country in upheaval, inadvertently putting Nigeria's nascent democracy on hold. The president of Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe left the country in late 1965, first for Europe, then on a cruise to the Caribbean. Under the law, the Senate president , Nwafor Orizu , became acting president during his absence and had all the powers of the president. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_Nigerian_coup_d'état |

Cc. Igboid Proeast Igbochief001 Rugaria PROUDIGBO What could be the cause of the bloody coup, was it because Nnamdi Azikiwe's famous domination plan wasn't coming as expected ( though you folks dominated the the civil and military service then, perhaps Azikiwe, Ironsi and the 5 Igbo killers wanted TOTAL domination?) Why did Azikiwe travelled in build up to these night of blood? 4 Likes |

BrownLondon:Ok igbos wanted domination ? But same u said igbos dominated civil n military service How does that make sense to you ? ....it's never in Igbo culture to conquer anyone ...never in our history did we do that It's a well known facts the coupist plan was to hand over to awolowo because they believed his ability to lead Nigeria ...but that part of history has been buried but we know the real story https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/1966-coup-plotters-planned-make-awolowo-head-state-olutoye/%3famp=1 Now watch them close this thread 6 Likes 2 Shares

This is cynically distasteful. We should be exploring all avenues and media to heal from all the hate, distrust, and division within us as people and nation. |

Only in Nigeria you will display hate towards a major ethnic group yet insists on being in the same country with them forever and resist any moves for them to breakaway. 2 Likes |

Igbochief001: Of course, it's a "well known fact" .............in alaigbo land that the coupists were going to force Awolowo out of prison and imposee him on us, whether he likes to or not. This was the same Awo whom their political class colluded with their fulani masters, to throw into the gallows on trumped-up charges of coup plotting. Same way, Banjo too was jailed on Jan 17th- two days after- for allegedly, trying to topple Ironsi's regime. Incidentally, it was the same Nzeogwu who was the intelligence officer who shopped Awo for coup plotting that we are now meant to believe, wanted to spring Awo out of prison, 'cause of his ability to lead the country. 4 Likes |

valentineuwakwe:It important to know the history and the root cause of this mess, the first coup derailed the country which gives birth to series of coup and counter coup, it gives birth to people like Obasanjo, Buhari and Babangida to ever grace the first office of this country hence the whole mess we have now. Ibo coup and they are really enjoying the consequences of their actions. 1 Like |

Igbochief001: Azikiwe in one of his speech iterated how the gods designed Igbos to dominate Nigeria, how he was the only leader to reject the succession clause. We all saw/read about the atrocities he committed in the Western region ; From kicking against movement of capital away from Lagos, the Yorubas/Western region never wanted the FCT. How he masterminded the mid-west referendum (well, i may be wrong) Trying to be premier of Western region. Calling Lagos a no man's land. Involvement in Akintola/Awolowo (together with northern leaders) which led to Awo spending few year in prison etcetera. He had the chance to form the government with Awolowo but refused, he knew he would not be able to achieve his domination plan because Awolowo is one hell of a brilliant man, he chooses to form it with the fulani thinking they would be pushover, but he was wrong. It's audible to the deaf and clear to the blind that his inability to totally control the government led to the coup, he clearly had a hand in the coup. He wouldn't have travel prior to the coup. And talking about the coupist plan to install Awolowo, isn't that foolish ? You mean the same Awolowo that was jailed by Eastern and Northern joint leadership? Let's look at it from this angle, the coup took place on the 15th of january, and he, Awolowo was still in the prison untill July? (That's some 6 months after the coup) and the coupist didn't still release awo from prison, didn't that sound foolish? Ironsi didn't punish the coupist and that shows that he has a hand in it too, Ironsi should have release Awo from prison since you said the objective of the coup was to pave way for Awolowo. Let's argue with logic nah. 4 Likes |
