Firstly there is no space in the 1st team for Garner this season. That midfield is already looking crowded.

In addition, Garner isn't ready for the EPL. he needs a loan in the Championship or a weaker league for at least a season.

Mengi is physically ready to contribute to the first team, especially with all the sicklers we have in defence. I don't want to hype the guy too much, but apart from the fact that i would have preferred him to be a bit taller he has no real weakness as a CB.

2 major shifts in football philosophy have led to the preference for inverted wingers.

1) The most significant change was the switch from 4-4-2 to 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3.

With 4-4-2 there were 2 strikers in the box which meant the chances that a cross from a traditional winger would find a striker was still high.

However with teams now using 1 striker the chances of cross and nod working has drastically reduced. Now rather than just crossing for 2 strikers who are meant to supply almost all the goals the winger has to be able to cut in and contribute his own share of goals.

2) The evolution of the full back from a purely defensive player to an attacking outlet providing width. In order to have that space up front to run into it is better that he plays with an inverted winger who drags the full back inside thereby creating the space.

Both of these changes happened around the same time i.e late 90s and early 2000s which is why the last truly great traditional wingers Figo, Giggs e.t.c overlapped with the first truly great attacking full backs Roberto Carlos, Cafu AND inverted wingers like Pires, Ginola, Ronaldinho, Robben, Ribery became more and more prominent.

Valencia is a kick and follow winger. He would be useless as an inverted winger.

If you check inverted wingers practically all of them are good at manipulating the ball either through step overs like Ronaldinho, Neymar, Nani or close control dribbling like Messi, Robben, Ribery.

It is that skill and not their speed that creates the space to cut in and shoot.

Straight line runners like Valencia can’t consistently create the space to cut in and shoot.

Giggs was another bad guy. Most speedy wingers struggle with vision and execution of the final ball. That was where Giggs was different. He was quick and also could pass.
