Yes, I saw a documentary on this recently and I didnt know how bad the quest for the male child is in India. Like you rightly pointed, especially the poor, the families are wary of paying dowry for the female children hence do not want them at all. They'd rather have male children so theyd get paid a dowry instead

Your post implies that it is wrong for dowry to be paid because as you mentioned, parents spend years to raise their girls, implying that women inherently have value and therefore should not be rewarding a man for marrying them.
