US Moves To Restrict Nigerian Students To Two-Year Courses Over ‘National Security’

Foreign students including Nigerians could be restricted to admission into US universities for not more than a two-year period, a proposed government policy has shown.

This comes a few months after a failed plan to strip international students of their visas if they are not required to attend some classes in person, during coronavirus lockdown, in July.

The new guidelines from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), if approved, mean affected students will be barred from four-year courses in the US.

It was not immediately clear if Nigerian students currently studying in the US would be affected.

In the new measures published in the US federal register and scheduled for announcement on Friday, the DHS proposed a “maximum admission period of up to 2 years for certain students”, including those from Nigeria.

Among the countries targeted in the new policy are those on the US “State sponsor of terrorism list” and students from countries that visitors have overstay rate of more than 10 percent.

The DHS 2019 overstay report puts Nigeria’s in-country overstay rate at 11.12 percent; most African countries are also above the 10 percent maximum rate.

“A key goal of shifting aliens in F status from D/S to an admission for a fixed time period is to provide pre-defined time periods for immigration officers to evaluate whether a nonimmigrant has maintained his or her status,” the DHS said.

“If an immigration officer finds that an alien violated his or her status prior to or during the course of an EOS adjudication and denies the EOS request, the alien generally would begin accruing unlawful presence the day after issuance of the denial.”

It also said that the proposed rule seeks to reduce instances in which F, J, and I nonimmigrants — mostly students and exchange visitors — “unlawfully remain in the United States after their program or practical training ends.”

“Under this proposed rule, aliens who remain in the United States beyond a fixed time period generally would begin accruing unlawful presence,” it said.

Following the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration was in July forced to abandon a plan to strip international students of their visas if they are not required to attend some classes in person.

Just saw this on Twitter. Part of the Trump administration's racist policies.

It's important to note that under these proposals, you can still study for a four year degree as a Nigerian but you will have to renew your visa after every 2 years.

Congratulations to our politicians... They have managed to make Nigeria the laughing stock of all nations...

They loot our billions and run to USA and other first world countries to spend the loots... Buying exotic apartments in Dubai, like Atiku, in UK like Deziani and USA like Bukola... All this money could build and revitalise our real estate sector and even make Nigeria the prime destination for tourists...

But no... They steal from our country and big banks like HSBC help them ferry the loot abroad... They use their family members as conduit pipes to loot and bleed the country dry... meanwhile the common man keeps dying everyday from hardship, bad roads, poor healthcare etc...

Corruption has eroded both the public and private sector and killing Nigeria and Nigerians daily yet we don't want to kill it...

Is it not high time we start hanging those who loot from the treasury?

The north will readily agree but will the south support this move?

The south with all its intellectual sophistication is the driver and enabler of corruption in Nigeria.

The impoverished people there cannot use their intellect to challenge and effect a positive change in Nigeria... Their opposition to govt is only to give them an opportunity to get into power and steal from the treasury and abuse office.

Truly we have become sophisticated fools in Nigeria...

Perhaps the whole world should ban us from their countries and force us to return and fix this country instead of destroying it with our stupidity then running away to another country.

It will shock you to know that 80% of Nigerians abroad are southerners... South South, south east and south west.
