It is possible if the laid section is 460*230 instead of 150*460 if the standard dimensions of your block is 150*230*460. Earlier people used to construct even three storeys buildings but all walls especially load bearing walls are minimum 230 sections. For some constructors, they just intervene column 230*230 concrete column being flush with the walls. But now days due to the advancement of the Engineering, *frame structure* is everything. Godisgreatest1: Why? If the reason is to save cost, I think the savings is not worth the huge sacrifice. It’s like compromising on what should be quality upfront. - 9in blocks are more stable than 6in blocks (bending) - Better sound insulation - Easier conduit - Better support for vertical loads - You can build 9in blocks faster than 6in blocks If you consider the additional cost of building “Frame Structure”, then 9in blocks is far cheaper and more reliable than using 6in. 3 Likes |

I thank you all for your responses. I enquired about the size of blocks because I noticed that in architectural drawings, there are 'tiny' numbers (300, 225 and 150) in partitions or between rooms. So I only thought that using 150 represents 6" which may use up less land space. So if 9" blocks are used for 8 partitions it means 300x8=2400 space used, but for 6" it will be 150x8=1800 space added to the building size. 2400-1800=600 worth of space. If the 600 is in mm, that is approximately 2ft difference between both blocks. 1 Like |

diordaves: Sir, l appreciate your post a lot. At the bolded though: Past African leaders left a lot for the latter generations to admire...until the White Colonialist came and Stole, plundered and destroyed that which they could not steal and take to Europe and Arabia. Its a long story which cant be fully expoused on this thread but take for example, the Benin Artifact whose replica was used at Festac 77 symbol, that wonderful Artwork sits in a British Museam till today! It is among the millions of African heritage that the White Stole, leaving Africa beare to the bones. If White people could carry the Pyramid of Egypt, l bet you it will all be in Europe today, and not in Egypt. And legend even have it that they tried and looted the Tombs of the Pharaohs, with grave consequences at times. The Egyptians knew it will be looted and they did lay booby-traps at the entrances, which discouraged the White lootes a bit. Maybe the current migration into Europe and the Americas will unleash "African colonialist" on Europe and the Americas, wo we can also pilage their 'legacies' and let us see how it looks, five hundred years from now. America went to Libya and looted all its Gold, under the pretext of "Human right", just as the British say they would not return the Benin Bronze because "they are helping usto keep it". You cant have all these white, rampaging looters running riot on your territory, and still expect to have your heritages intact.. Thank you for your post. Lastpage! 4 Likes |

mrsteel: Sir, it is NOT misleading at all. I have a Storey building as testament to that theory. All internal and external partitions are 6" blocks (UPSTAIRS), only the ground floor external partitions are 9" blocks and the building is over 5yrs now, not a single crack or anything to worry about. And l have friends who went the same route, with same result. I guess what Egun-Chariman did not explain into details is that it all depends on the Engineering drawing as to where Pillars are required, sticking to QUALITY of those Pillars, not being miserly on Cement usage and to a lesser extent, using Quality Blocks. In my own build, not a single Pillar had sharp sand or salty water! It was a very rich mix of Granite, Iron, enough Cement and Stonedust all through, completely CHAINED to all Lintels and Colums. It was people like Electricians, Door fixers and Plumbers that suffered and paid the price for it's strength because all concrete parts were like Steel, just too hard to chisel or break. Many Power Drills had their Drillbits destroyed and l had to buy a few replacements as some Contractors were threaning to abandon work because of extra cost being incurred on that account. My point, from a practical point of experience is that Block-side is not the MAJOR determininf factor for safety/strength in a building, for the reason Egunmogaji mentiond: They are NOT the MAJOR load-bearing element in a storey building. Really, let us sit-back and reflect: What part of the weight of a "decking" can all those useless 9" Blocks that you can crush with bare hands carry? Think about it for a second..... and you will realise that it is the Pilalrs and Columns that are doing the job and that is where the money needs to be spent. My humble opinion, Sir. michlins: My good friend, l am happy that you are also learning from experience! Ask him if you can share some pictures that do not compromise his "safety and security" and abide by his decision. I observed that you mellowed down after the initial "gragra" otherwise, you would have lost this job! If not for that decision, not even how good your work is, would have got you the job or even other jobs here! The lesson l take from it is that: Your QUALITY might show you the door, at times it is your ATTITUDE that takes you to the next ALTITUDE! Be HUMBLE. Now, the time has come to prove wrong, those who thought your job is "Cheaper by almost 50%", because it does not have the Quality! Show them that your business model is based on TurnOver, not EXCESSIVE in-between PROFIT. And l hope other people who are into service and contracting, can learn from you. Wish you success and more business. 9 Likes |
