FarahAideed: So if the tarrif works and actuly saves you diesel, why would you complain about it. Most people commenting here have generator, even if it is as small as I pass my neighbour. The cost per kwh of electricity from my gen is about N160 per kwh and it still might not carry everything. If i substitute that for public power at N60 I am still saving money. |

COMPAQ: Well I criticised the new Tarriff Because I didn't trust that PHCHN will live up to their words of better power supply and there will be no way to call them to order ..I am on band A Tarriff and so far the light has improved and I can see the savings already because I my house runs gen when ever the Electricity goes off and we are home .... I the DISCOS keep to their word then there is no need to revert the tarriffs |

The problem is whether they will keep the tempo or even improve on giving us 24/7 light like other African country. And with estimated billing to continue, likely they will revert back to old days with you paying three times the bill. FarahAideed: |

SmartPolician: That's my biggest fear. Something tells me they'll still "remove subsidy" from petrol and the price will go up again. Let them just remove all they want to remove once and let's get used to it... It's just like doing a surgery in batches for the exact problem, just do it once abeg... E go pain, yes, but atleast the pain will be just that once 1 Like |

In all honesty and based on 20years experience as an Accountant and Economist, deregulation is a bitter pill we have to swallow. A lot of people will say this is not the time due to the pandemic, but truth is that there is no good time as Nigeria is a poverty stricken nation and this will not change anytime soon. In fact it was better if we had deregulated 10 years ago, because with devaluation from $/165 to $/200 to $/360 and now to $/450, Nigerians have got poorer over time. Most major purchases in any household such as vehicle, fridge, freezer, computer, TV etc are imported and therefore e-rate dependent. Nigeria's revenue is dwindling like crazy. Our only source of any meaningful forex - crude oil- is becoming less valuable as solar and wind energy become viable alternatives to hydro, coal and gas fired plants. The final death of crude may come when electric cars become the norm globally, as 50% of crude oil is used by the transportation sector. This is death of petrol cars is expected to occur between 2030 -2040. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2020/09/23/california-banning-sales-of-new-gasoline-cars-in-the-state-by-2035/#1066bfa77b87 Yet Nigeria is a nation of young people. About 60% of our 200m population are between 0 -25, so you can imagine how many cars will be on the roads in 10-15 years when these people start working. Will we subsides petrol for another 10mln incremental cars on our roads in 2030 with our limited funds, when we have no money for education for these people? Lack of education means they will likely remain in poverty. Poverty increases the chance of excessive childbirth and the destructive cycle goes on and on. That said, deregulation is not the only thing that will break the cycle. There is a lot for the government to do, but government can do NOTHING if it has no money to do it with. The NLC should make itself more relevant in issues at the Presidency and NASS level that affect the people such as wastage of funds, corruption in high places etc. NLC had nothing to say about NDDC saga? NLC has had nothing to say about wasting money for Hadjj? NLC had nothing to say about NASS spending billions every 4 years on cars? NLC has nothing to say on NASS budgeting N39bln to refurbish what is already one of the best buildings in Nigeria? That is where NLC can make itself useful and impact Nigerian if it really has Nigerian's at heart. |

Re: Labour Accepts Deregulation As Government Halts Hike In Electricity Tariffs by COMPAQ(m): 10:19am On Sep 28, 2020 |
FarahAideed: Well that remains to be seen. Your fears are somewhat justified, but then again this tariff structure incentivizes the DISCOS to give you more power so that they can get more money from you. Hopefully that motivates them to increase public power supply. My estate gen bill has actually been reducing from N35k last year to as low as N20k now due to improved power. If power improves still it can reduce further to say N10k. 1 Like |

The FG has technically outsmarted Labour by increasing two major commodities, and the gullible labour has finally settled for one. |

Theoarhics:Your peers (private sector) increased the price of the so called commodities, & you are blaming the Federal Government? Does the Federal Government control the downstream sector of oil, does the Federal Government own the Distribution or Energy Generation Companies? |
Re: Labour Accepts Deregulation As Government Halts Hike In Electricity Tariffs by Agbegbaorogboye: 8:36pm On Sep 28, 2020 |
SilverNorGold: I suggest you check very well the meaning of patriot. Patriotism is about loyalty to the country not the president. In so far as you choose to worship the president, you can be called his loyalist or admirer but that does not equate you to being a patriot. Wole Soyinka and Obasanjo for example just called this govt the most divisive in the nation's history. Does that make them enemies of the country? I'm sure even Buhari can't lay claim to being more of a patriot than these two gentlemen. So, I suggest you consider very carefully what exactly you profess and swear fidelity to. There's no shame in being a political follower of an individual or a paid propagandist for that matter. It can be likened to a job like any other. But there's great evil and deceit in equating a personal preference to love for country. |
Re: Labour Accepts Deregulation As Government Halts Hike In Electricity Tariffs by Nobody: 8:58pm On Sep 28, 2020 |
Agbegbaorogboye: No, I am not loyal only to the President. I am also loyal, and even more, to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have said it times without number that President Buhari isn't perfect. Meaning he can be criticized, and I do criticize him and his government when he errs. However, always condemning and insulting the president even when he does the right thing is not patriotism. You mentioned Soyinka. Soyinka doesn't only always criticize the president like you guys do. That's my point. If you wanna criticize, do so when necessary. Not criticizing everything, even the good ones, simply because you don't like his religion or tribe. That's what I am against. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 3 Likes |

SilverNorGold:Good. Even though your signature says otherwise, let's accept your explanation. To the fuel and electricity hike which is the reason for the topic. Has Buhari done right by Nigerians in the matter of fuel and electricity tariff hike? Has he shown fidelity to the country as a true stateman? Is he worthy of praise/adulation or worthy of vilification for deceiving the populace? I'll like your honest assessment. |
Re: Labour Accepts Deregulation As Government Halts Hike In Electricity Tariffs by Nobody: 12:12am On Sep 29, 2020 |
Agbegbaorogboye: At the emboldened, you have already condemned him, there's no point. Anyway, read the article, the answer to your first question is there. I would also advise you read on deregulation. It'll help you better understand the article. Buhari is not increasing the price because he wants to. That's the misconception. Regarding being a true statesman, even some bigwigs in the opposition party will tell you yes. But the problem is that you have already written him off. Nothing I will say will change anything, unless you start to see things critically and objectively. God bless you. God bless Nigeria. 3 Likes |
Re: Labour Accepts Deregulation As Government Halts Hike In Electricity Tariffs by Agbegbaorogboye: 12:28am On Sep 29, 2020 |
SilverNorGold:You get my point now? You can't bring yourself to criticise him. Simple as that. A brief history. Buhari said fuel subsidy is fraud. He said he doesn't understand fuel subsidy. From 2011 to 2015, he refused to attend the Council of State meeting where he could have been better enlightened on the subject. He kept on inciting the populace against the government of the day while collecting his dues as a former head of state without carrying out the responsibilities therein. 2020, he does the exact same thing he stood against in 2012 and claimed was a fraud. Question is, whose time has been wasted in those eight years? His or the country's? If subsidy removal is a panacea to our downstream issues, do you know where we'll be by now if it had been carried out then? Fact is, he ended up sabotaging the country for his selfish interest. At the end, Nigerians and Nigeria are the greatest loser. Hope you'll find the clarity to recognise a fraud when you see one. |

Agbegbaorogboye: Actually, Buhari was right. What Buhari was alluding to was the lack of transparency, fraud, etc. The amount stolen almost rivaled the subsidy itself that the removal would have been better. Though I admit he exaggerated a bit, that's Politics. He's a politician. Politicians use hyperbole as a tool, it's necessary in politics. According to findings by Reuters, Buhari was proven right.
Inciting the people? That he protested the fraud doesn't mean he incited anyone. See how Buhari is being systematic in the removal, several relevant bills in place. Compared to PDP's abrupt approach. 3 Likes |
