So Explain 28 bags for two pillars and sliding From Saydfact "CEMENT - SAND - STONE relationship; In practice a 50kg of cement bag contains 2 head pan of cement; this means that if i have a plan to mix 1 bag of cement my mixing ratio would be: 1:2:4 = 1 bag of cement : 4 head-pans of sand : 8 head-pans of stone 1:3:6 = 1 bag of cement : 6 head-pans of sand : 12 head-pans of stone" https://www.nairaland.com/3630752/cement-sand-granite-concrete-mix |

It's better you direct this question to the professional trained in that wise, the quantity surveyor. If you seek an answer, please attach your architectural drawings especially floor plans and elevations. I'll give you the quantities. Footstradamus: 1 Like |

Hello, I live in an estate and my septic tank fills quickly compared to that of my neighbors. I have called a plumber to empty it to the bottom numerous times but notice water seeping in from beneath. I would love if someone that have had this experience or is knowledgeable in the field share the remedy to this please. Thanks. |

n3xt: From experience bro, any concrete grade C30 will required one to carried out a mix design to arrived at mix proportioning. In a simple man language, one will need to control the aggregate size, water to cement ratio and possible use a pozzolan such as water retardants, superplasticizers etc. 1 Like |

Unibenfucker:this is a swamp and not a land at all. Is it safe to build a house on such swamp? Even if you sand fill the swamp, what about the water beneath the soil? Think again about it to avoid sinking house in the future. 5 Likes |

edoman2016: Lol. Most of the lands in lekki are sand filled . We have so many houses there close to me . That's the area the client has chosen. The water would be bailed out and then left to settle naturally and compacted before construction stars |

n3xt: The question GoodFaith is supposed to ask is the reason for using this mix rather than the regular known mix generally used by workmen I once did a job with this mix for a culvert running 2 sides of a 3 plot of land though the client insisted I use it for his job and he was always around to monitor it. The boys who did the casting job were very happy at the end of the project. 2 Likes |

edoman2016:That is not a problem.. Eko Atlantic is built on the sea .. the client knows what he bought and he is ready to face the job needed to get stable ground for foundation... (pile or raft foundation). He is also to engage a good Geotechnical engineer and structural engineer to solve the stability of the building.. But a rule of thumb... if your account is not fat enough.. avoid this kind of land..... Thanks Engr.. A. L Onakomaya MNSE Rcoren 3 Likes |

n3xt: As a colleague of structural Engineer.. I wonder why you spent so much material on a residential gate. You must have your reason... the reason is what we all want to hear.. Even industrial gate sliding gate I designed 10meter width and 4.5 meters high only gupped 20bags of Cement.. 1:2:4. Also from the pics, you use gravel instead of normal granite. why use gravel when you want to attain rich concrete mix... But for residential house of yours, are heavy duty cars or machines the reason you used 500mm depth of beam.. please sheild more light to this... Before bricklayers start quotting 28bags to install gate now on nairaland ... smile 7 Likes |

GoodFaith: And also on what the owner wants. While Nigeria has no history of earthquakes, I lived in earthquake country for over 3 decades. This shapes my thinking. My way is not the only way and it’s not a bible that must be followed. |

Raheemzee:.. My proffessional point of view is that the soak away pit is doing it job... but the septic tank isn't... Septic tank should be well plastered and dress to avoid sorounding water seeping into it.. You should have take notice of the water table in your site when doing foundation... this will guide you when doing septic tank ... so when the engineer designs, he could advice reinforce concrete, or normal concrete or solid filling the block holes.. SOLUTION Best advice is for you to wait till dry season when the water table is down... aand let a bricklayer help see how he can reduce water seepage by replastering or pure cement controlling or water proof adhesive sealant... all depend on the condition he meet... Rule of tomb... always consider the water table in your site during wet season to adequately cater for design of septic tank... Engr.. A. L Onakomaya.. MNSe MCoren 1 Like |

n3xt: This is the way things ought to be done but we like shortcuts in Nigeria. I did my gate like this. It stops pillars from caving in sometimes and I intend to drive heavy equipments into my compound. One way, not the only way. Not a bibeli. 1 Like |

micgray100: Maybe tomorrow, heavy duty trucks might start coming into my compound. Before then, let me do everything I can do now that I’m still able to. But I live very close to an area where limestone is blasted almost twice a week and I felt I should do everything and anything to make my project maintenance free. Some years ago, I heard a rumour that Calabar - Lagos railroad will pass through my area. I don’t want to wait till that time to do the right thing. So if I may ask my honourable colleague of structural engineer, is there any problem with using that amount of concrete for gate pillars and beam? I saw this type of beam (picture below) and I knew that’s definitely not what I wanted. ____ By the way we didn’t use gravel for the mix sir. 1 Like

Raheemzee: What is the nature of the land? Normal or swamp? In what state and location is the land? What is the age of the soakaway and how big? How was the soakaway built? In-situ cast and sunk in system or normal block method? If you have a picture, post. This information is needed to have a good perspective of what is going on. 1 Like 1 Share |
