The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), says it makes no sense for Nigeria to sell petroleum products at prices lower than those sold in neighbouring countries.

He made this known on Thursday morning while delivering a speech on the occasion of Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary at Aso Villa, Abuja.

Buhari said, “Petroleum prices in Nigeria are to be adjusted. We sell now at N161 per litre. A comparison with our neighbours will illustrate the point.

“Chad, which is an oil-producing country, charges N362 per litre. Niger, also an oil-producing country, sells oil at N346 per litre. Ghana, another oil-producing country, petroleum pump price is N326 per litre. Further afield, Egypt charges N211 per litre. Saudi Arabia charges N168 per litre.

“It makes no sense for oil to be cheaper in Nigeria than in Saudi Arabia.”

It also makes no sense for Nigerians to be living in squalor as compared to Saudi Arabia.

It makes no sense for Nigerians to be harassed daily by security agencies while Saudi people live like kings.

This government is quick to increase the suffering of their people while reducing freedom and benefits of being Nigerians.

I was also stunned by the comment. Trying to draw comparison wasn't bad as Saudi is miles ahead of Nigeria in its oil industry but saying "it makes no sense" was a bit off for me.

I know in my rational mind that oil subsidy removal should have been done long ago but the situation of Nigerians is so bad that such a good policy seems so bad and ill-timed right now.

The disposable income of an average Saudi middle class citizen is as high as a typical riich person in Nigeria. Increase the disposable income here, put more money in the pockets of ordinary Nigerians then try asking them to pay the same amount for similar services elsewhere. First thing, first..

Those countries build their grid over a long period of time, they don't do ipob logic that praises looting and defends the shameless privitization of NEPA to the abhorrent reprehensible discos, whose agreement see Nigeria paying private companies bailout for not selling power at the price they choose.
