Chapter 1
It was the month of june and that time of the year when it was rainy in many parts of Nigeria, but that particular day was sunny.
Kemi's eyes were peered out the window from the comfort of her small one room apartment, she could feel the heat from the sun.
She drew her curtain close and instantly regretted that action.
She was hit with more intense heat and grumbled to herself. There was no win for her either way.
Her stomach rumbled and she ignored the noise.
These days she had little appetite for food and she only ate because it was a daily necessity except she wanted to develop ulcer which wasn't a part of her plan.
She had enough issues already as it is and they were all exhausting her.
She had just gotten a rejection from one of the jobs she applied for, her luck has been pretty disappointing and the job sector in Nigeria wasn't one to write home about.
Kemi studied in one of the top prestigious university in Nigeria.
Everyone had told her it wouldn't be hard to get a job considering she graduated with a second class upper, but it's been two years now and she was still without a job.
She was a firm believer of the phrase "darkness comes before dawn" but with each dawn of a new day, she lost belief in that little by little.
She lived in the downtown part of Lagos that was bristling with opportunities that seemed to evade her.
Kemi wasn't one to keep lots of friends so she had few people she could call and vent to, but she was learning to be more social these days because the loneliness was starting to get to her.
She made friends with sandra, the sales girl in the shop down the street.
Sandra was a high spirited, laquacious jolly soul that always had something to say each time they met. Kemi was thinking of paying her a visit today to distract herself from her thoughts.
She made her way to the door before she could change her mind.
The walk down the street seemed longer than usual, many thoughts ran through her mind, what would she do now, what would she have for dinner, since she couldn't ignore the rumbling sound that came from her stomach any longer. She was starting to run out of money and she had just paid her NEPA bill after the landlord threatened to disconnect her power if she tarried any longer.
The thought of the heat she was going to have to deal with prompted her to pay him swiftly with the little money left with her.
Her new friend Sandra met her with a cheerful demeanour as usual.
She always appeared like a child with little to worry about.
Kemi was just getting to know her, but she could deduce behind the cheerful demeanour, there was a girl that craved for more out of life.
Her boss only came around once or twice a week so Kemi never had to worry about running into him. He trusted Sandra with the day to day running of his shop, she had proven to be a trustworthy employee in the last one year.
"Why the long face?" Sandra was inquisitive as always.
Kemi contemplated narrating her ordeal to her, but she doubted Sandra would understand.
"I'm fine, stepped into a puddle on the way here, you know how terrible the road is when it rains, by the way you seem extra cheerful today what's new?" Kemi evaded her question tactfully
"My dear, it's nothing new oh, it's end of the month I'm expecting pay today or tomorrow... that's enough to be joyous about you know"
Kemi felt a pang in her chest. This could have been her, if she had a job.
She thought of her parents and how they've been expecting her to share the good news of getting a job in the last two years, but life had other plans.
Sandra sensed a change in her countenance and tried to pry an answer out of her.
"What's wrong? You suddenly went numb"
"Sorry... I just got carried away" Kemi answered
"Feel free to talk to me, I barely know anything about you and I think as friends I should know more about you than just your name. Except of course you don't view me as your friend" Sandra said without hesitation
"Of course you're my friend, I come to see you and we talk for hours... that's what friends do" Kemi said
"Point of correction. I do most of the talking" Sandra replied bluntly.
Kemi couldn't refute that, she knew Sandra was right, her smartness was one of the reasons she made friends with her in the first place.
"Are you going to let me know more about you than just the surface?" Sandra added curiously.
A young boy saved her from having to answer that query immediately, his presence in the shop distracted Sandra from her for some minutes.
Kemi quickly thought of a possible reply for her, a straight forward reply that would save her from Sandra's further enquiry.
Sandra attended to the young boy swiftly and quickly diverted her attention back to her.
She hoped Sandra would change the topic to something different, but that was a long shot.
"Look Sandra, I'm a private person and I don't appreciate others poking their noses in my affairs" That was the sharp reply that came to her head, but Kemi quickly dismissed the thought and rather settled for what was less piercing "You wouldn't understand, even if I explained to you" Kemi answered melancholically
"Would you like something to drink? Then maybe we can talk"
"That would be nice, thank you" Kemi replied
Sandra offered her a chilled drink with sausage roll. Kemi was giddy with happiness because her dinner for that night was set and she was highly appreciative.
Thank God she came with her small shoulder bag. She would quickly keep the sausage roll in her bag when Sandra isn't looking so she wouldn't convince her to eat it on the spot. Thankfully it was a plastic coke so she would drink half and keep the remaining half for dinner.
"Can we talk now?" Sandra asked
"Sure, ask away" Kemi sipped her drink happily, savouring the taste and being careful not to take long sips. She reminded herself with each sip she had dinner to save for. The rumbling in her stomach was salvaged thanks to Sandra.

Chapter 2
Kemi usually enjoyed the leisure night, but tonight things were different. She reached into her bag for her almost worn-out headset, scrolled through her playlist and settled for Sia.
Her strong, powerful voice just seems to resonate with her mood.
She hummed the tune to herself, nodding her head and ignored the stares of people as she walked by. She was home within minutes and resorted to having her remaining coke and sausage roll for dinner.
The sausage roll tasted sweeter than usual in her mouth and she silently thanked Sandra for her kindness.
She recollected the events of that evening and how Sandra had tried to get be less laconic with their conversations.
"That bridge can't be crossed in a day, but I'll be more open onwards, meanwhile I have to take my leave now, I still have some chores to do at home" Kemi had told her
"And here I was thinking we were starting to make progress" Sandra shaked her head in disbelief
"I'm sorry, we'll continue this conversation tomorrow" Kemi tried to placate her. She reached for a hug that was rejected.
"Don't patronise me" She mused
Kemi had left shortly after.
She thought of the disappointing look on Sandra's face. She's nice and friendly and seemed genuinely interested in being her friend, but Kemi still had some reservations.
She pondered a little bit more till she drifted asleep.
Waking up in a sour mood was starting to become a daily routine for Kemi.
She always wished she was getting up for work.
"Be more optimistic" her mom had told her on her last visit home "you can move back in with us if you're struggling" Kemi had rebuffed that idea, but her rent was due in a few months and she had no source of income to renew her rent for another year.
She was starting to consider moving back in with her parents,
She had moved to Lagos for better chances of acquiring a job which has proven difficult for her.
She grudgingly got out of bed and decided on a walk outside her compound for a breath of fresh air. She could feel her legs resisting the task, but she wasn't about to succumb to its demand.
She made her way outside and almost tripped on an empty bottle on the floor, she mumbled to herself and kicked the bottle aside.
"Why did you do that?!! are you by any chance myopic?"
Kemi heard someone yell out,she turned towards the voice and it was her neighbour looking furious.
She was referred to as "Oreke" by most people which means "Beautiful and graceful" but her attitude was far from graceful.
"Good morning to you too and that's not only offensive, but also incorrect, I think the word you're looking for hyperopic" Kemi said calmly.
She was in no mood for the early morning exchange of words
"What does that have to do with anything?" Oreke asked
"Are you usually this slow in the morning?" Kemi retorted
Oreke's face went from furious to disgruntled
"Why....! you..." Oreke stammered angrily
Kemi wasn't having none of her antics and she wasted no time walking away from Oreke.
Behind her she could hear her mutter incoherently, words Kemi couldn't decipher.
"What a character" Kemi thought to herself.
The feel of the early morning breeze on her skin was a slight relief for her already sour mood.
She reflected on her early years in the university, she has set so many targets for herself.
Her plan was to graduate, finish her youth service and work in a communications company as a presenter, radio or television, she didn't mind either. Most of her schoolmates were gainfully employed or had one or two things going for them.
She was always asked the resented question by her mates "got a job now?" She got tired of saying no each time and explaining to them how she toils round for job interviews that either end up being a scam or they give her the usual "we'll get back to you" response and they never get back to her.
Kemi would anticipate and refresh her emails tons of times, eager for a positive response that she never gets.
Thinking of it was starting to make her head spin. Those disappointing moments when she eventually stops waiting for that email to come through, bringing herself to come to terms with the fact that what she had anticipated severely wasn't going to be.
Those memories made her gloomy, she decided on a quick shower to soothe her spinning head.
She was going to have to come up with a solution for her plight soon.
She caught a wisp of soap bubbles and blew like a child. She smiled to herself, remembering a few of her childhood memories, those were fun times , growing up with no care in the world, now she was a grumpy adult. She frowned at that realization, it was time for an actual chance in her life.
The water was colder than usual, making her shower quicker.
She ran to her room quickly, eager for warmth.
She picked up her phone and saw she had missed some calls. It was her friend Tolani, from the same collegiate background as her. She had no airtime no call her back, while pondering on what to do next, her phone rang again and she picked it up quickly.
"Hello, runaway friend. You finally picked up, I was starting to worry about you" Tolani said at the other end of the line
"Na you sabi oooh... I dey. It's been a while yeah, haven't seen you in a long while, we should change that. What do you think?" Kemi responded
"Yeah yeah, it's going to happen sooner than you think, where are you at the moment?" Tolani asked
"Home, anything?" Kemi inquired
"I just need you to get dressed and come to the address I'll text to you now. You surely won't regret it" Tolani sounded ecstatic
"What's going on? Full details please" If she was going to spend the little amount she had left on transportation, then it be worthwhile.
"Tolani, I'm waiting" Kemi said when she got no answer
"Sorry, got distracted. Ok I have a job for you, you'll be interviewed, so I need you to come down here as soon as possible" Tolani said
Kemi was thrilled at the prospect of a possible job, but she has gotten her hopes dashed countless times, so this time around she didn't want to jinx it by having too much expectations. She was going to be neutral about the whole thing.
"What are you waiting for? Address please!" Kemi screamed out, she was surprised at her own voice.
"I just sent you a text, check and get back to me and do hurry"
Kemi was already on her way to bathroom when she remembered she already had a shower, punctuality was second nature to her. In a few minutes she was ready to leave.
Shortly after she left home, she realized in her haste she had forgotten to switch off the socket in her room. "The power holding company rarely bring light anyway" she thought to herself, nonetheless what if she had left her iron on, or her electric cooker.
She tried not to focus on those negative thoughts and instead diverted her thoughts to impressing the interviewer and landing herself the job.

Chapter 3
The second half of the journey was one she had prayed wouldn't happen. The traffic was moving rather too slowly and time was definitely not on her side. She would have alighted and began trekking but she had no idea where she was going, she wasn't familiar with the vicinity. Tolani had not given her a time frame, all she said was "get here soon" She thought of alighting from the bus and asking people for directions, but she was afraid of being directed wrongly and missing her opportunity.
Less than an hour she was gloomy and non optimistic, but that changed in few minutes, like the universe had harkened to her request for a change in her life.
She relished and embraced the optimism life was throwing at her, she was going to have to face her fears and alight from the stuffy bus, she was starting to sweat due to the traffic anyway and being untidy was something she dreaded.
She alighted and started her journey by foot. The best people to ask for directions are those selling by the road side, most passer-bys were most times oblivious and sometimes direct wrongly.
She made a call to Tolani whose number was busy, she sent a text message explaining her plight , but the message hadn't delivered. Apparently she had less than four naira on her line so she couldn't send a text. She glanced around quickly, trying to find a place to recharge and she found none.
A bread seller directed her to a small shed and she hurriedly went there. Time was definitely moving fast and the traffic was starting to clear, now she was starting to wish she had not gotten down from the bus. She gritted her teeth and hastened the shed owner up
"Sorry aunty, I dey find am" He pleaded
"I don dey late abeg, if you no get make I dey go" She answered impatiently , she had no time no waste.
"I don see am aunty, no vex" He handed the card to her and she recharged her line quickly.
While texting Tolani she stepped on something and fell flat on her face. She looked back to see the hurdle and it was a car tyre. "who puts a car tyre in the middle of the road?!" She screeched.
"It's not in the middle of the road, it's on the side of the road and if you had watched where you were going rather than being on your phone, you would have noticed it" A man responded from his car.
Kemi couldn't think of a comeback
She considered explaining to him the urgency of the text, but quickly changed her mind.
She figured he either wouldn't believe her or wouldn't care to listen.
She got up, brushed the dust off her clothes and dabbed her face with a handkerchief. She noticed the traffic had cleared and she wished she had been a little more patient.
Telling herself there was no point crying over spilled milk, she beckoned on a bike and gave him the address to make her journey faster.
"Na seven hundred naira ma" the motorcyclist said, smiling
"For what? I dey comot Lagos ni?" Kemi was confused, he must have noticed her impatience, hence using the opportunity to charge higher.
"The place far, we go pass many corners" He responded with the usual lie motorcyclists were known for
"Na so" She hissed and angrily walked away, he called out to her,but she ignored him.
She got on another bus and got to her destination soon afterwards.
She called tolani to let her know she was at the said address, but her number was not available.
"Who you dey find?" The security man at the gate queried her
"Good morning, here to see Tolani please" Kemi answered
"Who is that?" He looked confused
Kemi showed him the address Tolani had sent her.
"Na the address be this...but you sure say na here? Cause I no know any Tolani wey dey work for here" He said with a mouthful of bitter kola "you fit call am outside, make the person come pick you for here because I no fit allow you inside without company approval..you sabi how the thing dey go" He added, trying to be empathetic to her situation.
"Could you please help me go in and ask of anyone named Tolani" Kemi pleaded "She might be using a different name here, but I know her as Tolani" She quickly added
"We're not allowed to leave our duty post ma" The security man said abruptly
"I know it's a lot to ask, but please I'm out of options here, her number is not going through" Kemi tried to convince him
"Eeeeya, but there's nothing I can do, you would have to wait till someone comes outside" He offered her a seat and she sat slowly, unsure of what to do as Tolani's number was now switched off.
Kemi opened her mouth to plead with him again to let her go on, but he had a stern look that discouraged her instantly.
After sitting for thirty minutes with no solution in sight, she walked up to him, not minding his poker face and once again recounted everything to him, explaining in details how this was very important to her.
"I've told you there's nothing I can do, my job is important to me, same way your friend is important to you. If I lose this job I won't be able to feed my family. We would have to starve and would you like that ma?"
Kemi understood the rhetorical question and everything he stands to lose due to negligence. She wouldn't want that sort of misfortune happening to him so she didn't press on further and quietly sat down. She would have to be patient.

Chapter 4
"Patience is a virtue" Kemi constantly reminded herself while she sat down waiting.
She urgently needed to use the loo.
She turned her gaze to the security man and saw him dozing off. Dang, she would really hate to wake him up. She had little choice at this point. Her bladder needed some release.
She studied him for a few moments, detesting being an intruder.
As luck would have it he jerked awake like someone being chased.
"Yes, what is it?" He snapped
"I wan piss" Kemi said
"So you sabi speak pidgin, you con dey blow grammar since" He gave her a wry look and directed her somewhere.
She thanked him and bolted away
"You sure say you no go come back tomorrow like this?" He asked her when she returned
"No, I've come this far, I can't afford to leave" Kemi was unyielding, she was determined to see this through. She wouldn't miss this opportunity for anything
"Anyone you like, if you want pure water I have" He offered
"Thank you, but no" She politely declined
"Ok, you don call the number again?"
"Yes, still the same reply" Kemi explained
"That one hard oh" He looked away , shaking his head. Kemi redialed the number again for the hundredth time, it was busy. At least the phone was finally back on, that's a good news. She turned to inform the security man of the improvement and saw him dozing off again.
She wondered how he could snooze and unsnooze so effortlessly. He must have had a lot of practice. Kemi smiled and continued to dial Tolani.
A young man came through the gate, tapping the security man awake
"Na your wife be this? What's she doing here?" He pointed at Kemi
"Oga she dey find person" He answered
"Who is that?" He gave Kemi a scrutinizing look
"She say na one Ms Tolani" the security man told him
"Has she called the person?" He asked the security man
"I'm right here so you can direct the questions to me, I'm here for an interview and I was given this address and yes I've called her countless times, but it's been unreachable"
"Right, there's truly an interview here" the young man nodded in agreement "who is your referral?" He added
"Tolani. . but like I told the security, she might be using a different name here" Kemi said to him
"Oh, I don't know anyone by that name, wait here let me go in and ask, I'll be back soon" He promised.
Soon must mean something different, Kemi thought, because an hour had passed slowly and he still hadn't returned.
What a day, she sighed.
She was starting to get hungry, but she couldn't afford to buy anything, she remembered the pure water the security man had offered her earlier and requested it from him. He gave it to her with a smile and she thanked him wholeheartedly.
The young man soon returned, regretting to inform her he had forgotten to ask about Tolani
"It skipped my mind, got so busy when I got in"
"Ok, could you kindly go back in and ask ?" Kemi suggested to him
"No, I can't. I have to run an errand urgently. I don't mind dropping you off somewhere though" He beckoned on her to follow him
"Umm, no I'll wait here... thank you, you said it yourself there's an interview going on , so I wouldn't want to lose my opportunity" Kemi said quietly
"Your choice then, I'll be back soon, so if you're still here I'll try not to forget your request this time" He smiled
"That'll be appreciated" she tried to force a smile, but failed. The last time he had said he'd be back soon had turned out to be the opposite of soon.
He nodded at the security man and left.
Kemi was tired of sitting down, she was starting to feel fatigued and she needed to be sharp for the interview.
"I want to briefly take a stroll" She told the security man
"Ok" He said without looking up, he was focused on the groundnuts he was peeling.
"Wait you know anywhere for here?" He quickly asked
"No, I'm not going far...just need to stretch my legs"
He dismissed her and went back to peeling his groundnuts
She walked down the road, looking at the buildings, she might as well familiarize herself a little with vicinity, just incase it all works out for her. She greeted a few people on the way and skimmed through her phone a number of times to check for text message.
When she was satisfied with her walk, she turned around and headed back to the company.
"You no quick come back" He told her.
"Person find me come?" Kemi's heart skipped a
bit
"No, nobody" The security man answered "I don chop my groundnut finish"
"Chai, I was almost scared" She composed herself and reached for a chair
"No vex" He said "person enter the company sha, but I no mention you to am oh...if you dey here you for explain better... You understand"
Kemi's heart sank in her chest, she wasn't gone for more than fifteen minutes and this had happened.
She heard the security man trying to placate her, but her attention was somewhere else already. A sight that brightened up her face.

Chapter 5
A group of people were coming out of the building and Tolani was one of them. To say she was ecstatic is an understatement, she was overjoyed. She stood up happily and ran towards them
"Tolani!!" She called out with excitement
"Ah, Kemi why are you just coming?" Tolani asked looking pissed
"No, I can explain, I came across some hurdles on the way... It all started with traffic and I tried calling you and it wasn't connecting-"
"What do you mean? these people with me came from the same route as you so why didn't they complain about traffic?" Tolani interrupted her
"You don't seem to q understand, I got here eventually and the security man wouldn't let me in" Kemi explained
"Yes, he was given the instruction not to allow anyone in past 9am, you were obviously late and that's why you weren't allowed in" Tolani hissed
"You know I'm very punctual and would never be late for no reason" Kemi tried to make her see reason
"Do I? Maybe you're not the Kemi I used to know. The Kemi I know would be the first to get here, she wouldn't be coming up with such excuses" Tolani was non empathetic to Kemi's surprise, she wondered why Tolani was acting that way towards her.
Kemi tried explaining a few more times, but was cut short by Tolani
"You didn't even give me a time frame, the whole thing was impromptu and I came here as soon as you called me, the security man also said he didn't know anyone called Tolani. I don't get why you're sounding this way" Kemi was indignant
"I'm known by my middle name here. I've mentioned that to you" Tolani shrugged
"No, you haven't...I'm not forgetful so I'd definitely remember" Kemi said to her
"Oh, but this just proves you're forgetful because I'm pretty certain I've mentioned it"
The other people around were having a swell time watching the exchange of words between them.
"I'm not here to argue Tolani, can we move on and talk about the job?" Kemi was tired already
"So I'm the one that's here to argue? clearly that's what you're insinuating"
"You know what it's fine, thanks for nothing" Kemi concluded
"You're welcome, next time when you're asked to show up somewhere, show up on time or no one would take you seriously. I expected more from you because I understand your frustration of being jobless, who else should jump at this opportunity if not you? Seeing as you've toiled for years with nothing to show for it"
Kemi was taken aback and walked away from the little crowd that was starting to form.
"Ma............" The security man called out from behind her, but she didn't turn around and walked as fast as she could, away from the scene. All she felt dejection as she hastened her steps, her head bowed in defeat

Chapter 6
Kemi walked without stopping, eager to get away from what became another disappointment to her. The awful feeling never hurt less each time.
She got on the first bus she came across and thought of nothing. She was angry at the waste of transportation. It had all been for nothing.
As much as she tried to divert her thoughts from what had happened, she couldn't help but ponder on it.
Lost in thought, she didn't notice the bus had gone past her bus stop until it was almost too late. She screamed out to the driver to stop.
"Why you no talk since? I no fit park for here"
He said angrily, in the manner that was common with many bus drivers
Kemi knew she would have to walk all the way back and didn't wish for the bus to move further away
"Abeg stop na!" she pleaded frantically
He stopped too abruptly and she lost her balance and landed on a small almajiri girl begging for alms by the roadside.
"Oh my God! are you alright?" She panicked
The bus driver sped off, leaving her to handle it on her own.
The almajiri girl winced in pain, Kemi couldn't decipher what she was saying in Hausa , but she could imagine it wasn't anything pleasant
"I'm sorry, are you injured or in pain?"
Kemi inspected her fully to make sure hadn't inflicted any injury on her.
Fully satisfied with her inspection, she dusted the dirt off the almajiri girl and helped her look for the other pair of her slippers which was nowhere in sight. She found the slippers beneath a parked bus and handed it over to her.
"Are you in any kind of pain?" Kemi asked again
The almajiri girl stretched out her hand in response.
"What? Your hand hurts?" Kemi asked while inspecting it
The little girl looked infuriated
"Give me money" she said
"Oh. . . Sorry" Kemi responded ignorantly
She searched her bag for money to give her and she realized she had just hundred naira left with her. Two fifty naira notes, thankfully.
She stretched out her hand to give the girl one of the notes and she looked furious
"Two of them" The girl requested
"You want two of them, I should give you hundred naira?"
The almajiri girl nodded in response and Kemi was shocked. Hundred naira was the last money she had and giving her the whole thing would make her penniless. She wouldn't even be able to afford pure water and she was really thirsty.
"This is all I have and all I can afford to give is half of it. We would split it equally is that fine by you?" Kemi urged
"Hundred naira" The girl insisted. Kemi was having none of that
"By giving you this fifty naira , I'm going to have to trek for the remainder of my journey, so requesting for the whole thing is a bit selfish don't you think? If I had more money I would gladly give you, so let's do this-when next I pass I'd give you another fifty naira" Kemi said as explanatory as she could be.
The girl looked even more pissed and her next action stunned Kemi.

Chapter 7
Like magic it was unreal.
The almajiri girl stormed off, picked up a bowl and walked back towards Kemi.
Kemi noticed the content of the bowl was yellowish in colour and wondered what the girl was doing with it.
The girl moved closer to Kemi and she saw that the pale yellowish liquid in the bowl was pee.
Kemi took a step backward and the almajiri girl charged at her with the bowl of pee.
Kemi ran as fast as her as her legs could carry her and the almajiri girl followed suit.
It was a frantic chase and Kemi fell into a small gutter. She quickly got up and looked back, the girl had stopped chasing after her with the bowl of pee thankfully.
Kemi had little strength to go any further, so she sat on a stool she found, trying to catch her breath. She was a pitiful sight, soaked in a pool of her own sweat and gutter water.
She had misplaced one of the fifty naira notes while running away from the bowl of pee.
She would have to walk halfway before she can get a bus that'll accept fifty naira from her.
When she felt slightly better she started her journey on foot, ignoring the judgy looks of some people she walked past. She quickened her pace when she saw the lightning in the sky.
It might start to rain anytime now.
When she was halfway, she stopped a bus that was going in her direction
"You get change?" The conductor asked
"Na fifty naira I get oh" Kemi told him pronto
"Oya enter" He told her
She boarded the bus and sat on the nearest empty seat, she remembered the almajiri girl and wondered why she ran away from her when she could have just kicked the bowl of pee aside or cautioned her sternly not to pour it. What if the girl had refused and poured it? She made up many scenarios in her head that could have been better than her taking to her heels. The thought of someone or many people's pee on her body repulsed her so she came to a conclusion that running from her was the best thing she could have done in that unexpected moment.
She sighed heavily and stared out the window.
She heard someone clearing throat and noticed a passenger had taken a seat beside her. After a while he held his nose intermittently and Kemi knew she was the reason. She had fallen into a gutter earlier and couldn't wait to get home and get cleaned up. She was too embarrassed to meet his gaze.
"Sister nawa for you oo, only you dey smell soakaway and gutter at the same time"
Kemi uttered no statement to that. She could only imagine how much she was stinking. She was sorry someone beside her had to endure that smell.
The passenger went on and on about the discomfort he was facing.
"Conductor, abeg I wan change seat" He complained
The conductor obliged his request and the driver parked so he could have a change of seat.
Kemi was glad his ordeal was over, he would stop complaining.
To kemi's chagrin, he turned to the person seated beside and narrated what he had to deal with, the whole time he was seated beside Kemi. They chatted like she wasn't there and she heard them laugh and tried not to focus on their conversation.
She felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around . It was the person that's been making a mockery of her, same person that was formerly seated beside her.
"Aunty I dey sell perfume, cheap ones wey you fit afford, if you want" He chuckled
"Why don't you try using it for your breath first" Kemi hissed
There was a few muffled laughter which Kemi ignored. She just couldn't wait to get down, but the evening traffic wasn't easing up.
While she stared out the window, she saw a billboard that read "Stop choosing what isn't choosing you"
She tried to apply that to her situation, remembering how Tolani had called her out of the blue that morning and gave light to her dark tunnel.
Everything had gone downhill, making Kemi ponder if she was choosing something that wasn't choosing her or maybe she was just overthinking things. She chose to go with the latter. It was more logical.
The rain started suddenly with force and she was slightly happy she was still in the bus which provided shelter from the rain.
She watched the rain drops slid down the window and immediately felt shriveled inside of her.
