Sadly, that isn't Ugu. My experience on planting Ugu (after several failures) is that you should never bury the seeds. Instead coat it lightly with soil and just drop it on the ground. Water sparingly and in roughly 2 weeks, you will see the leaves sprout. I have achieved 100 percent success since I learnt this trick. But this is the first time I am reading that the seeds can be split into parts. Quite informative and useful

Nice if you can curtail their excesses. native fowl can be difficult to control. Some hen are not good at bringing up chicks, some roosters will just follow woman and never come back. Some will go and eat food stuffs your neighbour put in the sun to dry. Rainy season don't help with mother hean and chicks.

But in all if u have a spacious compound and good cages. Its really fun keeping native fowls. The loud crows in the morning, watching them pursuing and fucking here and there - i have never seen a livestock as horrrny as roosters. Nawakpi (male goat) dey learn. Additionally,

Its cheaper to maintain as they don't fall sick anyhow and they eat whatever u give and as well fend for themselves if nothing dey.

I will sure breed these if I have my own compound

It may also be that the soil is too hard.

Try till the soil to loosen the ground and plant the seed by making the pointed side face downwards.

Mulch the plant using grasses too.
This will help protect it from excessive heat.

I wonder why researches ar e not being done by our agric institutes as regard this vegetable. Its one of the most widely eaten leafy vegetables in nigeria.

If na abroad, reaserches would have been done to make the seed more rugged and the yield more bounteous

You left out predators, the last time i raised native fowls na birds of prey frustrate me, especially sparrow hawk the bird carry my fowl for my presence...
it was heartbreaking oo.
